Jack_Target DUST is nothing more then a online FPS and is console only..infact it will only arrive on PS3. Sure its sort of linked to EVE where corporations can hire you to fight on planets. But beside the fighting there isn't anything else you do. You will fight on maps and only vs human enemies there will be no PvE in it what so ever. Also the ammount of players vs each other will be drastic limited, you won't see hundreds of people there on the same map.
Warhammer 40k DM as PvP only game won't succeed i fear. Look at warhammer online, they where mostly pvp and provided a very poor PvE. The game died within 3 months...with people leaving there was less and less PvP. If you only focus on PvP you take a big risk, you already exclude a big part of MMO players who don't care for PvP and if you don't get enough players you run into problem that PvP can be hard to find or unbalanced. A good MMO will provide both so both sides will be pleased. I do think WH40kDM should have open world pvp rather then silly instanced PvP even on PvE servers they should have PvP zones, although i would play PvP cause that does seem to make more sense in its universe. For shooters and such its okay to make a multiplayer only game like Battlefield used to be but they didn't provide any big worlds and the maps scalled with the ammount of players so the combat would always be close...something you can't do with a MMO. And with a big world you run into the problem that the players are to scattered around for having active battles.
5. I agree there needs to be a real gameplay difference and feel to the CSM vs. SM, but I disagree with the Space Marines having to feel like some Paladins. Yes they are basically enhanced using the DNA/gene-seed of The Emperor himself but they are still men, supermen, but still men.
They perform mass murderings of innocents just to make sure, and often do things with little regard what anyone else has to say about it. They are in the "good" spectrum end of things in 40K but I really would not call them paladins, if you need some holy term for them, then "fanatics" might be better.
4. Orks die by the thousands in Space Marine the game because they are mostly the weak Orks, the Orks that has Imperial Guardsmen as the counter unit and Guardsmen die by thousands too. I'm quite sure there's no playable basic Guardsmen or basic Ork, there's so many better "versions" of the basic units, and separate pools of elite units to pull from for every army.
3. I agree fully, no "attributes" based leveling where you gain health from squirrel to god and so on. It's one single feature that can destroy a WH40K game, there just simply isnt a Space Marine with 10 times less "health" compared to some similar unit, but there can be a Space Marine novice with less ability on the battlefield. Similar system that Space Marine MP has would do fine as long as it would be a hundred times more complex for a MMO, with that system a lvl1 can kill lvl41, but lvl41 has more tools to do so.
2. Again I have to mention Space Marine the game here, absolutely love the customization, the armour customization mechanics should be taken from there definately.
However, the colours, not so much. I wont accept a 40K game where I see rainbows running in the battlefield from each side, with everyone having a different colour scheme and details. If Vigil says we play Black Templars we should stay true to their colours. Also Black Templars are the only space marine chapter that supports the MMO style by numbers, it's the only space marine chapter that boldly breaks the "only 1k marines per chapter" rule.
There's few downsides to Black Templars though, they do not use nor tolerate or accept psykers and the sorcery like. I dont know what classes there will be in the game but if Vigil respects the 40K lore I'm curious to see how they go about this, or if the sides truly will be very different, like CSM having sorcerers, and space marines having say... Terminators on their place ^^
1. Yes vehicles, and more vehicles
THQ has a lot experience with the 40K universe, and knowing their previous work I trust them fully to deliver, it's just the development team with this particular title that I have not much clues about.
One more thing we need with the game right from the launch, the iconic quotes and battle cries, taunts, gloats and morale boosts of the 40K battlefield like in Dawn of War. It was the one big thing I missed in the Space Marine shooter, along with the marines not wearing helmets.
About the SM tank, Eldar melee etc etc bs, please no, just no. Guardsmen and Space Marines fighting side by side is alright ofcourse but dont mix Eldar in there, let them be Eldar amongst their self. If the Eldar will be part of my Imperium faction you better give me the option to player kill then...
Well I'm not too familiar with the 40K franchise as others in this thread, but I have tried Dawn of War and Space Marines if thats enough.
One thing I do hope, along with the usual innovative gameplay, is the multiple playing experience with different classes, different classes should play differently, not to mention lesser focus on the trinity.
For example,
one class can play like a semi RTS like in Dawn of War, where you are focus on troop manipulation (not just one pet, but perhaps a troop of 6 soldiers) so you play like a commander.
Then we can have space marines as warriors, gameplay similar to Space Marines, shooter and a touch of action gameplay.
Lastly, we can have another class that plays more along the lines of traditional combat, you are focus on combining multiple skills together to win, like Guild Wars 2 (yes it isn't too traditional, but compare to the ones I mentioned before, this resembles the traditional combat much more)
How much WoW could a WoWhater hate, if a WoWhater could hate WoW? As much WoW as a WoWhater would, if a WoWhater could hate WoW.
