What makes someone want to hate on a game repeatedly?

Angier2758Angier2758 Member UncommonPosts: 1,026

I'm sure you all know what I'm talking about.  An individual decides they don't like a game so they go into that game's forum and repeatedly post hate/troll loosely presented as a review or opinion piece.

It doesn't go on for a few days... but we're talking weeks of dedicated hatred.

What goes through this person's mind?

  • Are they angry that other people are having fun in a game they don't like?

  • Do they believe they are fighting the good fight by trashing X kind of game so developers try Y?

  • Are they thinking they'll save their current game of choice?

I want to close with an observation also... I see a lot of haters refer to fanboys (I'll be fair and use both terms) as sheep or lemmings... however, a lot of the hate threads have the same group of people posting support of said hate thread...

So is there a magic number of people that support becomes sheep?  If 10 people are smart folks who don't like a game, but there are 100 people who do?  Why exactly are the 100 sheep?  What if it were 50/50?  Just wondering....

I will not play a game with a cash shop ever again. A dev job should be to make the game better not make me pay so it sucks less.

Why do you hate the haters instead of just avoiding them?  The answer might be the answer to your own question.

imageExactly! The flipside of the hating troll is the rabid fanboy. They feed off of each other in some twisted symbiotic relationship. The Haters will keep hating as long as the fanboys keep defending and vice versa. It's a never-ending circle of love and hate. Niether side usually has very many actual facts to back up there arguments either and both speak as if they are the spokesperson for the entire gaming community which they are not. It is however an ever amusing show to watch. image

isn't every topic on this forum a Opinion piece? ive seen too many SWTOR fanboys (which i am assuming you are since you made this post crying about people attacking "your" game). come into a topic that says "SWTOR is bad because ....." and simply write ....

"in your opinion you should say at the beginning".

I don't know maybe im just smart enough to realize that some random forum goer is an expert on the genre so OF COURSE their post is THEIR OPINION, so thus there is no need for "well in my opinion SWTOR is good/bad ....."

    i don't get it i guess

Generally speaking it has zero to do with the above. The main point of it all is to reiterate that we expect more than what we have been getting for our money.

Most 'haters' have been in the MMO scene for many years and are sick of having the same shit but with a slightly different smell being served on their plates and told to like it.

'Haters' will endlessly post to try and make the 'fanbois' see past the Corporate marketing hype and convert them into the so called 'hater' camp, but when in reality the 'haters' have the most love for the genre as a whole and want to see it improved, not just cashed in on which has been the trend of AAA developers since WoW became huge and gained mega bucks.

At the core its not about Themepark vs. Sandbox, Indie vs. AAA or Pirates vs Ninja's, its about quality and the genre moving forward instead of its current stagnant state.

So your the dude hating on the dude playing the dude? It could be because of the sheer irony of watching people ask for features they literally just had in their previous mmo. I just enjoy reading misery threads they are entertaining, especially when you hate a company.

Not sure if you noticed, but some of there poor TOR fans as you paint them sure as hell had no issue invading the Rift forum for the past 8 months. You better believe I am reading every misery thread someone post about that game. I might jump on board as a fan someday, but I get to enjoy this for atleast a month.

Well, I could answer some of this since I have knowledge of the subject.

I will not stand for corruption. I had one job in industry for twenty two years, I've seen this company go from privet ( good ) to corporate ( bad ). I've seen the tricks that corporate has pulled on both workers and the lies they use to sell their product.

Now I work for a local government and can see the nasty stuff they are doing. I will not go into detail, as its REAL bad. I fight this corruption as hard as I can to their face, I do not hide behind a computer.

MMO's.....It may not be corruption, but in some cases their junk. The people are fooled, with either marketing or poorly designed games.  Some are un-intentional, the vision is their but with bad execution.

Two examples of bad execution :

    - Rift...This game appears to be open world as you can go anywhere on the map.  HOWEVER, this game is one big chain quest.  It leads you from one quest hub to another using CHAIN QUEST that you can not avoid.  This makes Rift a pure solo game, with mini games added to give the appearance of team work.  Rifts, dungeon finders, and Warfronts.  When the mini games end you find yourself alone, board, then quit.  No one stays in Rift, most don't know why...Will I just told you.  Rift continues with solid numbers because of constant advertisement, with low prices, I'll give them that.  But the snowball will soon hit the bottom as it's a solo game unless you match quest for quest with someone.

    - SWTOR...Again, Mini games.  Soon to have dungeon finders. Has personal story lines and Voice Acting that keeps players distracted from the population for 5 minutes at a time for 70% of the game.  Some call this an mmo. They will argue the definition of multi-player, but at the end of the day it's a solo game with mini games.  No community. BUT ITS STARWARS !!!!

It may not be all corruption but bad execution and putting out a product such as the two examples are bad too.  So yes I'll fight that !!!!

Well i think that answers at least one query of OP.

    Q. What makes someone want to hate on a game repeatedly?

    A. He hated my game so i am going to hate your game now..lulz!

This is not true! You guys are creating another illusion about reality again. SWTOR is a big disapointment for millions who were expecting a different game. We have the right to criticize and express our feelings wherever we want to, in the way we want. I played the BETA and had to cancel my pre-order because imo the game suck! Can you live with this?

