No substitute for a TRUE space aspect but it's a surprisingly fun minigame. More fun than I expected. I like how you still have to navigate carefuly to avoid not bumping your ship into asteroids. It's pretty hectic too: I have to pry my strained fingers of my mouse after a few missions. But yeah ... just a minigame.

Imo, is that it could have been done better, with just a little work (horizontal free flight ala Rogue Squadron) -- and what they have here, could have been used for some 'swoop bike racing' style mini-games (adding 2 mini-games into TOR).
I think the problem is the comparison between SWTOR space flight vs SWG space flight.
To be honest, SWG Space flight was awesome expansion with free roaming + actually it almost felt like another MMORPG game!
However, SWTOR space flight felt like more of a minigame.
They should have implement this better because space action is one of the highlight in Star Wars legacy. I hope in the future expansion, they will add more options or even have an expansion for Space Combat. I don't mind paying extra $$$
they say they are already hard at work on future content releases, one of which is more/better space combat features. dont know how viable it would be to make it more open like jump to light speed.. prob ably wont be as in depth/open as that. but i enjoy it as a side activity.
I'd honestly rather not have it and have them announce that something more free-form would be forthcoming. I'm not much of a fan of the on-rails space minigames.
Hate is too strong a word, but it was the closest choice. For me, it's more that it just seems pointless and lame, but I don't care that much one way or another.. and never really had any expectations about it.
When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.
What do you guys expect for gameplay that was obviously tacked on very late in development? Remember when the game was being showed to people before release and someone asked what was space going to be like? Then a long, awkward silence from BioWare?
"I have only two out of my company and 20 out of some other company. We need support, but it is almost suicide to try to get it here as we are swept by machine gun fire and a constant barrage is on us. I have no one on my left and only a few on my right. I will hold." 'saying', and 'delivering' are two very different things. In my experience, I have seen developers 'say' they are going to do alot, only to see virtually nothing change. I have also seen the fans say 'give them a chance' and 'have faith', and still no results.
So for me, until I see concrete timelines for changes, I really do not think things will change.
Honestly, it seems to be there when you just wanna do something different for a while. I'm cool with that.
For some reason, everyone seems to think that just because this an MMORPG, it needs to be full on Eve/STO/SWG style space gameplay. This fits Star Wars just fine, considering no one went around mining for rocks or flew in space just to "fly in space" in Star Wars.
I do hope for more customizable ships though. I love the look of my BH ship, but I'd like my own, kthnx.

Seems like nothing changes, but then maybe a year or two later, they finally come through. If you're the type to play the same MMO for years, maybe that works out ok, but for most of us, that's way too late to matter. Not their fault though, it's just how long these things take.
What is their fault is giving players things to hope for, without giving a realistic timeframe. They let players believe they're talking weeks or months, even when there's no way in hell they'll be able to do much of anything that soon.

It is a fun mini game that I hope gets fleshed out into a legit endgame.
I sit on a man's back, choking him and making him carry me, and yet assure myself and others that I am very sorry for him and wish to ease his lot by all possible means - except by getting off his back.

It's called depth in gameplay. Things to "hook" players in playing longer.
Everything about SWTOR's space game described before release (PC gamer did a preview of it months back), news leading into release, and the very fact that we have this thread right now, points to something pretty shallow. I wouldn't call SWTOR's space game a "hook" for player retention. It just looks like a feature implemented to say, "Hey! Look! We do have space combat while SWG didn't upon release!" It's blatantly a token feature with no depth at all.

Disappointed, thought you fight real players in space....what you get is some cheap 5$ walmart space game. You cant even freely control your ship and fly in the opposite direction, its no free space at all. Feels like playing old c-64 games where the direction of your flight is controlled by the software and you only can move a bit right or left.
At this point space combat is a suprisingly fun mini game place holder that easily will tide me over to a better mechanic. Now if it is still the same this time next year wel... It would then leave much to be desired. Nice mission variety though and the rails aren't that frustrating.

This! I really don't mind it. That - and Bioware has stated that it's definately something they're going to expand upon.
I dont like it at all, but then i allways loose, which could be a major part of my reasoning.
I didnt like even the idea of the rail shooter, nor did I like after my first flight (I failed heh), then I bought the first upgrades to my ship and tried to start doing the dailies for XP and it's actually very fun for a minigame, a lot better than I thought it could be and especially a lot better than my first impressions about it.
The first upgrades are very cheap and gives you enormous boost to your guns, shields, missiles quantity etc. When under lvl20 you pretty much ding by doing the dailies in around 10 minutes so that's a very good way to skip the most meaningless side quests on the actual game and get the XP from space.
i picked no.3 choice, I mean it's allright when new missions open up since they give a large amount of xp but after that i move on to the ground qusets. They do have plans to expand the space game, we will just have to wait and see.

It's fun, but it's not something I'll do a lot.

Groovy.

Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)

Why didnt they just stucked the original X-Wing / TIe Fighter for space minigame? It would be much more fun and easier to do (i think)
I was surprised how good the space combat ist.
Sure its a minigame, but you can eary exp and medals to upgrade your ship. So its snot meaningless and its a hell of fun !
SWG space combat was plain bad, to much exploitable...here its just cool, when I have half an hour time to play, hey lets do some space dailys !
I just wish they make more space missions.

Currently Playing: SSFIV AE, SFxTekken, SWTOR, WoW. Waiting for: GW2, Resident Evil 6.
fun at 1st
but after like 3-5 games, i got bored and actually haven't been to the space missions anymore
So What Now?
