Just browsing through the website here and something occured to me, people sure do love to make a ruckus over this game. I know, Ive been living under a rock, its a pretty big rock and it doesnt talk much, so its cool.
Why though? Why so much animosity over this one video game, or at least, the latest and (to some) greatest mmo to come out? Its like a broken record, new hyped game gets released, fans bicker with haters. Obviously because it is popular, and popular things are the most obvious to debate, right? Lazy people are lazy, and its hard to be original when you're lazy. But me, when I browse the internet I just tend to assume that people are being lamers. And just seeking for attention, and it entirely makes sense if you want to look at this way as well.
I started by comparing it to the media, the media will jump all over a hot story and jam it down our throats, and sometimes thats productive. But they're just as equally likely to invent something or dig really really hard to find something that is not really that relevent but market it for a week or two because in reality there is nothing of value to report.
Perhaps that is what is going on here, and why TOR has so many haters. These people have nothing better to do (I know its cliche) have not formed any strong worthwile opinions about anything of note, havent done anything of note, and are simply leaching to the most popular buzz word thing they can attach themselves to and hoping a little shine rubs off on them. Just seems to me a little sad, over a video game. But I digress.
People that actually enjoy this game, Im sure the majority of them dont bother even arguing about it. A very small percentage of people to play these games would bother to comment on this website. In the immortal words of Mel Gibson "you're not going to get famous". Especially not by being an unimaginative douche.

I always hated the people on this website for bashing mmos but for the first time ever I am completely shocked as I agree with the haters.
SWTOR is the worst MMO I have ever played; however it is a very good single player game.
It’s like a single player game with a chat box.
keep in mind that people whinning over here are not making up even .5% of swtor player base. And some people saying how bad it is probably never played it.

When people are fed a line of bullshit and told to be happy with... it usually breeds a bit of animosity. Which is pretty much exactly what happened with TOR and it pissed the players off.
The majority of people who have some gaming experience in MMOs and played TOR.. can't have liked it for very long... and by long I mean they stay for the story... or less.
I say the majority because there's people who like it obviously... but the game offers hardly anything new and what it does offer it doesn't offer very well.
There's a list of games that do things better than TOR.
It really is simple as that.... try and distinquish it from the brainless game-bashing some people exercise.
..Cake..
I now officially hate meta threads that solely exist to discuss how the community behaves towards this or that game, usually based on cod psychology and a limited imagination.
We are here to talk about games, not each other, so lets talk about games.
All this over analysing other posters in thread after thread is boring.
(and yeah, I am aware of what I am saying for the 'but that's what your doing here yourself' brigade)
Gamers are tired of all the half-a** MMOs. Nothing personal, we just demand better.
"Censorship is never over for those who have experienced it. It is a brand on the imagination that affects the individual who has suffered it, forever." - Noam Chomsky
How was this the case? There were no surprises in how the game was made, in the game's mechanics or how the game turned out. The closest thing to a bunch of BS would be the high rez textures that borked enough machines and affected game play enough that BW pulled them without changing the UI option to reflect the change.
I'm never surprised that there are people who don't like games...it would be far more shocking to find a game that everyone likes. What I am surprised at is the amount of righteous indignation at things that shouldn't really even be a surprise.
** edit **
Edited the original post so I can post to the internet without posting nsfw words.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
bullshit.
this is the boards most gamers come to for info and discussing mmos simply because its kinda free of the corporate interests surrounding mmos today.
Most players i know who play mmo DO COME here and post here their opinions.
And the majority of people saying swtor is bad.. they beeing honest. they did play it, they had more or less hopes, and some did like.. some not.. ( most not for this or that reason ).
Always presume people honest and true.
This is a site for discussion about mmo's, what did you expect daisy chain parties?
People have opinions and if you can't handle them then maybe a public forum isn't the place for you.
Easy way to see how it will go for any game.
Just look at the hype, if it is lots of hype, then it will have just as much negative talk.
SWTOR for good or bad, had lots of hype, even had analysts getting in on the action:P First time i can remember that going on.
Hype and the reverse of it, is just the new norm.
I play MMO since open beta of UO.
Swtor is the best mmo i played to date. Maybe it's because i'm 32 now... who knows.