Now you are saying that we are doing this as a vengeance or that we are making this up. You are wrong kid. If you like that second class mmo go ahead and play it. But do not expect people that does not like the game to be silent. Why would I shup up?

But I do ask you. Why are you so concern about the people that thinks SWTOR stinks? The game is a bad joke, we expected a mmorpg that would make a difference and we got this WOW prototype instead, full of bugs, with bad animations, dumb mobs and mediocre combat that dont even have an auto-attack.

Take away the SW IP theme, the voice overs. What you got? A mediocre mmo!  Can you face the truth? No you cant!

I played DCUO BETA as well, I said this at  the time " this game is not worth of $60. This game is going ft2 in 6 months" Guess what? I was right! Same thing with SWTOR, there is no content in that game to keep anyone playing that  pass level 50. People will get tired of the "pew pew" of lightsabers. In time they will migrate to GW2. Can you live with this reality!

Im saving my money for GW2, Blade & Soul and The Secret World. Better games as far we can see, at least with better graphics and better combat animations.

Do you think EA, Bioware or Lucas Arts care about you? They dont. the money they make on Box sales cover for the expenses and make them a GREAT profit. After that, they give a **** if you stay playing or not. They dont need the subs after the box sales. Welcome to the World.

EDIT> Bioware doesn't know how to make an mmo, but they know how to sell boxes. There is where the money is "Box Sales" SOE knows it, EA knows it. They make games to sell boxes then they move on to another popular IP.

Now, stop crying about us. Go play your SWTOR while you have friends to play with. You have 6 months kids, 6 months or  GW2  release whatever comes first.

great, another thread about 'haters'... Exciting :/

'hater'.... what a juvenile spew of a word used to discredit and dismisss another's point of view that disagrees with yours without having to look deeper at the view expressed.

Look, negative opinions are not 'hate'. They usually are valid critical observations. You need to get past simplistic generic labels and treat each individuals view as a unique thing IMO.

I get that it takes more work and is more complicated to do it that way, but honestly you get far better conversations.

I agree, OP, why can't everyone just agree that SWTOR is a flawless masterpiece and the ultimate in gaming.

I am petitioning the Government to close down all other games companies and to call an amnesty so people can hand in copies of their inferior games so they can be publically burnt.

Really, because they made an mmorpg and I am playing it. I have the box, too. The CE one, actually, and it is quite nice, too.

There is constructive criticism, which is rare, and there are "spirited" disagreements.

And then there is just spiteful crap.

I welcome it all in this nasty little world we call the internet.

Too few are willing to do that, I'm afraid.

It is easier to just label people as "wow generation", "console generation", "hater", "fanboi" or just stupid rather than truly understand their wants and needs - viewpoint. If they don't agree with you, they must be one of the above.

I think you're thinking humans too much as rational beings when you ask the question "What makes someone post stupid posts?" Humans do it because they get some kind of satisfaction from doing it, but if you start looking for rational explanation, there's none. It's much like a religion.

People need to defend their own opinion from aggression, so they call other names, that's a natural behavior, that's what you do also in your OP post, when you denigrate the right to some people to say what they want to say, and give them "bad" intention, when they probably don't have negative intentions.

Forum are made for discussion. Discussions are made to share your inner feeling about something. Someone is not negative to be negative, but because they really do feel bad. A games is not pleasing them so they try to discuss what is bad and try to get to some solutions. Throwing flowers to each other and making compliments endlessly is hardly a discussion. People define their surrounding world and try to make it better. Negativity is actually a necessity to make something positive, both goes hand in hand to move along, without that there is no movement.

If it displease you, just don't discuss, and don't go in any forum. You will probably never see in games some people that don't want to play a game, but still play it and grief and spam around silliness because they don't want to play the game. And if you do find some people doing that, they are probably at the border to just stop. You seam to mix, playing a game, with discussing a game. Probably 99% of official games forums need an active subscription to a game to be accessed, so those discussing are in fact playing, or subscribing at least which prove a desire to play.

The problem is not negativity, but when people enter a negative process, and throw at each other negativity and never try and refuse to resolve a problem. This is where the problem can really lead to something bad. But i don't think web forum are about that, not yet, maybe in a decade who knows? Learn to take other people opinion seriously, and you'll be fine.

What complete and utter rubbish. People who spew serial attacks on forums are not crusaders for truth and love. The quality of SWTOR is the highest at launch anyone has put out in years. Some people may not like it but it is well made.

Things that are also well made:

    Modern Warfare 3

    Transformers 3

    Star Wars Prequels

They also share one thing, they are all complete shit.

    Production value =/= quality

Couldn't have said it better myself.  I'd just like to add that at least it might shut some of these so-called 'haters' up, if there were more successful games in this genre, but instead, MMO after MMO just helps drive the point home.  They scrape by with just enough subs to stay in the black, but if you think they weren't hoping to do a whole lot better, you're kidding yourself.

    When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.
