They should get ther facts straight...... there is MMORPG's and then there is the rest of the online world.  Without an open world where people can roam freely, its not an MMO, SWTOR was on the edge of being an MMO, seems D3 just is no MMO after all.

So why did they decide to give Diablo 3 its own forums on MMORPG.com?

    Traffic.

    Your pic is cool.

Mission in life: Vanquish all MMORPG.com trolls - especially TESO, WOW and GW2 trolls.

  • No, it's not an MMO or anything remotely like it. There's no persistent world, and the maximum amount of players in a game is 4. Left 4 Dead, StarCraft and Battlefield are closer to being MMOs as they can have more players in a game. Why it's on MMORPG.com I have no idea. That being said, I expect the game will kick ass.

It's not, but having it's own forums here, and talking about it, might increase the chance for advertising funds on this site.

I'm pretty sure I saw a poll several months ago on this site asking us if MMORPG.COM should cover D3. The answer was, overwhelmingly, yes.

D3 is a single player RPG. Co-op mode included, PVP mode to be added at some point later on, possibly as dlc.  It is not a MMO - there will be no persistent world where a large number of people - thousands not tens can play at the same time.  You and your buddies can play together. You and your buddies and some other people from a lobby can play together.  But that is it.

    Currently bored with MMO's.

Then again, if you took all of the words in MMORPG and applied it to Diablo 3... it would fit.

    Massive.. persistence?  Check

How on earth is this massive or persistant at all?

    Mutiplayer.. lot's of players? Check

Then SC2 is an MMO.  Blizzard is targeting a max of 8 people at a single time.  There will be no in game lobbies (with characters) that even have that.  So no, not check.

    Online.. it's online right?  Check

    Ill give you this one.

    Role.. character classes?  Check

Playing.. we play it right?  Check

    Game.. it's a game?  Check

These last 3 just qualify it to be a RPG. So you have an ORPG. That is not an MMO. But even then your going hyper literally with it.  Halo is a role playing game in the literal terms.  You have a role - Master Chieft, Play - You play it, Game - its a game.  Therefore every single game you play is an RPG.  Do you see the issue?

Yeah I know.  We've had this argument in many other threads.  We don't consider it a MMO, let alone a MMORPG, but MMORPG.com deems the game big enough to mention it and create a forum page for it.

    It is what it is.

Its basically about money. Diablo 3 and GW2 are MMOs just as much as yahoo checkers and monopoly online are MMOs. If MMORPG can bring more people to click on it's ads, its an MMO.

You already knew the answer to this question before you posted it.

What is your intent in making this thread when there are several already discussing this topic?

Yeah, the problem is there is lots of gray areas these days.  Sure, Skyrim clearly is not an MMO but many MMOs these days are essentially lobby games with an open world lobby.  And how many people does it take to be massive?  Is 256 enough or does it have to be thousands?  And what if there are thousands of people but in reality there are never more than 20 or 30 doing anything together, usually in instances.  Is that an MMO?

I remember way back when many game sites actually divided reviews into single player and multiplayer.  But once almost every game added a multiplayer aspect they just combined it back into one thing again.  The convergence of standard multiplayer games having massive lobbies, and MMOs devolving into lobby games, the same thing seems to be happening now in some ways.  MW3 is more of an MMO than many MMOs even, which I've lamented about before...

GW2 "built from the ground up with microtransactions in mind"
    1) Cash->Gems->Gold->Influence->WvWvWBoosts = PAY2WIN
    2) Mystic Chests = Crass in-game cash shop advertisements