Yest there are alot of Weak minded fools, that is why we try to save them from themselvs by pointing out how bad this game is. Or how the Propganda machine ( EA, BIO) try to spin things to lure people into buying this crap.. Its our duty as citizens to inform the Unenlightend of the Error of their ways...
And many of us want something new to play.. and as long as companies keep making these clone games those projects will never see the ligth of day.. That is why we hate... that is why we rant.. We dont want more of these Instanced, linear worlds were the only thing you can effect is how fast you want ot run in the Mouse Wheel...
you weren't fed anything bioware has always stated the game would be your standard MMO with VO and more story elements. you fed into your own BS if anything.
I should know i did the same thing, when i got into Beta i wanted this game to be SWG 2.0 and when it wasn't i blasted it on the TOR forums and to anyone who would listen. then a few weeks after release a couple friends got the game and talked me into playing i told myself "its not SWG 2 so stop expecting it to be"
I played it for what it is a very well done themepark MMO and you know what I have been having a blast maybe not as much fun as i had in SWG but SWTOR is a damn good game leveling wise .... though i am getting worried about what i will do once i hit 50.
Okay.... here we go.
Alot of people are angry about the game...
It is the only MMO to release recently.
It's a huge publisher with a huge budget.
It's the star Wars IP
Imagine that when Phantom Menace came out it was just a complete remake of the original star wars excpet they replaced all the characters with with Orcs, Elves, and Dwarves
Thats what this game feels like to alot of us. We were fans, we wanted an awesome star wars MMO... we got reskinned wow that is missing some key features and a coat of polish.
So people are sitting at their computer... bored... thinking "why am i so bored?" "If only SWTOR didn't suck"
So their boredom leads to anger... and their anger leads them here. To be angry with other angry people...
"Don't mistake a fun game for a good game... Checkers is fun to play but its not exactly the highest point of gaming design... and definatly not worth $60 plus $15 a month"
Nice baiting OP.
Well played, well played.
9/10
1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.
2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.
3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.
Thas a fairly obnoxious point of view, but entirely expected. I guess you could call me a forum veteran, Ive browsed many different forums on a number of topics, and filled many roles and exchanged many ideas on said forums. Theres is absolutely nothing new or shocking to see here, its pretty much par for the course on all fronts.
I can completely undersand and have participated in, lets say, thorough and repeated debates over sports, movies, typical things. Video games would be no exception. However to focus so much energy on ONE GAME, which just happens to be the newest most hyped game out there, just shows a tremendous lack of originallity and free and creative thought. This isnt pschology, its just general awareness. And awareness should begin with self awareness. I highly doubt the vast majority of these repeated offenders have stopped to consider why they pour so much energy into a game they cant stand. If they did the majority would quickly find theres no logic in it. No, they do so because they feel compelled to. Action without thought is often a great thing, until that action turns habitual, then it can easily become destructive. That is a bit of psychology, DONT LIKE PSYCHOLOGY? GTFO. It isnt a stock market forum either yet these pretentious day traders without the first idea of what they're talking about create new threads about it every other day. So you're going to allow me my amusements, or die as a fool.
Maddox is pretty much the father of blogs and trolling all in the one. Yet he admits openly he rarely cares much about what he rants about and doesnt pay it a second thought. Pretty much the same case here with me. Next time I decide to put my peice down on a topic I assure you it will be entirely different and most likely will have nothing to do with TOR. Thats why Ive been rather succesful at it. I suppose my thread was more just a critique on the habbits of a number of posters who arent really worth naming. Just some friendly advice thats all, and my own opinion. So I suppose if you cant handle MINE you can sit and spin sport.
What else did you think was gonna be the major topic of discussion on a forum site called MMORPG.com except the newest release MMORPG?
If you went to ground zero shorlty after 9/11 what would you be expecting people to be talking about.... the weather?
"Don't mistake a fun game for a good game... Checkers is fun to play but its not exactly the highest point of gaming design... and definatly not worth $60 plus $15 a month"
I've been playing MMOs since summer of '01.
My first game was a little-known 2D game created by Nexon called Dark Ages.
My 2nd was Ragnarok Online
3rd, and favorite, was EQ, just after the PoP expansion came out.
My opinion on SWG...its neither spectacular or terrible. It does little new, but doesn't do the old terribly. I'm glad I tried it, but I probably wont stay very long.
Overall...its mediocre. Mildly entertaining. A good time-waster when I'm otherwise bored.
Why did I add all that stuff about my gaming history?...I'm otherwise bored. But I'm at work right now so I cant play SWTOR.
I think some people are so up in arms about SWTOR is because it bothers them that KOTOR 3 through 10 with an online coop component is being called an MMO.
In other words, SWTOR is yet another MMO that is devolving MMOs into being more linear, instanced, and solo... and worst of all it's attracting a lot of attention and praise from certain circles for being so.
That's not to say SWTOR is a bad game... but it's very arguably a bad MMO.
Hang on a moment OP...
Are you one of those who just simply doesn't believe there are players who are unhappy with the game?
You're deluded to think that there aren't major problems with this game just because it works for you.
There are a LOT of people for whom the game just doesn't perform well enough, despite high-end rigs. Rubber banding/low fps, ability delays - they made that up?
Others have issues with bugs, lack of content, lack of foresight even... they're not allowed to speak out?
I suggest you take off the rose coloured spectacles and open your mind to a wider opinion.
I've said it before and I'll say it again. EA/ Bioware shot themselves in the foot. They hyped up this game to unheard of levels, spent more money on marketing than any MMO release to date, and used key words like "innovative combat", "new way to play MMO's" , and "Revolutionary game engine".
They promised much through cheap tactics and spinning their product, and now they suffer the consequences of almost universal scorn from MMO veterans who know better.
The end.
hello, were you in the beta when high-rez was active? myself personally had 0 issues on my 4 year old pc with the game and actually i don't remember many (if any) complaints about how high-rez was breaking peoples machines. Maybe you have been not paying attention but there was a big ruckus over the high-rez textures from BW first saying that there was a bug with them and they are being removed just until the bug was fixed and then they totally changed their story...get what you call BS right please.
I guarantee that had EA marketed the game as an RPG with an online coop component, and not as an MMO, there would be a fraction of the bitching that exists about this game today. Though the downside (for EA) is that they'd have suckered in a lot less people and would have a much harder time justifying the $15 month sub.
When I go to McDonalds I expect to see hungry low income people getting their grub on.
I however dont expect to see some fool harrassing the 16 year old girl working the counter because he's not happy with their fine cuisine. Thats note worthy, in fact and I'd nudge the person next to me and attempt to share a few snickers at their expense.
Dont like being mocked, dont act like a tard in public. Last I checked this is a public forum and theres plenty of mouth breathers around to observe. Dont hate just cause I get my kicks outta people watching. Its actually the best thing about forums, and fast food joints.
I really couldnt give two shits about this game, yet. I reserve my judgement for when/if I play it.
I also couldnt give a shit less if someone is unhappy with the game. Im indifferent to your unhappiness.
Im not deluded about anything. Theres "major problems" with pretty much every mmo. If you havent learned this by now and still buy them expecting something different you suck as a consumer and deserve to be unhappy.