Originally posted by moxfactor man, about the customization. i've been a Salamander fan for over 10 years, and i would love to get in the game, join my dark skinned brethren, and burn the living crap out of everything. and as Salamander, i would be better with a flamethrower, than say, a Space Wolf. if the details are properly made, this should be the game of the century. however, having to cater an online audience who are accustomed to whining about "fairness" in pvp, would we have a game where a lowly goblin be able to play as a terminator's equal? or since this should be an epic size game, would we be able to play as a squad(ala original Syndicate), which then numbers could balance out the game and the player playing as a squad leader. it would make more sense than to play as a single character in an enormous world such as W40K.
This is the best post ever concerning a WH40K MMORPG. I remember a tag line that once said "in the 41st millenium there is only war". In such an environment it would be extremely cool to create a MMORPG where players controlled squads, not individuals, a sort of "this is the dark future, there are no heroes, only casualties" mentality. It would also break the mold of normal MMORPGs and make the game unique in a very easily identifiable way.
I would love to be the leader of an orc squad with moves like "Send in da gitz", "Frag dem, boyz!!" and "Chaaaaarge!!" or similar. A sort of extreme pet game that would make even minor skirmishes between a few players be a real confrontation between several avatars. It would also level the field of three Space Marines in a squad vs. perhaps 10 Orks. Levelling up would also mean a whole range of options, do you include another member in your squad or do you upgrade one of your Bolters to a Plasma Gun. The possibilities are endless. Even more true to the grit of the world would be if the squad members had names and when they died, they died. A new member was added to the group (same skill set (no level drain) but slightly different looking and with a new name). Could be Epic and tragic at the same time.
1. Factions As has been said too many times to count, more than two factions is the way to go. It works better for the fluff, it's something relatively new, and it works just as well if not better for balance.
Is that why during the major events its usually split uop between order and chaos?
people need to get over the fact that sides ally in 40k, they do, there not stupid and wont refuse to work with others when it will result in there death.
I do not think they're going to have more than two factions in the game. They've been working on the game for 5 years or so...if they were going to have more than 2 main factions, they would have designed it in 5 years ago.
In TSW, there are three factions who are working against each other in PvP, but who are able to allie with each other in PvE content. You won't have a mixed faction guild or anything like that though.
They could maybe do something similar, where there is another NPC faction on that world, and you can allie with certain sub-factions with the opposing faction to get rid of the NPC faction or PvE content. Then which ever faction has the most people in the group proceeds to kill their former group mates. :-)
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
The whole faction discussion isn't even worth it. Vigil stated there will be 2 factions and that's the way it will sadly go. There was an outpouring of requests for 3 factions to the company when this info first came out (over a year ago now). Unfortunately they ignored said feedback and are continuing with 2 factions.

A year ago was three or four years into development. It was too late. In all honestly, it was too late as soon as they set the design though. The game is going to cost $50 Million as is. Adding a third faction would have pushed the cost up even higher.
They could still do something interesting with sub-factions though.

People are also forgetting that it is the will of GW. What people don't realize is that GW has to approve every design decision that gets made. It was the same with WAR, the Ultramarines movie, Dawn of War, and even Shadow of the Horned Rat (taking it back oldschool). So go complain to Matthew Ward, it was probably his fault.
My biggest wish/hope is that they dont water down the 40k universe for these snot nosed kids. It is not a childs game. Slaanesh should be twisted in all the carnal pleasures there are. Nurgle should be rotten, Khorne should be blood lust and blood crazed. People should die in graphic and violent ways. None of these kids deaths with no blood, no guts, and censored content, so you can sell more copies to moms and dads who dont know what little timmy is playing.

It's a pity the ratings system don't allow for toggles. A "blood, gore, sex and candy" toggle would fix it all.
With that said, I disagree. Generally, proper gore requires either an explosion of blood or bodies made in "pieces." Shoot off a piece, and it comes off the same way every time. Anything more requires far too much programming time, and I'd choose solid gameplay over fancy graphics any day.
The trailer shows that there will be blood in the game, and that's enough for me. Having a dark, sinister world doesn't require extreme amounts of blood and gore; just extreme violence and hate. After all, people don't die brutally unless they are killed brutally; anything else and it's just over the top.
I am hoping for some sync kills like in the DoW games though. Seeing a helpless widdle Space Marine sliding down the sword of an avatar of Khaine would just tickle me to a happy death, especially if it were a player controlled Space Marine.
Fact is Warhammer 40k is actually too big for an MMO to entirely encompass. So they need to focus on what people want....
Excuse me?
You think that the WH40K setting is too big for an MMO?
THAT is what makes it a potentailly fantastic IP for everyone (Developers, Gamers, Producers and even retailers!)
IF (and that is a BIG IF) the developer does it properly.
The hard part is figuring out where to start and designing tools to make continued developement easier.
There is so much potential for expansion here (if the game is good to begin with!) that it could keep Vigil going for years.
They need to focus on what people want most for the initail release. And they need to do it well enough to maintain interest until they can do an expansion to release more of what people want... and not get too greedy about it along the way.
Can't be done?
Relic managed to do it with the same IP.
