Whats up MMORPG.com, Zach Sharpes here for a quick First Impressions video, but first let me lay the foundation down for yeah. Minecraft, the Cooperative Online RPG (Guild Wars can be catagorized in the same genre), had its 1.8 patch leaked this week and with that, it went viral. Hundreds if not thousands downloaded it and got into the pre release where bugs are smoothed out and features are slowly implimented if not already in the game.
"Minecraft is a game about placing blocks to build anything you can imagine. At night monsters come out, make sure to build shelter before that happens." -Minecraft.net Game Description
My First Impressions of the game and the 1.8 patch: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PMLo5Mh0ruU
Features that have been discovered in the patch so far:
- Biomes are MUCH larger and uniform than before
-Swamp biome was added to the list of existing biomes - look for vines on trees!
- Vines
Can be collected with shears, in the manner of leaf blocks. Vines will grow on any surface they are placed on
- Strongholds - spawn once per world
- Ruins (basically strongholds on the ground)
- Giant mushrooms (Do not generate yet)
- Silverfish
- Creative mode
Allows flying, insta-break, unlimited items from an item palette, no damage, and more
- Abandoned mine shafts
- Endermen
Normally passive, these night-spawning mobs will teleport to (and attack) you if you look directly at them. When defeated, they can drop Ender Pearls, which presently do nothing
- Bow charging
Variable damage with charge, can also land critical hits. Additionally, attacks can crit if you hit a player or mob when descending from a jump
- Sprinting
Run faster, knock mobs back that are hit during a sprint - appears to deplete the hunger bar faster
- New high-quality Main Menu
- Chest animation (lids open, close)
- Player list on SMP; Server listings
- Setting gamemode on SMP "/gamemode username 0/1", 1 being Creative and 0 being Survival
- Hunger
Depletes slowly over time, can be filled by eating food. At 9 more more bars, you will regenerate health slowly.
- Eating animation
- Arrows stick to mobs
- Xp bar (Gain xp from killing mobs and other players)
- New lighting engine (Colored lights, smoother lighting)
- Clouds are now at the ceiling of the world
- Cave spiders
- Zombies drop rotten flesh, which can be consumed
- Watermelons (as well as watermelon and pumpkin seeds)
- Glass panes
These can be crafted at a crafting table by making a 3x2 grid of Glass Blocks - makes 16 panes. These panes can be placed in lines, corners and crosses, and they will adjoin with the nearest adjacent block.
- Iron Bars
Created by making a 3x2 grid of iron ingots at a crafting table. Can be placed in the same manner as glass panes
- Brick, Stone Brick stairs
- Smooth stone brick
Can be crafted by placing Stone in a 2x2 grid, makes 4 Stone Bricks
- F6 & F7 Adjust the time of day when pressed/held
Question of the video: Have you played Minecraft? If so are you excited for the official release of this patch? Or have you already gotten your hands on it like my self?

I never saw the point or attraction to this game. I don't even know why anyone would want to play this for more than a few minutes then delete it off thier HD's.
My version says 1.9.2 but it can't connect online and says 1.7.3 when it's in the game. Been like that for a couple months. It's a good game for about a week. But really it's endless fun if you like creating towns, statues or whatever else you want etc. You can even flood the world with lava although it makes it crash! Lol.
This isn't a signature, you just think it is.
I played with lego's when i was a child, and sometimes will still play with them when my nephew comes to visit, that is way more interesting than this game is though.
To "win" the game is to get a full set of diamond if you want to play with a purpose. But you can make music and set up mine carts and make water traps where monsters die and items endlessly come out. You just pretty much set your own goals. It's the point of the game. Do what you want, where you want and how you want it. It really is a sandbox. We all knew xp was coming and there are some skill servers out there already so that could be catered to the "have a purpose" crowd.

I don't know why I like it to be honest. It's different thats for sure. I didn't like the demo, but the more I saw Simon and Lewis play it the more curious I got. To make a long story short, bought it and love it. I don't know why. My best friend asked me the same thing, "Why do you like it? It looks stupid". Same thing again, you just have to play it and see. I don't know why I like it but I do very much.
"Life is 10% of what happens to you and 90% of how you react to it."
You dont see the point?
Its a full sandbox single or multi player fantasy game. Yes the graphics are dated (on purpose) but its game play is so unique and free that it really blows most MMO's out of the water. What other game can you and your friends start out online in your own private randomly generated planet, build your own cities and towns and roads and houses and anything else you want to, battle against hoards of randomly generated monsters, craft armour and weapons and a ton of other stuff, hunt for dungeons and chests of gold, and then create your own story?
If they turned this into a fully realised MMO, it would be outstanding. Which apparently they are working on. But to say its pointless or boring is just betraying why sandbox MMO's are not as popular as some of us would like.

