A game where you can make a name for yourself

Mr_WolfxMr_Wolfx Member Posts: 176

I know a lot of older games offered this. SWG, UO, AC, even EQ, but in most games now everyone is pretty much equal. There's no specialization. You could have the rarest crafting recipe in a game, but chances are hundreds of others have it. Or you could be a great healer or tank, but even if you have a lot of skill there's still tons of people who can do the same thing as you. I'm looking for a game where if you're really good at something or you really specialize in it, you can gain access to stuff not many people do. DF could easily do it with a few minor changes, instead of everyone being "jack of all trades, masters of everything"  I'd want it to be if you go only with healing spells/skills you can unlock new rare spells, but lose access to damage spells or weapon skills. People focusing on crafting could craft more powerful items, but can't wear certain armors or weapons. So is there any games that do that, kind of giving you that sense of importance, or that you can make a difference in a game?

Yes I have a dream… And its not some MLK dream for equality. …I wanna own a decommissioned lighthouse …And I wanna live at the top… And nobody knows I live there. …And theres a button that I can press, and launch that lighthouse into space.

EvE online is your best shoot, at this point. Its up to date, even of its 8 years old. The constant updates to the grafics engine and updates make the game both look good and be up to date.. EvE is not a game that gets worse by age it gets better...

And its still oldschool so yes you can make a name for yourself.. Single server and the rules set also makes it the most REAL MMO on the market... Some people cant handle it though.. We often joke and say EvE is the game MMO players go to Retire.  When people get fedd up with the Themeparks and want a true MMO they pick up EvE and often never look back..Avrage age is about 28-29... And I have only met 2 kidds that were younger then 15..In 6 years of playing, and both quit in a few months.. Its not a game for childrean..

payers created about 98% of all the items that are used inside the game. As you train over time specialization is a must. You have to be the best at what you do... atlest at first.. Nobody not even me with 126m sp Is the jack of all trades.. I still cant do everything inside the game... But I do the things I do Extreamly well..

    Thanks for the reply.

And, yeah, EvE probably is the closest any MMO is right now. I played for 2 years, and managed to make quite a name for myself, atleast with my corp enemies/alliances. I resub everyone once in awhile to see what's new. Though I'm in search of something that can match that game, but in the fantasy genre..

lineage 2 was a good game to make a name for youfself back in the day, in which case TERA might also do.

Everything creates huge amounts of negativity on the internet, that's what the internet is for: Negativity, porn and lolcats.

Probably going to have to wait until ArcheAge releases.

Any of the smaller indie games.  You can make a name for yourself in those games.  For instance in Mortal Online, there are some crafters who know secret recipes for maybe bows or potions.   The bigger games it's quite hard because everyone can do anything, and there is information on how to do everything plastered everywhere.

Are you looking for "I can do X and 99% of the playerbase can't"?  Or are you looking for "10% of the playerbase knows who I am"?  They're two very different things.  I don't know if EVE offers the former, but it's awfully unlikely to offer the latter to more than a tiny handful of people, simply because the playerbase is too big.

For either option, you might want to try A Tale in the Desert.  You can pick something fairly obscure, be the very best at it, and get known for that.  And it's a small enough playerbase that it's entirely possible for a substantial fraction of the playerbase to know that that's your niche.

If I cared about making a name for myself irl I wouldn't be posting right now. So please go troll somewhere else:)

Thanks for the replies everyone, I'm following ArcheAge atm. Kinda looks like that's the only game that'll be able to match it. Gonna give MO another try too.

And @Quizzical, I think the two go hand in hand. If you know something 99% of players don't know, you'll probably be pretty well known. Maybe not 10% of the playerbase, but the people who need whatever you specialize in will usually be able to find you. Unless of course you go into a niche game like Wurm or ATitD or Haven n' Hearth. And as much as I love ATitD, the lack of combat always drives me away from that game.

Do note that being in the 1st percentile doesn't mean a thing when there are 100k people. Quite frankly though, what you're looking for is a game with a small community rather than a game with special features. Back when I played Conquer Online, everyone pretty much knew everyone. Quite frankly, what you're asking for is quite absurd; if everyone plays that game to try and make a name for themselves, then it'll be just like real life in that the vast majority are unsuccessful.

Well in my OP I guess I worded it wrong, that was more me just naming off my fantasy mmo and venting after playing DF again>.> What I'm really looking for is a game where you can be recognized for how you interact with the community. Like in EQ I knew a few people who spent most of their time just helping people fetch their body when they ended up dying in a bad place. And even though I never met or talked to any of those people, I still managed to hear about it from friends and new players. Or in SWG you could easily be recognized for having a decent crafting/harvesting setup, becoming a jedi, or even being the mayor of a well known player city. And I can name off more then a few examples for EvE.

The thing is, the game doesn't have to have a small community (though it does help). Not everyone will try and make a name for themselves even if the option is given.

Sorry to keep going off on rants, just tired of the current state of MMO's, kinda desperate to find a new one.

if you played in the beta, you'll be familiar with this, but if not i present you a little tidbit from the beta.

there are multiple servers, and there are mutiple parrellel 'instances' of the game right next to one another called channels. that means that you wont  interact with all the people on the server, further fragmenting the population.

even worse is how it actually functions. you can be grouped with someone and enter/exit an instance and your group gets assigned to different channels, making group questing inconvient. it is made negligible since you can chat cross channels (if you use the party chat) but still. and changing channel makes you reload the zone.

unless they introduce 'battlegrounds' with competitive rankings, you wont forge a name. and even then it will only be in PvP. the concept of being the only one able to do something will be unlikely as to a large portion of the server, your existence and the stuff you do (or that happens in general) wont even be seen by your own server.

so personal glorification is not likely from what i've seen so far.

Although these games are not strictly MMO's but MtgO and GW and even poker offer the players a chance to make a name for themselves and earn a lot of money doing so.

Personally I'm a little bewildered why anyone wants to make themself known in an MMO, plenty of ways of getting famous in the real world if your good enough, though if you play games 16 out of 24 hrs then bets are on that they suck at real life imo.

The way the skill system works in DF 2.0 should do it.
