They've had some attempts, some better and some worse attempts. If Arch Age delivers it may be a big competition.

... Where have you been? Under a rock or are you just completely prejudice? Aion is a huge game in Asia.  City of Heroes was HUGE for a long time.  And, I mean seriously, those aren't even as strong as Guild Wars....

Don't mean squat if someone bought a copyright on the name. But I can't see any legal documentation from GW saying they did, I just went and looked. Not even in Codex: Eldar.

Still, wouldn't hurt to change the name up a little.

I would be less worried about that and more worried about the first quote of the 2nd paragraph.

"By listening to the players and by remembering to make the game they want to play". See I agree about listening to the community ,but to a certain extent. you cant cater to EVERY player that mite play your game...thats why games usually have options and other means to maybe make a game more appealing to different types of gamers.

I dont know, I normally wouldnt touch ANYTHING with NCsofts name on it.. but this actually seems pretty cool.  I hope I can get into a beta or something, or they have an early trial.. I refuse to buy a Ncsoft published game without  trying it first..

Cant wait to see this one developing though.. really interested in the settler or scientist

I'm fed up of looking at cartoon looking characters in games so I'll not even bother opening any more post about this game. These developers need to start using the full potential of our PC's and stop pissing about with shit looking characters lets see some more depth and looks in the pixels and take advantage of my over priced twin graphic cards.

As for making a world there are plenty of games out there of which to take the best bits from and then create a massive sandbox and story driven game world which if done correctly could have a massive implication of the way MMO's are developed in the future.

The problem we have in this industry is that every developer stays in the safe and sound lane and do not step out side the norm! It's all been done before and while I understand that the investment has to yield a return for the company, however until someone stretches the MMO envelope these games will all be the same to some degree and the shelf life will be like many others give or take a few years. The word I'm looking for is BORING!

Ssshhh man, don't you know it's forbidden to complain about graphics on a mmo? People will call you a graphicswhore and say that gameplay is the only thing that matters. And that they would play a good game even if it had the crapiest of graphics but in truth, they won't.

Unfortunatley these art styles are more popular than you think these days...look at ALL the games coming out now. Borderlands (cell shading), Torchlight 1&2, and plenty of other games you could think of . I can hear what your saying though too, when my buddy first showed me Borderlands I was not intrested at all because of the art style, but I watched a few videos...lol and he decided to get it for me as a X-mas present...and now I love the game and the art style...wierd huh?

All in all It would be nice to see an MMO thats more on the realizm side graphic/character wise...AoC.....

Game looks kind of cool, then I saw the playable Playboy bunnies,  I'll pass...

Wildstar should have cartoonish graphics as it is evident that their trailer is reminiscent of the old Don Bluth animated films and 80s games like Dragons Lair. The game is meant to be serious yet whimsical at the same time. I can understand people not wanting cartoon graphics in major IPs such as Star Wars, Star Trek, Lord of the Rings, or even Fallout if they ever make a MMO out of it. I like hard core graphics games and would like to see Fantasy MMOs with graphics like Skyrim. However, I can't see why people would complain that the style is cartoonish. Its like saying a Hello Kitty MMO isn't real enough.

honestly the game sounds interesting but the character design....emmm  i barely can handle swtor graphics/art style and this  looks even worse...by far...may sound  silly  but  some incluiding me may be the cause we stay away from the game

I think Wildstar will make a good casuall MMO when you just want to kill a bit of time. I still play City of Heroes off and on when I got an hour or so to spare but nothing serious. Serious MMO players will likely gravitate towards Guild Wars 2, SWTOR, and maybe even Titan if that turns out to be decent. Personally, I wish the Star Wars game had gone with a high degree of realism in the characters and creatures but I suppose thats a topic for another thread.

Good god I'm so sick of hearing this marketing garbage... This is just more Marketing PR Crap that we have heard for the last 7 years. Every game company that makes MMO's says that they all listen to their players. Just because they listen to their players and what they want also dosn't mean its going to be the second comming of jesus.  Anyone who believes this crap has got to be pretty nieve given the track record of crap MMO's that have been released in the last 8 years, and who cares if their team worked on EQ2, WoW, and Warhammer, all those games are simplified themepark crap.

Sorry if I sound so pesimistic it just makes me ill when I hear developers coming out and saying... HEY LOOOK OUT MMO IS GOING TO BE THE SECOND COMING OF JESUS.. when in reality it's just copied or another rehash of something thats already been done 100000 times since 1999

Even with only three weeks of "coming out" Carbine have already had their potential players design and name a boss mob. They are certainly delivering (so far) on the listening to players - they also keep an eye on fansites (several post to, and read the forums at WildStar Central).

Carbine made a deliberate choice with the graphics so that the game is instantly recogniseable - much like Team Fortress 2 is.

The depth being talked about is the layers in the combat system. Dodge an attack, and the mob becomes vulnerable. Kill two mobs at one, get a double-kill bonus. Kill a mob quickly, and get a challenge to do it faster. Do each of these things and you get an XP bonus. It has more depth than a regular MMO's kill a mob, get fixed XP. And that's just basic combat - before you add Paths/Quests/Lore on top of it.

You have to remember that Carbine Studios have been in Stealth mode for years - a lot of the phrasing they'll be using is from their internal discussions. They'll need a month or two to get the public lingo back in practice - by depth, they may well just mean layered.

the word "deepest" is verrrry subjective. Deepest in gameplay mechanics? maybe..deepest in story and lore? ..i doubt it. Still looking forward to this game. Just wishing it would be b2p

Looking forward to EQL and EQN.

Sorry that has absolutely nothing to do with depth, it is just a modified combat system.  I would highly recommend you look up the definition of depth before inventing your own.

I've been checking in on Carbine Studios since a little bit after their formation, waiting for them to unveil their MMO. I am wary of this game. I feel as though it will be catered too much for audiences <14

    It's in alpha stage....

When FE was in Alpha, they still had seasons with snow covers showing up during winter etc. Games change so much at any point during development. Heck, AOC even had stuff promised on the boxes during release, that wasn't implemented until a year later.

I lost my trust in those companies and their empty promises. I believe only what I can play.

Let's play Fallen Earth (blind, 300 episodes)

Let's play Guild Wars 2 (blind, 45 episodes)

But...but...Carbine Studios has "heavy hitter" developers!

    Hmmm, so did Vanguard.

    So did Tabula Rasa.

    So did Hellgate: London.

    lol

    People never learn.

-Letting Derek Smart work on your game is like letting Osama bin Laden work in the White House. Something will burn.-

That reminds me of a saying I've heard once. It's not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog. I don't see much fight to Wildstar. Nice art style, but I'm looking for something that will keep me playing more than a month if it's going to be subscription based. Otherwise, I could play this year's RPGs and FPSes coming up before and just after Christmas for quite some time (I already own Dead Island and I'm playing hell out of it).
