What would we have missed? You mention one feature that has a placeholder in game, but no actual functionality; there are very, very few armor items that are modifiable, so no, it's not likely at all that you will be updating a peice of armor you found at level 10; and the rest is complete speculation on your part.
Sadly, experience tells me that of all the obvious additional features one can easily imagine MMO developers might want to quickly add to their games, very few fan based dreams ever actually make it into the game, at least not until a major expansion.
All, or at least close to all, of the armor *appearances* are fully modifiable, you just have to get the right version of the item/recipe.
Peace is a lie, there is only passion. Through passion, I gain strength. Through strength, I gain power. Through power, I gain victory. Through victory, my chains are broken. The Force shall free me.
4) Appearance Items? Yup... They've built the ability to use just about any look of armor you want into the game. You can take some armor you found at level 10 and have it be top notch at level 50.
Is this in the game already?
I was trying to find out how to do that in beta.
Orange items can be upscaled with level. You use mods. Mods give the orange items all the stats, so you can take the mods out of 1 item and put them in another. Pretty cool system as you actually are wearing what you look like, and can taylor the items to what stats you want.
At level 25 (before maintenance) my operative had: 2 orange chest-pieces, 2 orange rifles, 1 pair of orange pants, an orange head-piece thingy and an orange belt. Orange gear can't be all that rare if I have nearly a full set of it.
The system that's in now is closer to the original modding system, still not quite as good or as complex, but it does the trick. I'll just keep modding the chest-piece and rifle I like the looks of, and stow the others in cargo for later.
I do miss the unify to chest option terribly though. My Sorc had a really nifty red'n'purple look going on a few months back, and I doubt I could recreate it now - kept the chestpiece for 20 levels to keep the color scheme right, lol. That was back when greens were moddable, the chestpiece was green iirc. Took the stats hit for the stylin' bonus XD

The minor point i'm trying to make is that the game feels complete, with lots of options for expansions. They won't have to completely revamp anything to add what most players complain about.
Many MMO veterans will say the game feels incomplete. Sure, they can add all that stuff later on, but they should build a solid foundation first. I've listed some examples in the past, as well as other people.
Bottom line: The game is incomplete, with missing, and broken important features

Long time MMO player here, and IMO this game is one of the more complete titles to release in the genre for a long time. I see very little to backtrack on, and many areas where they can hit the ground running.
Needless to say I 100% disagree with your bottomline.

In the cantinas there are social venders which will sell you orange gear. My favorite is the Hutt slut-slave outfits for my Chiss gal.
