barely any choice of skills

bishboshbishbosh Member Posts: 388

everyone who is the same class as you will have exactly the same weapon skills as you. why is there no choice? the only skills you can change are the healing, elite and utility spells but everyone will still have access to these. doesnt seem very RPG like to me.

The skill list is the same for every class in EVERY mmo.  At least in GW2 you can't always predict which ones the other folks will have available at the same time.

Not that you are going to believe this, but if you factor in skills, traits, runes, and weapons (the added effects from weapons that don't have to do with weapon skills), you will find that the number of options is pretty high...too bad nobody under stands that having limitations on the number of skills you can have on your bar at any given time means MORE diversity, not less.

I used to TL;DR, but then I took a bullet point to the footnote.

You seem to have the same choices as most other mmorpgs, it is just a matter of when you make those choices.  For the traditional mmorpg you make those choices while exploring/in combat.  In guild wars and guild wars 2 you make that decision before heading out and are limited to that decision until you change it to something else.  It is up to each person which they prefer.  This originally was my main sticking point with the game as it was with the original.  I prefer to have to make my decisions as the combat is taking place, not before.  It is part of the "meta" game to me, I just don't happen to care for it.  Everything else about the game seems to be what I would like, but I never did enjoy the first guild wars mainly because of the limitations on the number of skills available at any given time.

Incorrect sir. Dark Age of Camelot has 3 Seperate factions with Each faction having a unique class, some spells across has same effect but on say Albion for Crowd control, you need a good Sorc And/or Cleric. For Hibernia, the best CC and instant Mezz is from a bard. For Midgard, the Healer class has the awesome instant aoe stun, and with castable clarity which increases melee speed a huge ton for the 10-20 seconds it lasts, but no other classes have anything compare. There are melee weapon speed buffs but on Hib its a permant castable buff from a Druid. On Albion, for that speed boost the Theurgist has the best (which is a caster/pet class)

So essientially there are similiars in spells but not one is identical across the few dozen classes available across the 3 factions.

devs are lazy and this way it would be easier to "balance" pvp. just a guess though.

yes but thats not what hes talking about, he said that every person of the SAME CLASS has the SAME SKILLS (emphasis not yelling). basicly all theurgists have access to the same spells/skills etc. doesnt matter if each faction doesnt have the same classes you can still predict what skills they will have based on level and class.

Have you ever played a collectable card game? All players have a pretty standard strategies which are expanded with different cards.

If you can only pick 3 (one elite, one heal excluded) cards, changing 1 card means changing 33% of your build. This is a major major change in the way you will play.

You weapons really contain your 'basic attacks' while your other bar is for making yourself somewhat unique.

Play for fun. Play to win. Play for perfection. Play with friends. Play in another world. Why do you play?

The way DAOC specs worked, two characters of the same class could be almost entirely different.  A mend spec healer had a totally different skillset than an augment spec, or a pacification spec.  Or any number of different ways to combine the three.  and which spec you went for would dramatically change the whole way the character played.  Was a balance nightmare, but it was well worth it for how much it brought to the game, IMHO.

    When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.

An elementalist playing daggers or playing staff swaps 20 skills out at the same time and turns intoo a whole different class..

An elementalist has a totall of 97 skills (so far) of which he can only select 29 at the same time.. 20 bound to the weapons..4 class skills... and 5 selectable skills.

In some of the best games available GW, EQ you only had 8 skills in total and that was it... now you have many more skills, based on 7 choices.. LH, RH, healing, 3xUtil,elite.  Add to that your MAster traits and there is more then enough to choose from.

Tough somewhere in the future i hope they'll raise the skillbar to 12... giving you 2 more skills to choose from. Where the new skills six could be a special skill tight to your weapon, to add a bit of diversity to the weapons and another utillity skill. THis could be done with an expansion pack.

Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)

Are you really not understanding what the guy is saying?

So what if 2 of XYZ class COULD have different skills/spec? His point is that in DAOC, as well as just about every other MMO, characters of the same class HAVE ACCESS TO all of the same skills, traits, spec, etc.

It's kind of the same in GW2. A double dagger thief will play much differently than a double pistol thief and they both play differently than a dagger and pistol thief. Or a sword and dagger thief or a sword and pistol thief. And those are just the 5 weapon skills.

In addition to those you have 3 different heal skills and a whole bunch of other utility skills to choose from. Add to that a whole bunch of class and racial elite skills and it's quite possible that even two thieves, both wielding double daggers, will have completely different heal, utility and elite skills.

    @OP,

I am not sure if you are serious or not. Lets assume you take base any other MMO, all of the chars in them have the same skill set and stats late game, gear and perks/traits/talents being the only difference. Gw2 has the latter one and your stats diverse from others as you put points into stats. For warrior you can have awful lot of different weapon combinations, also for example you can have metric tons of skills with engineer's toolkits, some1 else mentioned elemantalist attunements. Beside that, you have your utilities and your elite at your disposal. GW2 have more customization than any other game i played, clearly. Rift might had bunch of available combos as well for example (which appealed to me at first) but late game, your only option is to choose the flavor of the month build.

Furthermore, guild wars 2 is not about having different skills to PWN your enemy, it is about teamwork and player skill.

I am sick of telling this same sentence but two of the same 8 man build in GW1 had an enormous difference when a top 25 rank guild battled rank 500+ one. It was like something was imbalanced if you would only observe the health bars of both teams, the difference was pure teamwork. While still having this quality GW2 brings you awesome unique builds.

You should have played GW1, then.  Only eight skills available at any one time and the devs were always trying to balance things for PvP.  If they are lazy, they picked the wrong way to design the game.

  • BetakodoBetakodo Member UncommonPosts: 333

He might be serious. I mean look at some of the press beta vids that show the skills available. For thief, I saw only about 8ish elite skills and maybe 4 rows total of utility and heal skills combined. Kind of takes away the build fun if you're limited to choosing 5 skills and your two weapon sets. The weapons skills seem like the meat of the skills you'll be using too because the utility skills have such long cooldowns.

    ???

Each class has multiple weapons to choose from. You can't specialize in all of them. Well u probably vcan, but from a (i need to know how to work my character consistently) you only need to specialize in the two you swap.

You can't just say (yu only get utlility and healingand elite.  Those are big. They will help define your combos and how you work your character.  Play around in one of the character creators floating around.  I was testing guardian builds. Depending on the route i went and how i assigned my traits i had 3 different ways of playing, all still using the mace/shield combo.
