ANET- Take All the Time You Need, We Can Wait!

Rawrg22Rawrg22 Member Posts: 12

Too many games have been ruined by premature releases of late.  I've played quite a few MMO's over the past 5 years, but every one of them has been a disappointment due to their lack of polish.  Tabula Rasa, Warhammer Online, Age of Conan and  FFXIV all suffered from being released about six months to a year too early, most likely due to bean counters pushing for the subcription revenue to start flowing.  I didn't include Aion, because that was mostly ruined by NCSoft's absolute refusal to control botting and farmers.

Basically, a game like this takes a long time to develop.  Love it or hate it, WoW is the benchmark now, and anything that comes out that isn't close to that level of polish, performance, vastness and overall fun, isn't worth playing.  Also, a game with a tiny community of half-hearted players is equally not worth playing, and that's what you get when you release a turd.  If this game takes until 2015 to come out, but is great when it does come out, to me that's better than it coming out tomorrow and sucking.  Every one of the games I listed above had GREAT potential to be a fantastic game, and if they were given another year of development time, everything other than FFXIV might have had great success (FFXIV is broken on so many fundamental levels that a near scrapping of everything is needed to fix it.)

Still, it is pretty clear that an MMO's launch and early days basically define it's future.

AoC is a beautifully made game - playing it now, one has to wonder why it has achieved the status of "dead" in the eyes of most of the MMO community. Then the stories of the launch days are heard and those are frightful.

I really hear you OP -- I would love Anet to take their time... even though if that may be painful for me :P

I totally agree with OP- while GW2 is the MMO I'm watching with the closest release I'd gladly wait a bit longer than scheduled to play in a more polished game. On top of that, with so many AAA games going "freemium" I have plenty of opportunities to kill time before it's released.

There are tons of great games coming out all the time. The wait is always easy.

There is only so much time they can take before banks and investors start pushing harder then even Anet can hold...

Its not whining customers that make a game release early..... its people that bet their money on the project.

Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)

Totally.  That said, hopefully ANet can make them understand that if they hit a home run with this, they'll stand to make so much more with an active cash shop and multiple expansions.  So far, I'm really impressed with what I've seen from them.

Anet really doesn't need to be told this guys. This is also less of an issue with Anet than you might think. This is for much the same reason Blizzard can take as long as it does with it's games. Anet has saved quite a large amount of it's revenue from GW1 to help fund GW2. I'm sure they have investors, but the bulk of the game is coming out of their own pockets.

It's for this reason that they are actually able to take their time to release the game 'when it's ready', instead of just using that as a buzz phrase to generate public support. Furthermore, realize that the playable demo they already have is pretty damn polished. There's definitely still stuff they could work on, but they could release it in a few months and it would still be enjoyable. The fact that they aren't just makes it that much better. From what I've seen it looks like they are mostly just polishing really minor stuff (much of which could also be fixed retroactively in a patch if they had to).

what ArenaNet needs and have is one owner there agree with them on the projekt of "making the best game possible, taking the time it needs". They are quite lucky to be in that situation, and so are we!

Tottaly agreed, especially when SC2 is there :)

If it's not finished and polished and ready, by all means, I hope they take their time and hold off on releasing it until it is.

My pet conspiracy theory, however, is that investors sink money into multiple, competing MMOs, then meddle with release dates to prevent their older investments from tanking as quickly as they otherwise would.  The sad fact is, that during this MMO dry spell when nothing really catches my interest for long, I've spent more money on MMOs than I ever would have if I had just one that I was playing all year.  I hate that.  It really pisses me off and I'm a couple of MMO failures away from quitting the genre entirely.  I wonder how many others find themselves spending too much for too little enjoyment this year?  All these games going freemium and at the same time releasing expansion after expansion (that costs sometimes as much or more than 3 months of a premium membership), and no new AAA MMOs until December has soured me thoroughly on the entire MMO industry.

It's a pet conspiracy theory (as in I don't believe it, I merely speculate about it) because I have zero evidence to support it, and it may be utter crap, but I would love to know if, for example, ToR has a major investor that also dropped money into Rift.  I actually went so far as to google it and got nowhere.  That info isn't as easy to get as info on who makes the games.  But if I found out that the two largest chunks of change for both games came from the pockets of the same investment company, I'd start to wonder.

They will do it as they did is with the content presentations. So I guess when it is as close as ready to release that they can come up with a release date once they have made up a release plan. So I guess they don't have a plan on that so far. I mean you need some time to get the game into the boxes and a few weeks more for people to buy/preorder the game.
