    Which means what?
Do you expect a world to shape - in that case go GoG.com and buy Populous 2 or look in the internet for Minecraft which is a new and very successfull Indie game.
Do you expect a virtual world - then Skyrim could be for you or for the experience of soemthing from the past the best open world rpg so far Ultima VII which is also available on GoG.com now.
Do you like transportation - look for Open Transport Tycoon.

What does Sandbox mean to you?

"Torquemada... do not implore him for compassion. Torquemada... do not beg him for forgiveness. Torquemada... do not ask him for mercy. Let's face it, you can't Torquemada anything!"

    For MMORPGs:

    1. Darkfall Online - Fantasy

    2. Eve Online - Scifi

    For SPRPGs:

    1. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - Fantasy

    2. X3: Terran Conflict - Scifi

    For SP Action games:

    1. Just Cause 2

    2. Grand Theft Auto IV

    3. Saints Row 2

Just a few I can think of off the top of my head.

    I'll add a few more.

    MMORPGs:

    1. Ultima Online (Not as much as it once was... but still is very sandbox)

    2. Ryzom (Low population... but F2P)

    3. Istaria (Low population... but F2P)

    SP games:

    1. Minecraft

    2. Terraria

    3. Mount and Blade (I would heavily recommend Warband over Fire and Sword though)

Imho for mmorpg only real choice right now is EVE Online, but that's very specific game as you're basically flying a spaceship (well of course this is trivalization as this game is much more and is very interesting and complex).

For other sandbox mmorpg's. Sadly they are either Gankfests (Darkfall, MO) or very old / flawed.

For single player RPG - latest one - Skyrim.

Upcoming mmorpg - only PARTIALLY sandboxisch but ArcheAge will have SOME sandbox elements. Still it's at least 1 year till it will release in west. (no date or publisher atm).

For single player I would go with Skyrim.

If your feeling hardcore for MMO I'd go with Mortal Online.

If your looking for something a bit more handholdy, but still sandboxy I'd go with Fallen Earth.

Never trust a screenshot or a youtube video without a version stamp!

I would highly reccomend mount and blade:warband also. Its got some great mods across a variety of settings.
