Lore wise, does armor really do anything?

   It really depends in the tor games it was a almost like a personal shield emmiter you had on yoru characetr that made the armor more durable to blaster or sabers, yet i would think that unless the armor was purely for show it would have an effect. I could see some types of materials that resist, or repell blaster fire as well as saber, or that absorb force abbilities of certain kinds as well.

  I think the Stormtrooper's armor was awesome for absorbing blaster fire :x

  Are lasers that come out the blasters, the same tech or close to the lasers that come out of a saber?
