Since, I mainly play mage professions and after playing so many JRPGs and SRPG were the best mages were female. This was furthered by  a game called luminous arc 2 where the story states male cannot be good mages, i started following that rule as well. Also it didn't help that in final fantasy X (fav), fire emblem (7,8) the best mages were female so that added fuel to the luminour arc 2 rule.

    edit:

btw OP I know of a lot of females that only play male characters, so you gotta keep that in mind, its not a male exclusive thing. Anyways the only bad thign about ppl playing the opposite would be if they were trying to role play the gender or pretend to be the gender. I know a lot of guys and some girls that do it, for some odd reason.

But overrall there is nothing wrong with doing it, unless the intent was to benefit from it, by making guys do stuff for you etc, but that would be more creepy than wrong. which is why vent exist to prove or disprove such things.

By the way...It's been years. Don't you guys think it's about time Blizzard added Male Blood Elves to WoW?

I find that concept creepy and wierd. I make a character rather than myself, it's like playing with toys as a child. The only criteria are, does it look good and does it work. I enjoy asthetically pleasing things.

I played a girl in Phantasy Star and it didn't work out because guys were hitting on me.  So ever since then I create guy characters.

I'll sometimes roll female characters when I play single player games though.

I personally won't play any games where I am a female character.

This is a real weird situation, dont know what to think, serious.

Why is that weird? Some people, I would wager alot, plays characters who they can identify themselves with and I would say that identifying yourself with the opposite sex would be weird, unless you have some gender identify issues.

That does not mean that all people play characters which they identify themselves with, just that some do, and then it would be perfectly natural to play the same gender as yourself in RL.

    Its just a game.

A virtual adventure where, like tomb raider, the hero is a female. Its only this, nothing more.

I know mmorpgs are diferent, you normally have options to choose, but dont play a single player game just because the hero is a female is still weird for me, its seems extreme.

Maybe there is mans who dont watch movies where female are the hero ...  this way they cant dream to be on heros place?

Believe it or not, alot of people watching a movie tries to find a character to identify with and find common ground. This happens subconsciously and I would think identify with someone of the same sex is perfectly reasonable and not a bit extreme.

This identifcation I believe happens for all people but is not always related to the sex of the character, it could be to aspects such as values etc but for me personally, I do find it harder to identify to a character of a different sex. Some others may not, I guess people are just different in this way and neither is wrong or weird. It is just how some people are built.

For example most sons identify more with their fathers than their mothers, but not all.

Its not so much that I want to look at a girls bum for hours, its just that I dont want to look at a man backside for hours.

Why does it always come back to backsides.

The backside is kind of what you see the most I guess. I made a Draenei, I regretted it . I quickly got bored of having cow feet image

You know what spooks me off? People who are spooked by this. Honestly, who gives a shit? Should I be limited to playing only one of the three available (free) characters in Vindictus because only one of them is male? -No. Get a grip people. The character on the screen is not you.

This thread surfaces about 4 times a year and every time it gets the same amount of more and more ridiculous replies. It never fails to be a troll magnet.

Get this: Not everyone plays their games like you do. Not everyone really cares what their character is: minotaur, human, male, female... Some are just glad to play the game and thats absolutely fine.

Reading something into someone's character choice is right next to reading personality traits from someone's skull shape or reading the future from your palm: utter nonsense.

There's a reason they're called mmoRPGs. You're playing the role of your character which isn't necessarily an extension of yourself. If you choose to do that, then that's your decision. I've known many many people who were completely different compared to their in game toons.

Personally, I think guys who intentionally play female toons for no other reason than the old: "I'd rather look at a female rather than a male" doesn't make much sense, but whatever. However, again, that's the player's choice and doesn't necessarily mean the guy's gay or a "wussy", etc. Your character can be an extension of yourself, but you'd be a fool to assume someone looks like their in game toon irl. It's usually far from the case lol.

Personally, it doesn't matter to me if a dude's playing a female character, or a chick's playing a male character. The reason I don't personally roll women when I'm making new character's is because I too often relate the gender of the character I'm interacting with to the gender of the player. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but I certainly enjoy living without the confusion, and in a game like SWTOR where there are potential love interests in your story, I usually find it most fitting for the character to reflect who I am as closely as possible (if I'm looking for some connection to the story at all).

What's wrong with gettng tired of busting out the same old Male Warrior...Sometimes another race, sex, or class has better animations. I remember the draenei female having a better look with armor on than the male of the same race did. Sounds to me if the sex of someone's toon bothers you...you better quit tryin to pick up or find women in games. Sometimes women play male characters as well, just to stay away from creepos...think about that for a minute before u complain about a dude playin some broad toon with jugs (maybe he's dainty and likes flowers too).

Well, here is a thougth, we are living in the 21st century and people with different lifestyles, depending on where you live of course, can usually be a bit more free in revealing who they really are.

So having said that, and given the reasonable anonymity on the internet (reasonable) there really is no reason to "lie". They don't need to impress you or anyone else or even have to justify what they actually are.

I think it's  a safe bet that if somone says they play an avatar for "x reason" they probably do.

I am like the OP.  I cant play a female in an MMO because the "extension of me" thing.  I am not weirded out (or as you put it, spooked off) by others who do though.

  • WilyWeaselWilyWeasel Member Posts: 9

I always play female chars in any game I can.. even though Im a straight male.. why.. I have no idea lol.

Maybe the "Butt" thing, maybe I was born the wrong sex, maybe I think it gives me an advantage against 13 year old PvP asshats.

I like to think its cause Im in touch with my feminine side.  Or is it cause I am old, bitchy, bad tempered and generally prefer the company of women cause at least you can get something fun out of them :)

    [mod edit]

If/when I do play a female character, it's usually because the animations and models are better done or more appealing, or because it fits my ideal of what that character should be (ie i rarely make male cloth wearers, or female plate warriors, or male archers, etc etc.) It's not because I'm trying to jerk off to it or have some sort of emotional attatchment to it.

I roleplay a character.  Me, the player, drives it, the character, based on the characters wants, needs, and personality.  It's a similar process to a writer creating a story.

Male or female writers write about characters of any gender or orientation in a novel.

I try to keep my characters interesting as a way to keep gameplay interesting both for myself and others that I play with.  Their genders, orientations, and personalities are wildly different.  It's entertaining and adds a new layer to what would otherwise be a relatively dull world.

I think the response is much simpler than that.

    If *I* was a homo-sexual why would I create a female avatar?

As far as I know Homosexuality and transgender are not the same thing.   Yet this one poster thinks you would create something you are not attracted to.   If a guy is attracted to other men... it would seem more likely they would in fact create a male avatar.. not a female.

I almost always play a female.  If I play a man I'm just messing around, bored with the game, or I want to see if anyone will treat my character different from my female characters, especially if I'm in a tanking role.

When I do make a male character, I will make him as close to my ideal as I can get.  First, to see if I can, second, because I have rather unique tastes, so my character will stand out from the rest, and third, why not?  If I'm going to stare at a male avatar, might as well make him easy on the eyes.

But I never play them long.  And when I create a female avatar, she generally will have several traits in common with me.  Eye color if nothing else.

I find the "because I'd rather look at a female's ass for hours" ridiculous too.

When I make a female character I've learned to run around backwards all the time in game. I'm a breast man.