It's a sandbox. Not everyone likes sandboxes. I used to play it a lot before but felt the game was missing something, something I hope 1.8 will bring.
<childish, provocative and highly speculative banner about your favorite game goes here>
Looks awesome. The narrator on that video gave bad info several times but I'm glad to see a glimpse of 1.8.
If the graphics look dated on purpose, then I'll make sure to steer away from it on purpose too.
Waiting for Guild Wars 2, and maybe SWTOR until that time...
The retardness is strong with this one

This is exactly the update ive always wanted! The worlds really coming to life now, and without the need of a million mods to do it!
The excitements back
I haven't played Minecraft much for a while, these new changes look like they'll have me playing it again... the XP system is a much needed addition in my opinion.
Exactly. There are also NPC villages that will spawn randomly through out the world. This update is pretty sick imo.
Minus the NPC's due to the fact that Notch can only do one of these two things: A. Go on vacation. B. Work on a different project. Dont get me wrong, I love minecraft and I'm moderatly excited for 1.8. But their stupidly slow development cycle has really started to piss me off. Lately these updates have been 3x longer than the ones they did a year ago. I'm waiting till 1.9 when they add the rest of the adventure update stuff to go back and play.
Yeah ive always felt the game could be farther in developement if Notch wasnt the person running the show. I mean its a basic concept that many other games have just as good if not better.
I agree, the game really isnt the insanly complex thing that their cycle leads us to believe. Its just that he cant stick to one thing. Lately its just been his lead programmer doing all the work (Jeb) while he works on random other games (that is, games that are not Minecraft or Scrolls). Hes a good guy but he does not understand how to properly run a studio.
Im fine if he really wants to go do the other stuff but if he is going to do that then he should use some of the ~$267,000 made in the last 24 hours to actually hire more developers.
(http://www.minecraft.net/stats.jsp) (At time of writing 13350 have purchased minecraft in the last 24 hours).
Well that and the damn game is still in beta? I doubt this game will ever release lol... its already being ported to android and stuff with out the final client being done.
The problem with that way of thinking is that, for him to develop faster he would need a larger team. An increase in overhead would have to be regained in sales. We can all spin about how much he has made, but he is also reinvesting that money in other games (as all studios do). Most people that want minecraft have most likely paid already. That means that the vast majority of his new material will be made with no new income to back it up. If he intends to keep moving this forward he must always be thinking of how to draw more money in.
I think its cute how the poster below you suggests more programmers as though you can buy those at a dime a dozen at the local 7-11. Its not as simple as that. Each game has its own code structure. Any new additions must learn that structure before they can code a single drop of rain. It would speed things up EVENTUALLY...but until then, it would actually slow things down as everyone got brought up to speed on the engine and the development direction. Oh, and it would likely double the cost on our end, because programmers aren't cheap, (at least not at the caliber you would WANT for a game seeking any measure of success in a market filled with more expectations than common sense).
You can already get it on Android. Its only creative mode and it goes for the cool price of $8. They are also getting close to being done porting it to the 360.
So let me try to lay this out:
These are his current and currently pending revenue streams:
Minecraft (PC)
Minecraft (Android)
Minecraft (360)***
Minecraft apparal
Scrolls (PC)***
Blocks that matter
And any potential profit from Cobalt due to their association with it.
I wouldnt doubt I'm missing something either.
Can someone tell me what the point is in levelling? Do i have to be a certain level now to craft, say, iron items? or is it just going to be a number that goes up to show off to other players or what?
So far we dont know, but what I do know is this little tiny peice of script could be used for custom servers to have players do exactly what you mentioned. And there are servers that custom code this game to there fitting... such as any RP server out there.
Currently notch has as many coders as he does people running the company (that includes himself as a coder and not as a manager). Mojang makes easily over $300,000 a day due to sales. That is 3 times what you pay an expirenced programmer in an ENTIRE YEAR in the US. And remember, he makes this all in 1 single day. And as more content gets released more people buy the game because it becomes more and more feature complete.
Minecraft now has about 14,000 sales per day where as a few months ago it had around 10,000 a day (if my memory serves me). These two or three coders that he has now are also split to two different projects (minecraft and scrolls). So thats saying we have one coder for each game with notch doing both, but this would be wrong because notch doesnt really work on minecraft he works on side games that he also sells for money. If I remember correctly the game "Blocks that matter" didn't take much more than a few weeks.
In regards to hiring new developers slows things down: If you hire 2 or 3 developers at the same time and they are expirenced developers then it shouldnt take long to train them all at the same time, nor should it take them long to find themselves comfortable with the structure considering the game is coded in java. Then, with these extra programmers they can get minecraft and Scrolls to their release states faster. This will generate income from the people who dont buy betas as well as income from the sales of scrolls and the cards from its item shop (It will have an item shop, but everything can be acquired in game). Then they can use these programmers to work on another revenue generating project.
Really the benefits outweigh the costs. His overhead right now isnt high considering at the current rate of abotu $260,000 a day, Mojang studios makes almost $100,000,000 a year. And for a few $75,000 programmers to dent that kind of income would mean notch is buying a lot of really expensive hookers.
Yeah... hes way over his head. He needs to finish one before he starts another.
I have to agree if those statistics are true. I know for a fact its not hard to learn Java... my bud can probably program a game like Java about as fast or quicker than it took Minecraft version 1 to come out. And 75k a year for a programmer when he made how much last night? He should have atleast a team of 30 coders on each project like Naughty Dog did when they started out on Crash Bandacoot.
Well im a noobie to Minecraft... I just tied this video in with a first impressions video since people were wanting my opinions on the game haha... and I watched some 1.8 so I knew a tad about it.
Glad you enjoyed the glimpse of 1.8.
