Lineage 2 f2p approach is excellent. Unlike other f2p mmo, you need to pay real cash to unlock area, map, item and etc..
But L2 does not, the cash items are mostly luxury . you dont have to buy any things and yet can have full access to the server/game. thumbs up for NCsoft.
Since Aion is from NCsoft, why can't they follow the same approach? sad to see aion failing.....L2 is an older game but still doing better...
ps: i thought this forum got spell check?
Comments
they are,,in europe anyways..in february
They did have a spell checker, I tried to use it a few times but it never worked for me.
To the topic: Aion has not failed, it has actually done and continues to do very well for them. So far, there is no need for it to go F2P.
The whole Lineage 2 is a test run. Well, that's what I'm assuming because there's no other reason why they would do it. They're testing to see if that model of F2P is truly viable in the long term. Right now, it's probably doing okay for them, but I bet it's something they want to track over a long term to get some more conrete stats. If this model does extremely well for them over the next year or so, then I bet my life we'll see them try this again with a different game. If not, then they'll probably stick to the 2-3 tier membership plans you see for most p2p gone f2p games.
Also, Aion has not failed. It has been profitable for both NcSoft east and west. Do they wish it did/was doing better? Probably, but it is by no means a failure of a game. The only reason L2 is currently probably doing better is because of the game's new model and the influx of new players.
Aion will probably go F2P here in the states soon (it's going f2p in Europe next spring if it hasn't already), but I'm betting it'll be with the model they think will make them more money. If they think the L2 way will work then they'll do that. If they think the tiered membership plans will work, then they'll do that instead. They're a business first and foremost so whatever move they make will be in their best interest first.
i think in europe if you subbed to the game before, then you get what they call veteran status which gives you access to everything in the game-no limitations..but you have to opt in to have your account transferred to gameforge..you can do that by logging into your account .but that is for EU account holders only.
L2 is an older game so the time is right to transition that game to f2p. I'm sure in time Aion will also go down this road but not now, way too early for that.
Velika: City of Wheels: Among the mortal races, the humans were the only one that never built cities or great empires; a curse laid upon them by their creator, Gidd, forced them to wander as nomads for twenty centuries...
When you add wings and flying as a core feature to your game, and then barricade your maps with invisible glass walls, you are inviting fail as surely as a cook who tries to roast snowballs.

same as daoc and warhammer, the one that made the first game got moved up or left for another game. The community manage for daoc got moved up as Dev manager for Warhammer and no wonder why it failed lol.
Yes, L2 and AION are from NCSoft, but for those who play or played both knows that each game has a tottaly diferent route.
L2 during 7 years never had a cash shop while was P2P.
AION start right in 1st months (with some magazine that offer dyes). Then the CS was allways bigger while we, players, was waiting for some game updates (promise by NCSoft in 1st month of realese).
The game was incomplete when lunch, and they spend alot of time promoting the cash shop and working for skins for sell.
And so on...
So yes, they are from same company but with tottaly diferent manager.
AION is P2P with a huge influence from cash shop, so i fear the F2P model...
When AION become free (i think is in February) i will give it another try in 3.0, but my hopes are really low
Its a great game, i really hope it gets better as a mmo.
