I can only comment on WoW. I played on Arthas when WoW launched, the queue times were very long and the lag was unbearable. SWTOR ran damn nice when it launched. I never had an issue. Sure there were a few bugs here and there, but at least I could play
I have been playing MMO's since 2000-2001. I think 2011 was the best year for MMO's since 2004. Rift and SWTOR are both excellent games with almost flawless launches . Each has its own strenghts and weaknesses but no one sane can argue that both are not great games.
It seems that companies are beggining to understand the danger of releasing a bugged/unfinished/rushed MMO , which is great news for the future. Too many good games like Vanguard and AOC have been crippled by their unfinished launches.
As for how games like Rift or SWTOR compare with older games . You cannot compare a launch in 2004 with a launch in 2011 . But also you cannot compare a game that launched in 2001 or 2004 which has a decade of polish , content , custimazation and balancing , with a game that just came out a couple of months ago.
Todays crowd is much more demanding than us gamers from the late 90's . Had WoW launched today in the state it was back then it would have been a massive failure.

Yeah in the pioneering days of games and mmo's when things were much more exciting as every year was froth with new ideas and new experiences i think our general threshold for bugs and problems was much higher. I know mine was.
Now a days, I've very little tolerance, I'm not talking little bugs that's fine, as long as the game isn't a plethora of them, I'm less tolerant of enjoyment hindering and time wasting bugs as in i can't launch after a patch or the game disappears to desktop out of the blue, or blue screens, or i have to refer to other threads on getting the game just to run, changing drivers, it's bye time!
Example swtor not one problem the entire time i played, wow to this day has never flaked out it just works. Those games i will play, and have permanent homes on my PC. Games such as eq2 which was always a nightmare of problems, lotro i'd get the occasional random blue screen, done not playing them anymore and will never reinstall them as i don't need the hassle.
I firmly believe they are waking yup to the reality of how important a solid experience is.
Which of these games was nearly unplayable for two weeks because servers were down so much? Which of these games launched with zero PVP incentives or objectives? Which of these games launched without any PVP gear in them? Which of these games announced multiple hero classes at launch and never delivered? Which two had bugs where you fall through the universe, with no known fix? Which two had randomly crashing dungeons? Which two had unlootable loot (one of them still has it to this day, and it's not the newer one)? Which one had a bug where you would remain crouched after looting?
A little perspective, please.
Which one of these had the budget of a major motion picture and the advantage of being able to reference over a decade of previous MMOs to learn from and still made the same exact mistakes?

Well erm SWTOR has no real pvp incentive esp on ilum.
Bugs falling thru the world had been widely reported in SWTOR.
The UI freezes often and has animation lag till today in SWTOR,one of the many reason ppl play imps.
Very poor faction balance with ZERO plans on how to balance it.
Very poor reward system."hey look i am rank 59 and opened 200 bags and still missing half my gear"."Hey look i just started pvping few days ago and have full set and so those my companion!"
EV has bosses that bug easily and sometimes u go thru all that stress and guess what log does not update .Worse then any raid loot bugging which it does on HM by the way.Means the one thing you could have gotten guaranteed from the raid is gone and ofc BW CSR is legendary as not helpful.
quests do not update despite them claiming they fixed it.

Which of these games feels like it its worthly of a 2011/2012 release and vastly different from 2001....

WOW was way buggier than SWTOR at launch yes
I don't like SWTOR now I've hit 50 as SWTOR is exactly like RIFT which is exactly like WOW - im bored of that shit.

Oh, how idiotic can some responses be.
The Old Republic release was worse than Vanguards? Spellborns? Aions (western)? Age of Conan's? Warhammers?
All the games I mentioned above make The Old Republics launch look like the greatest in MMO history.
