The Hype

Lord.BachusLord.Bachus Member RarePosts: 9,686

The hypemeter is to low, with all the hype around this game it should have been the first game topping the 9.+

Never before have so many people been looking forward to a game, never before have so many people put their trust and last hope for an MMO intoo a single game. But most of all, never before has a game had so few negative reactions, because despite all the little criticisme out there, there are so many things that will make the game fun for almost everyone.

Now lets all try and get the hype-meter above the 9, let everyone that hasn't hyped the game yet cast their votes....

(No, i dont think the game is perfect, far from that, but its the best game this genre has seen since WOW took the genre to the mainstream)

Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)

Sigh - if anything post like this shows that there is a long way to avoid fans go crazy with wild expectations.

I think GW2 is already the highest hype game ever on this site and then you want another scale. What about getting real , and realise the real job is not building unreasonable hype, but educating fans in what actual to exspect from this game. Some thing hardcore fans of this community have done for years.

    sigh again!

it's not just hype any more. hype is usually baseless. but ANet has come through on all promises, and people have played the game to witness it.

anyway, i cranked mine all the way up. needs moar.

    Are you in beta?

This game does not really need any hype. If anything else, the expectations need to be toned down. Anet fans are practically treating the game as a religion already, attacking everybody with the slight sceptisism over it.

Wayt untill you get your hands on the game, if you're a true MMO player, you're atleast going to like the game enough to play it for a couple of months, but chances are most likely that you're going to love it as it will enhance your MMO experience with something new.

Take that from someone with hands on experience...  Fun PvE, awesome PvP and lots of more nice things..

Some people are already believing that this game will bring world peace and freedom with a new world order.

    well... they are right

This game, if anything, needs to be down-hyped. People are building up unrealistic expectations of the game in their heads (similar to another game which released recently) and are only going to end up disappointed when they ultimately aren't lived up to.

I already see fans going completely apeshit over the slightest negative remark about their 'precious game'. Hell, just try going into a GW2 thread and stating that the combat looks like 'nothing special'. You'll be immediately flamed, have people post videos, accuse you of trolling... it would be funny, if it weren't so sad.

People need to calm down. It's only a game. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go cry over the fact I won't be buying ME3 (kidding, kidding).

TC have you played GW2 yet? Also by your post i am judging you have played the game and have a max level character already. So i am lvl 80 what do i do now? just grind WvWvW and BGs with no hope for a new gear?

Currently Playing: SSFIV AE, SFxTekken, SWTOR, WoW. Waiting for: GW2, Resident Evil 6.

The hype should be scaled down if anything. It's nearing the point where it will disappoint no matter what because no game can live up to this much hype.

Yes, they've come through on all their promises of giving us another fantasy node farming skill tree esport instanced teleporting hotbar combat centric themepark. GG :)

What would the retention rate be? And I mean people actively playing the game. Not just popping in every other week to see how things are going.

It's very nice that there are no subs to worry about and that there is a cash shop.

WoW has shown the best, how great that'll work out. They lost subs but revenues went up.

Even though this game probably could be really great, I just can't see this mmo actually suceeding because of the inevitable backlash that will follow this much hype :/

Let the game speak for itself when it comes out, don't make people expect the second coming of Jesus.

  • EzhaeEzhae Member UncommonPosts: 735

The hype meter really looses it's relvance the more actual info on game You have. I can see it being useful getting relatievely unknown title to get noticed by wider public, but at the point GW2 is it really doesn't need it.

Plus, it's internet. Fanatics will rate it 10, haters will rate 1. Both are wrong.

    You're tempting fate here.

Also, there are threads that almost "challenge" people not to like the game. Most unwise.

If your only reason for playing an mmo is to grind gear (even when you're not enjoying it) then Guildwars 2 might not be to your liking as that's one of the things ArenaNet seems to me moving away from. They are aiming to make an mmo that is actually enjoyable to play rather than being filled with huge amounts of tedious boring gameplay whose only hook is addiction to collecting gear (which is all basicly the same anyway). They just dont seem to be particularly interested in rewarding players for enduring boredom for long periods of time........but then there isnt a sub fee so there is no reason for them to waste the players time like other mmos do. I guess they could have stuck the tired old "carrot on a stick" crap into their game like nearly every mmo has been doing for years, but fortunately they want to make a game that relies on good gameplay instead. Phew!

However if you do play GW2 and enjoy the time it takes to reach level 80 and then after several months you run out of stuff to do and start feeling bored then the answer is simple. You stop playing it (happy in the knowledge that you have got better value for money than any other mmo can offer) and play something else instead and come back later (free of charge of course) whenever you think there is something else worth experiencing. You dont have to live there. It's just a game.

Anyway who knows? Maybe after playing GW2 you might find it difficult going back to the old grinding mmos anyway as the terrible gameplay they offer might become more apparent in comparison.

People should go right on ahead and be hyped if they want to.  There are far too many miserable sods in this world that just cannot handle seing others being excited about something. Misery loves company.

    rpg/mmorg history: Dun Darach>Bloodwych>Bards Tale 1-3>Eye of the beholder > Might and Magic 2,3,5 > FFVII> Baldur's Gate 1, 2 > Planescape Torment >Morrowind > WOW > oblivion > LOTR > Guild Wars (1900hrs elementalist) Vanguard. > GW2(1000 elementalist), Wildstar

Now playing GW2, AOW 3, ESO, LOTR, Elite D

Guild Wars 2 is going to be an excellent game, but the hype is way over the top.

This seems to happen with every AAA release, but the fanboys for gw2, on this site at least, just seem a bit crazed.

Woe betide any game that releases between now and when GW2 hits - the GW2 mafia will mobilise and flame the game to the ground just in case it might be competition

Indeed... I hope this hype is confined to this site at least. Does anybody know how hyped people even are outside this site?

Its retarded outside of this website, somehow we here manage to be quite civilized about it.

Watching youtube videos of any MMO, or just a single player RPG, or other mmo oriented websites, makes me want to strangle kittens

Hyperbole?  I don't think people are using that term correctly with regards to Guild Wars 2.

    hy·per·bo·le

       [hahy-pur-buh-lee]  Show IPA

    noun Rhetoric .

    1.

    obvious and intentional exaggeration.

    2.

an extravagant statement or figure of speech not intendedto be taken literally, as “to wait an eternity.”

That's what hyperbole means.  Most of us are looking forward to (or are downright excited about) features that we have seen (or played in the case of a lucky few) over the past several years.

This isn't a case of hype ala Star Wars: The Old Republic where James Olhen was doing the rounds saying "you'll find yourself doing things right away that you don't do in other MMOs", "SWTOR is a living, breathing world" and "a bunch of people fighting one giant boss just isn't epic" and other crap along those lines.  What the ArenaNet developers have said is in their game is actually in their game.  You can YouTube anything about Guild Wars 2 at this point.

It's not hype.  It's real.  We're looking forward to what ArenaNet is actually going to deliver.
