Could it be that hype is real this time?

WhitebeardsWhitebeards Member Posts: 778

I know every time a highly anticipated MMO is about to release people go crazy with excitement but when was the last time this much information in form of videos was avilable for people to see? Anet is not keeping anythign behind closed doors and information about game is freely avilable for people to see. I spent last two weeks watching videos of GW2, seeing is beleving and that is exactly what i did. I must have seen hundreds of videos and cant think of one MMO which lets players get so much informaiton about game mechanics and features before release.

yes people will tell me to 'simmer down' and not get too hyped but what if i say 'maybe hype is for real this time'?

It's the nature of this site.  Hang out here long enough and you see that every major new release plays out exactly the same.

I too state this game is not overhyped.

If you like what you see in all the videos, stay hyped.

I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

I am talking about gameplay videos avilable for anyone to see. Your post would make more sense if i was trying exaggerate stuff about GW2 or trying to make it look like as if it is a second coming. Which i didn't. I am simply talking about genuine information avilable for players to make an informed opinion whether the hype and excitement is real this time.

This question cant be answered, hype is a personal thing, and i personally wont be surprised if the game sucked, i hardly think it'll be the most amazing MMO we've ever seen that lives up to everyones expectations.

Its looking good so far though :) - Cant be dissapointed if you dont get your hopes up ^^

Hype, by definition, is never "real". It's hype. It's marketing fans do for free, and hell, in many cases even pay for privilage to do so.

Game is a game. It's supposed to be entertaining. Some people will love it, some won't. Life will go on either way.

Lots of MMOs have a ton of information before release.

For some I believe the game will validate their lives so much I fear that may prove necessary.

    Nope.

That's not to say that GW2 isn't a good game, it's just not as good as some people are building it up to be.

Is it over hyped? What are it's negatives?

For some folks, yes, this title will be the ultimate fullfillment of their gaming dreams.

    For others, not so much.

I want to believe you, I do, but after AoC, WAR, SWTOR, Aion and Rift, I just can't.

I'm still pre-ordering because I am certain they are actually breaking the mold, but I'm not going to hold my breath for this to be the true next-gen.

It's negatives are all relative and based solely on the personal game mechanics that one favors in their MMO's.

It does some things "different", and different isn't always desireable by everyone.

For for those looking for change, I'm sure it will be a great experience.

Here is what I've been seeing people complain about:

    Zones exist

    No gear progression at endgame

    Not enough skills

    Too difficult

    No dedicated healer

    No tanks

    WvW is a zergfest

    Graphics need to be better

While you are grouped in Dynamic events, you generally never need to speak to anyone

    Cash Shop

    Fast Travel

Those are jsut some of the things I've seen floating around the last couple of days. Most of which I don't personally see as issues, but there are of course differing opinions.

No game is entirely build with possitives..

But from the interviews and the statements of Arenanet i allways get the feeling that they understand most of my gaming needs. Thats why i don't want to recall my personal enthousiasme based on hype, but in this case its based on the fact that finally someone is doing most things right

Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)

I wasn't asking for my own knowlege. I know where GW2 is going to have issues. At least for me and I know I am not alone.

The point is that each person needs to be able to answer this question. If a reader cannot objectively asnswer or doesn't believe there are any (big ones..There are always big ones) Then for them the game is over hyped.

There is a cash shop; this game is invalid.

  • CeridithCeridith Member UncommonPosts: 2,980

The claims of a lack of tanks and healers in this game always makes me chuckle.

To be honest, the more I have seen the less I have liked.  Cash shop was just the last straw to be honest.  I was once hyped for this game but now all I see about the features I was once excited about is:

    1) Dynamic events = Same old kill/fetch/fedex/escort quests but stringed together.  Events reset after a relative short time

    2) RvRvR = Buying influence with gold with gems with real life money = pay2win

    3) esport PVP = Same old MMO battleground system but without the hook of progression.  FPSers do this better

    4) Open world = Many zones that require loading screens plus fast travel teleports reduces illusion of open world.  Plus no open world PVP except in RvRvR instances

    5) Cash shop = Anet bastardizing game mechanics to maximize this.  Mystic chests:  Go to cash shop to buy mystic keys!  Armor/weapon repair:  Go to cash shop to buy repair bot!  RvRvR influence boosts:  Go to cash shop to buy gems/gold to buy influence!  Sidekicking now only downkicking:  Go to cash shop to get EXP boosters!

I'm sorry, but the hype is overblown in my opinion.  And if you go back a couple months, many of my posts were as excited as the current crop of GW2 fanatics.  But as an older gamer, I'm less prone to keeping the blinders on as more details emerge.  Almost every detail has been a dissapointment to me.

GW2 "built from the ground up with microtransactions in mind"
    1) Cash->Gems->Gold->Influence->WvWvWBoosts = PAY2WIN
    2) Mystic Chests = Crass in-game cash shop advertisements
