What Captain and Ship Class is most needed?

I just started playing and I was wondering what captain and ship class to be. So my question is what types are most needed: DPS, Tanks, or Healers, and what clases fill that role best.

http://forums.startrekonline.com/index.php   A question best asked here . Mostly because , people actually over there care about the game . Create and account and feel free to ask.. I had a past account and was able to log in and post , if I so desired .

DPS.  Most all Tactical, Science and Engineer players I see at endgame are all running Escorts of some kind.  Healing is rather useless IMO as the Borg can do more damage in 1 hit than 4 people are able to heal for.

There is no "needed" ship in this game. You play what fits your style. If you like to hit and run, run an escort. If you like to punch it out, go with a cruiser. If you like tricks and gimmicks while supporting others, then run a science ship.

Was able to get my old account active and got back on with my Science ship(Tactical captain) and been having a blast.

It is not all that much better.  The changes that have taken place over the past 2 years have not been that dramatic IMO.

I agree with ShardWarrior. Fanboi's will shovel sunshine because , well they're fanboi's . Oh has it been mentioned that , it's free to play , because that seems to be the biggest most important point . ( not that Cryptic has greatly improved the game , because they really haven't . Ground combat is a mechanic that's in Champions that they expanded on and ported on STO , then acted like it was huge new innovation to STO . The foundry it seems is what Cryptic will rely on to fill the content hole in the game , since only paying customers are allowed to add content to a Crpytic game. )

Also level 36 in a weeks worth a playtime . It's definitely faster leveling curve then when I started my toons. F2P + low content + fast leveling = boredom with in a months time .  Even with player generated content .  Now it's become the mission of the Cryptic minions to the push game on various boards and tout how great it is , hoping everyone has forgotten . Heck GrandNagus even made an appearance to say goodies are coming to celebrate the 2nd year . Whoopie !

Perhaps it would help if you could specify what you define as "immense" improvements?  I would not deny there have been updates to the game over the past 2 years that have made minor improvements, but they were not anything I personally would call "immense improvements".  The game is still extremely light on content from my perspective and there is still a very long way to go before STO reaches what in my experience is a "launch ready" state.

first of all there is loads of ground missions that were not there, that are now, also the foundry.now i,m not saying there is a bucket load of content but from my perspective there is loads..i take my time when playing..i dont rush..so there is more than enough to see me thru a few months til more comes..also..not sure if you were having a dig at cryptic..here is a link..this should give you an idea of what restrictions they were under when atari had them..see what you think..and also look at what they got planned..i dont think cryptic are the bad boys here

I am sorry but really? Lets all blame Atari, the people that tried to build the game are not the bad guys?

Yes the new ground combat is night and day for me, it is that much better than the crap that they launched the game with. So yes thats a plus.

I will also say that some of the space missions, the episodes and stuff add a lot to the space game. So ya give it a try, IF you truly play it free.

You are still dealing with Cryptic here. They take short cuts, and promise the moon. They rarely deliver. So just keep in mind who and what you are dealing with. A small company that has a track record. And also one trying to fund another game as well:) Take anything that comes from them in the way of promises very carefully.

I would also take anything Cryptic promises with a grain of salt.  As others have posted, they have a bad reputation of promising the moon (Klingons being their own, fully fleshed out faction etc.) and not delivering.

Kinda wondering the same thing myself ? Other then adding all those supposedly weekly episodes ( what maybe 20 hours worth if lucky ? not all ground combat . )  and the tremendous amount of Klingon content , I must have missed something somewhere . It's still a content light game , that sems to take now less then a month to level in.  You get to spend the rest of the year grinding gear it seems.
