There is a free 14 day trial available. But then to continue playing you have to subscribe. The game I think is worth it as CCP are always making improvments and adding new ships etc into the game.

What's nice about the 14 day trial is that it doesn't count against your first 30 free days when you pay $20 to buy the game. Anyway...the trial is easily worth the download considering you don't need a credit card or much of anything besides a way to download the game to start playing.
