I'd love a realistic mmorpg, but the idea you offered doesn't sound realistic really. First off, if the world is ravaged in nuclear war to the point where the entire world is a waste land basically, then you're neglecting several important things that'd effect the world.

To begin with, you'd have a lack of skilled labor, professionals, organization, structure, and leadership. This has an effect on many things. You're talking about a world where chaos reigns, so who exactly is growing and storing the food? Who is creating weapons, armor, vehicles, money, and housing among other things? Who is listening to who, and why should they?

The fact is that most people who'd survive would soon die from disease, lack of food, and clean water. There'd be a lack of, if not a non-existence of, people who even know how to create the things you're assuming exist after the nuclear war.

What about the majority of people who want to live in peace, like the majority of people in our world want right now. It's not instinctual, as you say, to want to conquer others. Most people want peace and want to be left alone, yet you have unrealistic expectations of having a world that's in constant conflict.

you show me one game that has realistic combat or a realistic RPG and then i can agree that it can be done in MMO's but as far as i am concerned MMO's will always lag behing other markets for innovation and realism.

    MMO wish list:

    -Changeable worlds
    -Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads

Well, you can't get TOO realistic, that is for certain.  I wouldn't mind seeing, however, seeing a more realistic leaning MMO.

For example, how about an MMO with semi-realistic swordplay?  IRL, two swordsmen battling it out would consist of a series of dodges, parry's, and glancing blows off of armour.  Maybe a slight wound, but otherwise no hit-points, because the loser is finished off with 1 thrust or sweep of the blade.   Skills would be based around maybe a focus and stamina bars.

The battle would consist of an intricate system of skills, maneuvours, and strategy designed to balance offense and defensive and get you to that final finishing move.  In my mind, no more unrealistic than the current system whacking away at the health bar, while still being able to fight at full capacity till the very end.

This might have been true ten or fifteen years ago. But the original mmo player base have all grown up and now have kids of their own. They aren't paying for their kids to play, they're paying for themselves to play, and they're totally WoWed out. Anything that looks or plays like WoW makes us want to hurl.

That's excellent!  Although if you're talking main-stream MMO more than a few will die this way.

You have hundred's of brilliant companies, with crazy potential.

I'm tired of fairies, cartoons, dragons, spell timers, imbalance, all that stuff is officially outdated.

What I think a lot of people want to see is some intense, real time, realistic, blatant action.

Honestly, when was the last time you played a game and your hand started shaking from it being so intense in that moment?

So why don't we as a community, think outside the box. New ideas anyone?

I got an idea for an MMORPG, and it's been in my head awhile.

    1. Near Future (Within the next 20 years)

    2. Economic collapse, depreciation of money, trade instability. Sound familiar?

    3. Nuclear insecurities lead to increased world wide dispute, threats begin.

    4. The use of Nuclear weapons occur along with the fallout.

(Jump into the future a couple years after the fallout)

What do you got after a nuclear fallout? Zing!

    1. Shattered, wasteland's of cities. (Perfect... for any kind of combat)

    2. New forms of leadership. (This is your alliance)

    3. An instinct to survive & conquer. (Thus, the point of PvP)

    4. World/Area Wide PvP (No, instances, no stupid battlegrounds, JUST open-real time warfare)

    5. Real Weapons, slightly modified with new technology. (With Reloading, Overheating, Jams, No REUSE timers)

    6. Real Vehicles/Aircraft (If your alliance or you can afford it)

    7. Real Industry (If you conquer enemies, you can acquire resources right?)

With resources, this leads to your how you say trade-skills.

    - Engineering

    - Weapon Specialists

    - Mechanics

    - Biotechnology

    - Demolition

    Endless number of secondary professions.

    NEXT, Classes/Races.

Race: Human's Only, were diverse enough.

Classes: Split Professions at the beginning, and always having the possibility to become good at anything else you want

to do while playing the game. If your a recon sniper/weapon specialists and you suddenly got an urge to blow stuff up, you

could invest your time into Demolition, while keeping your same skills.

    Think Progressive, nonstop action, 24/7.

