EverQuest Addiction Cited in Child's Death

DjinDjin Member, Newbie CommonPosts: 3,263

Arkansas police say three-year-old Brianna Cordell died sweltering in a closed car while her mother played EverQuest. The 36-year-old Springfield woman - Mary Christina Cordell - was arrested Monday and faces a felony charge of manslaughter. Authorities said Cordell may have been so fixated with the game that she neglected to pay attention to Brianna's whereabouts on Aug. 8 - the day the child died. Brianna was found dead in the front seat of her mother's car in the parking lot of their apartment complex. A Springfield detective said Cordell was believed to have played EverQuest for more than two hours on the day in question - during which she had no knowledge concerning the whereabouts of her daughter. Notes posted under Cordell's name to a computer group called "Spouses Against EverQuest" say her ex-husband's attachment to the game was partly responsible for their divorce and that Cordell felt the game was "addictive." I feel bad for the little kid,  this is crazy,  I believe it's also getting out of hand...

Absolutely, no reason point blank should there be ANY reason on this earth to leave a child unsupervised while you play a GAME.  That my friends is just... un acceptable behavior.  This little 3 year old breathing human DIED because she was playing a GAME.  The kid couldnt even roll down a window..... how pathetic.

That mother should have never had a child.  The mother should never had that game.  I'm getting sick of all this.. immaturity by grown people.  It sickens me.

Perhaps the windows were electric and thus would require a key in the ignition to role down.

Why doesn't DOS ever say "EXCELLENT command or filename!"

Customer: "How fast will my COM ports go?"

    This is my theory...

maybe she was in an urber group getting urber exp when she had to go to the store.....dunno y

she took her child and herself

then when she got back, she rememberred the group, ran inside leaving the baby behind

she gets caught up in the game

    thus the baby dies...

    just a thought

I think it is horrible that some mother would do this.

Adults like her give MMORPG's and their players a bad name.image

So what if she was drinking Pepsi too,  should Pepsi also be blamed for the child's death?  Should her phone company also be to blame?

I understand this is horrible,  but you must also have to remember that she could of been depressed,  on drugs,  etc.  This only stated that she did play for only two hours that day.

It's just like where I work,  everyone thinks Pit Bulls are evil dogs,  they aren't...

It's the mother to blame though. Hundreds of thousands of people play EverQuest and there haven't been many stories resulting in deaths from the game at all, and most of them they aren't even sure it was cause by the game, but when something goes wrong, it's immediatley video games the media and news blames.

I could go kill people and blame it on God...  and say when I went to church I got these feeling to kill...

They would never go for it...  BUT!

If I said I was playing DOOM I for 89235089 hours and I wanted to kill,  John Carmack would be to blame. :)

Its so easy to blame someone else, fact is she basically killed her own kid through neglect and she and only she is the only person responsible. For her or others to blame EQ is just cowardice.

  • killerTwinkiekillerTwinkie Member CommonPosts: 1,694
The mom really didn't blame it on EverQuest.  It's the Media blaming it on the Video Game.  The Media looks up to stir up ANYTHING they can.  If a person hit a cross dresser, the news would make it sound like a gay guy got killed, that's just the way they are.

They also make up stories that aren't true, though sadly this one is not.  I feel sorry for the people that have to be at the shit end of this besides the mother... the mother should have a life sentence in a prison.  She should be teased with EverQuest for life because some people go insane over that Addiction.... Anyway.  The mother should have an extremely SEVERE punishment.

Geez, you'd think that ONLY people who play EQ have ever left children locked in cars.  It happens quite frequently, as sad as that sounds.  Not too long ago, I read an article (it might have been in response to this incident or to one where a grandfather left child in car) where it seems more likely a child will be forgotten in a car when it's "not your turn to watch it" (e.g., a situation out of the ordinary).  It is suggested that you always put something important in the back seat so you will have to look in the back seat to get it (e.g., your purse, grocery bag, etc.).

damn...all I can say is stupid people get what they deserve.  in this case, she lost her child and gets punished by the law because of her own stupidity.  It really amazes me how people can be so god damn stupid.

OMG! ITS A HUMAN BEING! HOW IS THAT NOT IMPORTANT ENOUGH!? image

If people SERIOUSLY cannot remember that they have a child IN THEIR CAR they shouldnt have a CHILD at all, PERIOD. Its beyond words how sad it is to think a parent would leave a child in a car, OR that someone would think that that PERSON would need a REMINDER their child is in the back seat....  HOW STUPID CAN YOU BE. ITS A HUMAN BEING AND YOU NEED A PURSE TO REMIND YOU!?

I'm always disappointed in how quick people are to blame. MMORPGs are getting the same rap from the same critics as D&D did back in its day. Some people CAN get addicted to an MMORPG, I think that's a fact. By the same token, lots of people drink alcohol without becoming alcoholics. I believe there's a psychological component to any addiction, and perhaps moreso when it comes to MMORPGs with the alternate reality they offer. Basically, there was something wrong with the woman already, and if it hadn't been EQ that distracted her from her own child it would have been gambling or alcohol or cocaine or any number of other things. To associate EQ is nothing more than sensationalism.

  • SerienSerien Member CommonPosts: 8,460

    yea...

    i could agree with that
