Obsidian To Collaborate On Wasteland 2 If New Goal Is Reached

Developer InXile Entertainment said it reached an agreement with Obsidian Entertainment to collaborate on the Wasteland 2 Kickstarter project if it reaches a goal of $2.1 million. 

Obsidian CCO, Chris Avellone, will work with the design team. "Wasteland is one of my favorite RPGs of all time, and when Brian asked if I wanted to work on the sequel, I jumped at the chance. While I've worked on Fallout 2 and Fallout: New Vegas, getting the chance to work on the spiritual predecessor to the Fallout franchise is a honor."

InXile founder Brian Fargo added, “I have a history with the guys at Obsidian that dates back to the days of Interplay’s Black Isle studios. Together we created some of the greatest RPG’s of all time, from Fallout 1 & 2 to titles like Icewind Dale and Planescape: Torment. It is great that we now have a chance to reunite on a project like Wasteland 2.”

The Kickstarter project currently sits at $1.6 million. There are 17 days remaining to raise the goal of $2.1 million.

    Won't be long until it reaches $2,1 millions then. They're already at $1,7 million and this announcement should make the fan base go insane.

    Its going to be nice to see a real CRPG again on the horizon , with todays garbage for what passes as RPGs cutscenes and Vo heavy dialouge, with real little game its a thrill to go back to playing a real game again in a world not corridors and themepark rides.

    Guess I'll wait a couple years for the "Ultimate Edition" and Unofficial Community Patches before buying it then.

    Everyone around here already trumpets the Elder Scrolls series. Mass Effect has been a great ride, and games like Amalur and the first DA are a good time as well. We wont even throw in stuff like the Witcher. The Last Remnant, and Lost Odyssey are there  if you are into JRPG.

     

    As far as Obsidion.....I happen to own both Alpha Protocol and Dungeon Siege 3, besides FO:Vegas. Vegas launched with the same damn system locking issues that FO3 did. AP prettty much....nah scratch that....it totally sucked. DS3 was even worse. I believe that is their last 3 games. I didnt even mention SWTOR 2 which they broke all to hell.

     

    The best part: AP used the same conversation type system as BW games. You know, the ones you cant stand. DS3 also had a faction building conversation base that was dependant upon 2 choices. Just like BW once again. They both were pretty linear as well.

     

    Perhaps you should research a companies products before jumping on the bandwagon. /shrug

     

     

     

     

    Asking Devs to make AAA sandbox titles is like trying to get fine dining on a McDonalds dollar menu budget.

    Instead of saying it totaly sucked, maybe you should point out where it failed with objective facts and not because things you hated about it. Others might just have well loved the points you hated about those games.

    Blaming Obsidian for something that wasn't their fault like the New Vegas engine. It shows how much you are biased against them, but then again judging from the post you don't like Bioware either.

    I'm not an Obsidian fan the only game I played and never finished was New Vegas. It didn't grab me like FO3 did, but I'm not biased against them either.

    Agreed, a bit tired of mediocre garbage with tons of VOs and cheap dialogues.

     

    Just give me a real RPG Obsidian, New Vegas was the best RPG i played in the last 6 or so years, and Planescape: Torment is arguably the best RPG of all time.

    And don't forget about Baldur's Gate.

    The story itself was rather boring/generic....bring new guy in and make him the fall guy.

     

    I didnt care for the combat either, although IIRC it did have an auto invis upon bad guys seeing ya. It was a skill to be invested  in, and only lasted a couple secs.  Pretty damn linear, with not that many maps to complete....opening mission, I think 3 safe houses with 3 missions avg each, and finale. So if IIRC, there was like 15 missions or less.  Which is OK if mega sized missions, but dont recall them as such. I guess rather than coming across as James Bond, the game kind of felt like being James Boob. Luckly by playing thru, and saving before a couple of key points I was able to unlock just over half the cheives, and 700ish of the 1000 gamerscore.

     

    It has been like 2 yrs, and many vicodins ago.  Hope ttha       

     

    Dungeon siege 3.....first day release buy. Just like with AP, I played thru once, and it has been sitting on shelf since. Less than half cheivs done for this one.  I enjoyed this more than AP, but it didnt warrant me going back to play more. I would give it a 7....nothing special, yet not earth shattering bad.

     

     

    BTW....hell yeah I blame Obsidion for all the system locks I endured with Vegas.  The issues were known with FO3.....thus they should of fixed the damn thing before launch....not post launch. I am talking about the lock on auto save here. I mean dont get me wrong, I played the crap out of Vegas....just lacking the acheivements for the final DLC, caravan, and break the casino(like 8 total).

    What I wrote didn't seem like a lot of sense that''s from the drinking the night I wrote that I think I was trying to say RPG of today with the exception of The Elder Scrolls and The Witcher franchises a lot of RPGs have become smaller in scale ( game world-content) heavy dialouge based-heavy cutscenes, more simplisitic , more action based. The direction most RPGs have been going lately the past few years have been going downhill take it as you will, but one prime example Final Fantasy, when was the last good FF have you played?

    I wouldn't except game to be like any recent ones. People generaly seem to miss that developers do what they are paid for. And only that. If they are ordered to make ME like game they make one. If they are told they aren't doing QA they aren't and if crap engine is dictated they use it...

    There are a very few developers who can do games they want without non-gaming execs and marketing guys meddling with things. Indies can do it, but most regular devs can't. Often I feel developers are blamed if the problem is with big publishers like EA, Ubisoft and so on.

    I don't see any problem with Obsidian helping, they are after all making game where there isn't any non-gamers involved in decision making... And it isn't aimed to maximize market potential.

    Also Fallouts were a buggy mess, so the tract record on both sides isn't good...

    Might be hard considering WotC axed the whole Planescape universe franchise. Not sure if they will allow for revival and it's them holding the rights.

    Alpha Protocol was their own IP. They intended to make more games until it bombed.

     

    I actually like some of the stuff Obsidion has brought to games. If it werent for the bugs, and end game missing(which was LAs fault), KOTOR2 was friggen awesome. I really enjoyed NWN2. There is an exchange by the little tiefling female thief and another companion part way thru game that had me dying laughing. Mask of the Betrayer was a great expansion IMO. I bought the next expansion, still havent played it, and the final one they delayed like 50 yrs.

     

    So for ideas n stuff, I say go for it. Just let someone else code it, and have final approval.

     

    I am all for party based games ala the old INfinity Engine games. I would love to go back to having a number of them released each yr. I never did finish those other DnD games....I think ToEE and Ruins of Myth Drannor? I grabbed another copy of whichever one GOG carries, even though I still have the disks somewhere. IIRC ToEE wont run unless you have a CD drive, as something about DVD drives uses emulation software it wont recognize. Good ole games is nice as it updates games to run on present operating systems.

     

    So yeah I am happy overall they are making more party based RPGs. I shudder when it comes to Oblivion doing any programming.