BUT, it wouldn't be like EVE, where people with 56,000,000 SP will destroy you no matter what, or like in WoW where a level 80 will rock your level 60 character. This is a real time game, if you shoot someone with a pistol in the face, they most likely will die, if you run in front of a tank and he opens fire, well then your an idiot, and you died for a reason!

With that being said, think opportunity, the combination of tactics and skills overtime, to make the ultimate soldiers for elite open PvP and professional warfare.

Global Agenda had an okay idea, but nowhere near like this. The hell with instances, the real fun is never knowing when your about to get shot in the back.

Anyways, this is something I want to see. Give Ventrilo a reason again, and make the games intense. None of this fairy world crap that keeps getting released.

    Peace

Here's a tip, wait a decade or so , you'll be in the future, hope the world will be apocalyptic and join the army. There you have your MMO. Only difference is that when you die you'll truly die. But you'll have your realism.

Tbh i'm not interested in insane realism in games. While i do appreciate a certain level of it it must remain enjoyable. As an example i like shooters with a certain degree of realism but i truly don't like ARMA because they pushed it too far to my opinion. What you propose is to my opinion an MMO with realism so high that it would simply bore the shit out of me.

Well at least that's how you initially present it. But i would like to point out most proposals except the combat mechanics (and even those) seem dodgy realistically wise. Industry for instance would be HELL if done realistically.

Have you tried Xsyon. It seems like you might really enjoy that game.

Yes...But it wont be profitable because it will have high lethality and the masses aka noobs will ragequit because they wont be able to get a kill or it will be like mw2 where anyone can get some kills because of one shotting

One thing I would consider is the removal of levels , your character should age  not level . they should start out at age 5 " wouldnt work starting out at Birth"  & everyone would age at the same rate  but you strength would come for  learned abilitys  so the more you quest - train skill- expolre - craft  ect ect the more powerful you become ..

When will these stupid shooter-fans finally suck it and stop claiming their actually extremely old gaming variant would be anything "new" ?

  • sfly2000sfly2000 Member Posts: 168

I think "realistic" might be the wrong word here.

As a D&D player I prefer it to be "realistic" in the sense of D&D and fantasy as I interpret it.

Something like D&D or Tolkiens world....and yes...no more feries and other clown creatures.

I think the main problem is the "mainstreamization" of all theese games and those sole aim at the bulk of the game buyers....well....kids....

All I can say is I am still playing Neverwinter Nights 1 and still waiting for something better to be released...

In the mean time I will start building my own persistent world for the game...

sounds like fallen earth .. too bad fallen earth is just terrible. or Xyson to bad thats also terrible.

so maybe the title should be a GOOD realistic MMORPG - can it be done.

I played FE on release and actually thought it was pretty good.  I heard about crashes and bugs but maybe I was lucky, I didn't have any problems at all.  I thought it was definately one of the smoothest releases of any MMO I had played.

I subbed for awhile, but I admit I kinda like the fantasy setting better.  Still check it out every once in a while though.

Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it is bad.

I am the kind of gamer who would rather lay awake at night, then suddenly realize that there was an answer to the problem.  I don't need or want an adreneline rush from my games.  I want clever writing, interesting situations, and a compelling cerebral experience.  I don't need to click 47.2 million clicks per second, because I'll always lose to the kid who clicks 47.3 million clicks per second.  But, I feel I can 'imagine' as well as anyone.

I want to see beauty, in graphics, in concept or in code.  I want something to immerse myself in.  I want something to make me say 'Whoa!  That was neat!'  I would rather wonder 'how'd they do that?' rather than 'how'd I die?'  I want to stare over a strange jungle and think I see a lost ruin gleaming in the fading light/.  Then I want to see what it was.  I enjoy the stimulation of my imagination.  Give me a game that presents me with decisions that I have to tackle with my brain, rather than rely on aging reflexes, variable network conditions and my woefully outdated PC.

If you're wanting bleeding-knuckle, eye-searing action at a breakneck speed, may I suggest that you might be really looking for games that are classified as First Person Shooter rather than Role Playing.

Logic, my dear, merely enables one to be wrong with great authority.

  • To each their own, but if I wanted realistic, I'd step outside.  Perhaps I'm in the minority, but I like those darn elves and dwarves and pixies and shit.  I also liked SWG's futuristic setting.  I'm open to just about anything that isn't realistic.  :)
