Game video's are boring ....

I dont understand all those people that base their opinions about a games combat feeling solely on videos made by others. Even official gameplay videos in general cant capture the excitement that a player feels when playing the game himself.

Who else does agree that game video's are highly overrated?

Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)

agree and this is exactly why I was dissappointed w Starcraft 2, too many movies

In my case, I tend to find the game videos more exciting than the actual game. I see the video and think "That looks cool" then I try it and I find out the controls dont feel right or the quests are actually boring etc etc.

Agreed thats why I categorize them into 3:

    I. CGI or as I call damn "what I could be" movies. Having nothing to do with the game just well made and oustanding.

II. pre rendered PR movies. Often some PR guy hidding as a dev is talking about the game things you usually won't see are:

    -- UI

    -- non rendered ingame scenes

    -- ingame footage

    -- game options

III. videos made by players. These are the ones I'm judging before getting a chance to play the game. Aion looked incredible from get go. GW 2 in terms of videos looks way to fast paced (guess thats to be expected since they are aiming at the Halo/CoD crowd) and TOR oh well th is thing is looking like it doesn't have even a moderate AI or combat system, from what I've seen people are just firing at each other not using any special abilities such as mezz, stun, DoT, buff or debuff AND mobs just don't run away they are low on helath but still don't run.

We need a MMORPG Cataclysm asap, finish the dark age of MMORPGS now!

"Everything you're bitching about is wrong. People don't have the time to invest in corpse runs, impossible zones, or long winded quests. Sometimes, they just want to pop on and play."
"Then maybe MMORPGs aren't for you."

I couldn't agree more. I am very often speaking with friends about this. There used to be some magic playing games, immersion, artistic worl in the narration, setting, themes. I don't get today's game. They are blockbuster, they sell a lot but they are dull and for the masses. I can't even find a game with a powerful atmosphere anymore. They much technical prowes, too much ''formula'', not enough passion and creativity.

You have to put it in perspective, basing your entire opinion of a game on a vid is just silly.

Normally I first read up about a game, then check videos. If I still are interested after that I try it (usually in the open beta, unless I feel to help testing it in the CB) and if I still like what I seen I pre order it.

But it takes me 1-3 months after I bought it before I could give out any score myself that would be close to right.

For me vids are just step 2 in seeing if a game is worth buying or not. They do show the graphics and a little of the game but it is the beta testing that are the important stage to me, reading up on a game and watching someone else play it only helps me narrowing down what games I should bother to beta or not.

It is not about the money, but I tend to waste pretty long time in a game without having fun if I bought it and doesn't really like it. And I really don't have any more time to be bored.

If I don't like the game mechanics in the video's then there is a 90% chance I will not bother buying the game.  I'm not going to waste my time and money into a game that has bad / boring game mechanics & animations.

I find the exact opposite to be true. In all cases, the gameplay videos have given me a near perfect understanding of how the game will feel and play. I think what you're missing is information on what they're actually doing.

Try it this way: Go read up a bit on how combat works in a given MMO. People who complain make for the best reads, since they will give a dirty, blunt view of how the game works and what could be better. Don't bother with reviews; they're either paid, don't go into enough detail, or just say nothing in particular in the case of MMORPG.com and some other bad review sites.

After doing some information hunting and armed with the basics of how MMO games work, the videos will put into context everything you've read.

    Sarcasm is not a crime!
