Is it an Upgrade?

Hey all,

Wondering if you can tell me whether a 280GTX is an upgrade over an HD4870? I'm being offered a 280 for free.

    i think the radion card is only a 512mb one, and the 280 is much better, i am still using a nvidia 260 gtx and its a pretty solid card even now, for modern games, and getting one for free, sounds like an awesome deal image

    Yes, it's an upgrade.  It's not a very big upgrade, as a GeForce GTX 280 performs comparably to a Radeon HD 4890, which is really just a refresh of the 4870 tweaked to be able to handle higher clock speeds.  But it is an upgrade, and free is a very good price.

    A GeForce GTX 280 will use more power at load than a Radeon HD 4870 though, so make sure your case and power supply can handle it.  If your concern is your electricity bill, then a GTX 280 will actually use less power than a 4870 at idle.
