Why do you think SW:TOR will fail?

CalerxesCalerxes Member UncommonPosts: 1,641

I know many of us have differing levels of what we consider failure but lets leave that aside because there really has been no competition to WOW over the past 7 years and the market really needs one. The reason for this thread is that I'd like to get away from the tit for tat arguing that can ruin many a thread either way. And yes I've jumped on a few people in other threads without thinking it through, sometimes the over excited kid gets the better of my usual adult nature.

So I'd geniunely like to know why do you think SW:TOR will join all the other MMO's of the last few years and have a massive fall off of subs after a few months. Please try to explain you reasoning behind this rather than its "just because it sucks" or "Its not really Star Wars with all those bloody Jedi's running around" .

One thing this is a constructive negative critique thread so please all the supporters of the game please don't start arguments in here as I'm going to do one for us to counterbalance this one, I know it probably seems a be silly but it might stop the circular arguments that we see in other threads and we should get some decent ideas of what players want from an MMO in the 20 teens.

I hope the mods can help me out with these threads to keep them on topic so thanks in advance to the mod team.

It will not fail but it will not be the massive sucess some think/hope either because it has no staying power. What we need is a hybrid. A game with themepark content but enough sandbox features to keep people happy in between expansions and also an alternative endgame to raiding/pvp. It need not be removed but a third and preferably a fourth endgame alternative should be in there as well.

Although I'm loving the game, I feel I'm leveling to quickly.  Like STO and other games, if you can reach level cap too quickly, then I fear the longevity factor is just not there.  Especially when leveling is an integral part of the game.  It's too early to tell for me, but I bet that is one of the factors.

As the game stands now, I don't see a lot of retention value, for a large segment of the non-star wars crowd.  This can be changed, so thats why I say as it stands.  The story is ok, but most of the choices don't offer any different game play.  Light/dark doesn't seem to affect much atm, besides gear.  Most quests are repeats on alts, so I am mashing the spacebar, as I have heard the speel before....Would of been nice if more went into the results of how you played the story, but that is the problem with trying to be a mmo, with a single player rpg approach....I think it leaves the story shallow/unaffective.

A lot of stuff was not put in at release, so the quality and pace of that will determine the short term loses to retention when the free month is over.

Either way, I do not think it will 'fail'....I call having to go f2p a fail, when something is launched as a subscription game.

It will not be f2p in a year imo, as the haters suggest, and it is not going to be bigger than WoW as the lovers sing...WoW is dying some, but not fast enough for that to happen.

It wont. It will have a solid 3-4 mill subs for a long time, IMO.

I think there are couple things I did not like about the game, but those are mostly a personal preference.

However, there is one big thing I have noticed, reported and it still got into launch unfixed!

    That is:

Characters can rotate their chests in 180° degree!!

OK, maybe not a reason for a game to fail, and probably not a game breaking issue either but still...very awful!!!!

Same bait, six months later.  Pass.

Self-pity imprisons us in the walls of our own self-absorption. The whole world shrinks down to the size of our problem, and the more we dwell on it, the smaller we are and the larger the problem seems to grow.

It doesn t need to sell that many, right away to achieve that. As I said "IT WILL" not it does. In game people are loving it, they ll tell people and more will join. The few people whining on these forums amount to next to nothing. As far as whats a long time, well it will build up to that and stay there for a long time.

Why do you need to "keep people in"?

Enough already.  Same answers apply to other thread as well.

Fail for "me" personally rather than in general (as I think SWTOR will be as successful as world of warcraft): there is simply not enough open world pvp.

I will get bored of battlegrounds as they are too predictable and samey in ALL games - not just SWTOR - that have them.

I feel that I can get a good 8-12 months out of this game in terms of existing content and predicted expanded PVE content. I love the story so will get all I can from that.

But I like unpredictable, random open-world pvp; this is the deal-breaker for me.

    Maybe things will improve endgame.

    We'll see.

    Regards

Yeah i agree what a bunch of idiots everyone knows that an MMO can only get as many subs as boxes were sold in thye first weeks didnt you guys learn anything yet didnt WOW show you all how its done?? It came out soild 11 million copys in the first week and never ever again sold any copys its really common knowlege that an MMO can not grow over time what you get at release is the max playerbase......
