Normally, I am all for freedom in gameplay, but this has two major strikes against it.

1: Most importantly, this has the potential to bog down the engine and make it less light than it could/should be.

2: People will undoubtedly end up abusing it if it does not fill up the screen by keeping it open during fights to keep tabs on what everyone should be doing. Yes, this is possible in other ways, but I would rather the game not facilitate it.

It's just, not a good idea. It's a bad idea. It is a waste of time and energy for the developers, and it can cause problems.

    No. Just, no.

    1. Everthing has the potential to do that. Historically, none of the in-game browsers have. In most MMOs, you'd add more overhead and a greater frame hit by adding a couple more UI elements than by adding a browser, as the browser's actions are often not run or managed by the normal client process. Actually, an external browser would probably cause a greater hit to performance than an internal one.

    2. This can easily be done with ANY communication tool, internal or external.

Your two 'major strikes' simply haven't proven to be an issue in any of the existing IGBs, and they have been around for years now. For more info, here's a devblog about EVE's IGB. That's just one way to go about designing them, btw.

There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein

little hint.. you dont need the game itself to run a browser ingame

    www.xfire.com

problem solved, any game not in windowd mode has a browser function at the press of a hotkey (in which you pick) no need for them to spend time codeing a browser into the game and neglect somethign else when if you REALY want one you can just install that program.

also on a second note.. I would MUCH rather them finish that fancy andrioid ap that you can use to talk to your guild and play with the aution house from your phone even if your not at your computer... instead of installing somethign that would require me to be at my computer. Also alt+tab is not that bad, even on slow computers.. if it takes you 10m to swich in and out.. you need a new computer bar none

Weel games like The Secret World will probably need a built ingame broswer function, since it requires you to go onto the internet to collect info for quest and missions. Unless you want to constantly switch to broswer all the time, no matter how fast it is, I still think some type of games will need a built in browser, not all, but some of them.

How much WoW could a WoWhater hate, if a WoWhater could hate WoW?
As much WoW as a WoWhater would, if a WoWhater could hate WoW.

If you ever played Anarchy Online by Funcom, that actually used an in game browsing type technology where you could click a link and it loaded up something else in the little window that had the links. It was mostly text and simple images at times, but it was still that sort of technology which was pretty neat.

It's cute how he thinks spyware isn't an integrated part of the internet as a whole, just try connecting to the internet on a cimputer with no protection whatsoever and windows XP installed.
