Why can't i play/login

Firstly i have an older account that took the free trial a long time ago and i recenlty added to that account a key for entering the open beta. I tried to login but the launcher told me there was an issue with my account. I followed the link and it asked me to purchase the client.
Then i created a new account and also tried to play but i got the same message.
Isn't the first levels of the game free? And where can i download the open beta client?

I'm not aware of an open-beta going on at STO currently. The subscriber-only game will open to the public as free-to-play (F2P) in January 2012. Where did you find your key and did you submit it at the site below? Did you receive an email confirmation that the key was accepted?

Note: If you have an old account from STO's 2010 open beta testing, it will still say under "Activated Features" that you have "Star Trek Online Open beta access". Since that phase ended January 2010, it doesn't grant you access to anything. Strangely though, STO still has at least one page up from beta.

The game is not currently F2P as of yet. I believe it will be as of Jan 17th though. Open beta for this game ended nearly two years ago, so I don't think that key would gain you anything. The only testing going on for the game is available on a test shard for paying customers. Just wait till Jan 17th to begin playing again.
