Facebook Buys Instagram for $1 Billion

So facebook just purchased instagram for $1 billion. I was wondering since instagram is free and I assume most people who use instagram are also fb users, where is the benefit from purchasing them? I don't see them as huge competitors to fb just because you can use fb from home and on the go. Most people just use instagram on the go. So what was the point of it?

Ads and marketing information. They integrate instagram into the FaceBook API and have the ability to track and consolidate even more information.
Im just waiting for him to get enough info about everyone that he puts his plan for the worlds largest Identity theft ring into action. The more I hear about FB, the more I feel we are on the road to a EVE grade scam to unfold..
