How do you pick your MMO Character/Avatar?

QuesaQuesa Member UncommonPosts: 1,432

After a few months into an MMO, you decide to make a new character.

What is it that pushes you to your choice more?

After years of playing MMO's, I've come to realize I enjoy them more if I'm pleased with the spell/ability animations over anything else.

Usually like to play something I'm familiar with. Usually results in me being human, unless they are rather buff, in which case I will choose an elf or something skinny and not too wild looking.

    Make it so...

Yeah, used to do the same thing.  After a while of playing WoW, I found a few race/sex combinations that had really nice spell animations.  Female Undead/Human for the most part.

    LOL @ the second choice.

Anyway, I generally play humans simply due to the fact that in most games, they have some advantageous racial stats, or at the very least, aren't at a disadvantage in some areas like other races are.  And, being a male, I only play males.  Playing a female toon to me is like playing with Barbie dolls as boy...it's just not natural.  And any guy that says they just do it so they have something to look at is a sad individual.  If you want something good to look at, log off of the game and log onto a porn site.

I always choose the Human race, want to have my own version of character in game,, sounds funny but it helps me to be good on it.

I usually sit a while in the character gen until something comes to me, it can really be anything. As I play a while the character kinda gets his own personality as well.

Just toying with the options usually gets me going for the right char.

As for class, I prefer sneaky and really flashy classes. Thieves, rangers, swashbucklers and similar classes but again, it can be anything except pure healers, I just don't like being that defensive.

But my EQ2 main is a dirge (bard), a buffing class and that actually works fine.

The names either comes to me or I browse out a fitting name, usually a old norse or gaelic name unless it is against the setting or the character race.

Well since the poll is aimed at after you've played a game for awhile and are making another character..

I always try to pick the least used options.

One of the choices you didn't really have(like what was sort of said above) is "Whatever character is more popular with Groups". I nearly always go with a DPS character, but of course Tanks and Healers always have a spot in groups while DPS characters are generally much too common. Since Healers are always in demand I could start the game with one, but I usually prefer my main to be a DPS and I like to learn the game before I create an alt for this reason.

Talking about this stuff really has me missing Ultima Online. My main started as a Blacksmith/Miner, and over the years became a swordsman, and finally ended up a Mage/Tamer. I had to sort of start from scratch each time but it never really felt like I did because I could juggle so many skills at once. It's truly bizarre that the level system became more popular than the independent skill system.

It really wasn't mean to discuss your avatar "role" but how and why you choose your character.

    No option applied, didn't vote.

I prefer to customize an avatar based on the roleplay function I have in mind for it.  Match looks to personality.

    Race and Lore.

Whatever interests me most. The right race adds just that little bit of RP flavour to enhance the experience.

I won't play an elf. That's about as restrictive as my character creation gets. My main is usually male, but I play females as well.

The first char I create usually try to make it look like me in a way (tough I haven't found a game that lets me create a fat character, though), alts are usually created going for a wacky look, and usually trying to pick up options that are most likely to be the least used (like a balding hairstyle and the like).

Seven of the options could have been narrowed down to one: What my avatar looks like.

Generally choose a class and then a race that I think fits best. For example I choose a warrior, I usually will choose a male that is very muscular looking (not a Elf mostly), typically I like beastly not human. For a assassin or similar, I like to choose a mysterious slim race, a warlock type class I usually choose a dwarf...lol I don't know why for that one, but yeah. I then try to make a good looking person for most characters.

I play whatever i think fits my class choice, background, aesthetic taste the most.
This ranges from Trolls, to Orks, to Humans, to Dwarfs, to even spiderlike creatures.
The Gender i chose is an aesthetic decision and also classbased, some classes have a male, some a female preference but sometimes its fun to break the preference and make the oposite.
I would never play a hobbit and crap like hobbits, i want all hobbits dead - they be no truthfull midget race!
The look is very urgent, cant play a game when i cant stand the look of my avatar.
For example i would only play male Dwarfs in Lotro and only females in AoC bcs of the look, while i absolutely like Trolls in Daoc.
I voted Race and Lore bcs it fits the best - Aesthetics can be added to that.

Me, I'm a bit weird I guess. I simply make my toons as like me as possible. I do change some things based on what class or playstyle I'm choosing. But for the most part I simply make me.

    Race and lore.

And specially when its a race thats unique, like in Ac2-tumerok or Darkfall- Mahirim i go for.

Im not intrested in race or character that reflects my real life or that seems have best stats/spells or traits.

Most of time ichoose character you have play and look at for longtime so i choose carefully one i realy feel i like alot.

I usually try to make the character look as close to myself as possible, except usually taller (I'm only 5'8" :( ): Standard bald-ish, white human male, with a decent build and usually a goatee or scruffy/semi beard facial hair.

I prefer female character to take advantage with male players. need some free items..

  • johanan12johanan12 Member Posts: 49

Well since you didn't put Skill Damage abilities.. I'll go with Race and lore, why? because every race has their special ability and i always look onto the best class with the best ability that i can use in my future gaming.

It's even creepier how many male avatars will approach a female in order to "assist".