IMO this is the only way the game will really work. Start with just a few of the races/factions (Marines, Chaos, and Orks for example) then add in more with later expansions. It may make for a slightly slower start as some people may wait for "their" race, but this would open the door for continued growth.
To balance out orcs and other races who says you only have to play a single character. Simple solution: rather then control an orc, control a squad of 8 of them as a single unit. An 8 player group of orcs then is in reality 64 orcs.
Even though no MMO can host 9-10 warring factions, it would be great to see the races broken out into more than just two sides to fight it out.
MMO's can't host that many warring factions? It has nothing to do with can't, and everything to do with don't. Honestly, it would be epically awesome if this happened. Let the players establish the truces and alliances in the game, don't force us down a certain path.
Just because your view of MMO's and PvP is short sighted, doesn't mean it can't be done. The main reason it isn't done, is becuase the average gamer is retarded. Games have become so dumbed down, and if everything isn't just handed to them on a silver platter, it "sucks". The first thing to decide is if they are going to make a gamer's game, or a casual game that 6 year olds can play. I am hoping for the former.
Well I have to say.. Really I hope this game plays more like Planetside did than a regular MMO. However Planetside with mobs in it with advanced AI. Or maybe a hybrid system like Tabula Rasa had. I want skills to still matter..
If they are going to allow people to play things like the Imperial guard as guards men. They really need to make that a pet class. Kinda like The Necromancer from Age of Conan, Where as you level you get more Grunts in your Squad (IE your pets) because a Space Marine can stand toe to toe with 10 guardsmen and live. THis would make it more lore like and immersive,
As for guilds in this game. I say get rid of them. Base the game off the lore. Sure allow people to have friends lists and groups for chat etc etc. However if your going to play as a Dark Angel. Then that is the chapter your character (space marine) is affiliated. Your missions will come from them. Make it where you can move up in the Chapter rank etc. Kinda like in elder scroll. As you advance You might get Chapter Influence. Which you can spend on Wargear.
Speaking on Spending I dont want to see credits. or money Keep it as an influence system
Something along the lines of.
Your an Ultra Marine. Anytime you die. You Respawn with a Suit Of Power Armor, and a Bolt Gun and bolt pistol as these are basic issue. You want a heavy bolter sure thing, go to the Ultramarine Armory and use (spend) your influence to purchase one. However when you die you respawn with your Suit of Power Armor and bolt gun. No heavy bolter.. If you have the influence you can always purchase another one. This means your not running around with bags and bags of stupid stuff like in most other MMOs. As its not nessessary in 40K
Put in ways to unlock certain weapons at the armory also, or certain relics... IE during one of your missions you found a Relic Thunder Hammer that has certain bonuses on it. Now anytime you go to upgrade from your Basic Issue that Relic Thunder Hammer is available to you (by using your influence of coarse)
As for Factions. Im really of mixed opinions on how they will be able to do this successfully. I am in agreement that a 2 way faction War is the WRONG way to do it though.
I guess if I had to choose a 4 way faction war it would be ok
Space Marines with Imperial Guard
Eldar alone
Chaos SM with Chaos Cultists (I dont see Deamons as a playable faction)
I think every race should be separate, with the ability to team up with other races if desired. So much of Warhammer is the politics. The Chaos wanting something, corrupting the Orks to help them out, Marines get pissed at Orks, they encroach on Eldar plans, then they get pissed off and join one side or the other. It could just go on an on, with all these factions warring against or allying with eachother when the time comes.
A 2 sided system is a terrible idea, enough said about that. 3 sided would be better, but still not really fit the IP very well. Races acting independently sounds better to me. This could be taken farther with it being guilds and alliances at war with eachother, not just "this race is fighting this race", look at games like EVE online for example, there is so much politics and stuff going on in that game, and it is ALL player run. I just don't want to see 1000 year old grudges between the High Elves and Dwarves thrown out the window "to make the game have 2 factions" like what happened with WAR.
Make it epic, make it realistic, leave the dynamics up to the players, and I think you will be heading in the right direction. I also really like the ideas of a skill based system than leveling. No clue what they are doing with that, but I can't wait to hear more
Yeah it's been scrapped. It's being changed into a Single Player FPS-RPG. So on the good side at least it can't be massively dissapointing. There's still hope they'll make something better down the line.

3+ factions or GTFO.
Most of this thread can be summed up by the statement, "I will wish for impossible things, and then be upset when they aren't delivered."
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
No clue what they are doing with that, but I can't wait to hear more
i agreed with the most of the people.
They have to make more "sides" than two...
Actually 4 side is enought + 1 npc faction.
playable: Chaos,Imperium,Eldar,Ork
Npc: necron
Aye totally agree. Although a list without tyranids feels wrong
Good list but we can add mayny more things as well.
Open world anyone and not instanced crap like swtor?
Wan't this game cancelled....maybe im wrong.
Yeah it's been scrapped. It's being changed into a Single Player FPS-RPG. So on the good side at least it can't be massively dissapointing. There's still hope they'll make something better down the line.
