Really? From what I've seen the homophobia vs heterophobia seems to run about 50/50.
I'm sorry for those individuals that feel that the non-inclusion of same sex relationship story arcs ruins the game for them, I truly am. But if the self expression of your own personal sexuality in a video game is the most important facet of the game's entertainment value to you, maybe the problem lies less with Bioware and more between your own ears.

Oops. I should have included the words "some of the" in my post. Apologies. ; p.
See my first post. That's why there was such a hubabaloo. There are expectations that one has with a Bioware game, and a SGR arch is one of them.
I actually think it's sad people bring these social issues into the videogame realm, not to mention using such an important real social issue to further their hate campaign on a game, it's petty and disgusting behavior.
I actually think it's sad people bring these social issues into the videogame realm, not to mention using such a non-important real social issue to further their social agenda when there is no effect on their person in the real world, it's petty and disgusting behavior. See what I did there?
This is perhaps the stupidest topic of all time. If you want to do it ingame, there is nothing stopping you. To code something like this into a game to appease a few people is idiotic.
The arguement is pathetic in the proportions it has gotten to.
Gamers seem to be taking a turn for the worst in that they really think it is their place to dictate to games companies what they should or shouldn't do.
On the other hand if they don't implement ham sandwiches in the game I am going to create multiple 100 page forum threads because, well, I think they should have them and I'm important right?
In previous Bioware's games, SGR is hardly a problem because they're singleplayer games, no ones going to care. For me, SWTOR would be a very uncomfortable place seeing players run around with same sex companions.
The SGR issue is a rather pointless thing really, afterall, we're here to survive, to populate, is all I'm saying on this issue.
They have player housing its called your ship. As for space combat this is star wars even the movies are mostly planet based.
as for companion love its a choice a small one in a story based game. So its not like taken it out gives them time to make a full fledged sim flight gqame to go with ground combat.
The fact people actually though u would get a full sim based space combat game and ful combat on ground game from any mmo is sorta funny and really ridiculous.
That said i like how one of the mentions in disappointed with gamescon was player customization at start up and bioware hasnt even finished everythign with that.
So thats why they dont let u create a character from scratch. As they havent finished everything they are adding to let u customize your face, hair or anything above the neck yet.
What is worse? That they are intentionally being noninclusive (for political reasons), or that they are too cheap and lazy to add another 40 hours of design/development/QA to make their so-called community inclusive. There are no legitimate reasons for this unprofessional comportment...not in this day and age. They should all be embarrased.

I agree. Every movie, book, and video game that does not include same sex romance should be highly embarrased. Im sure Bioware has been embarrased since they made the first Kotor. Which didnt have it either. I mean....COME ON! Lucas is probably also shamed to have not included it in the movies too.
By God if we cant write a story and not include homosexuality in it we should just forget the whole idea altogether! If I see even one more nature show about dolphins on the Nature Channel that doesnt have a gay couple making out Im gonna sue.
I mean this game comes out based on Star Wars and I cant even watch two male Jedi make out? What is the world coming too! Heaven forbid.

Hey if it's cheap why don't you go make your own MMORPG and include it then and see how cheap it is to create one. Nothing is set in stone on what should be added or not. It's people's creative imagination that create these games so why should people on the outside have a right to try and change their idea?

How would YOU ever know what is going on in MY game between me and my companions? Stop trying to tell me how to play the game.
If part of your character story arc/development is an option for a romantic whatever, then same sex should be an option whether you choose to use it or not.
In all honesty look at the number of G.I.R.L. players we have? 50-80% ?? of females in game are guys - some acting in very non-guy fashion. What someone choses to play ingame is their personal choice, It's just silly this is such a controversy. If it had been included I doubt there'd be so much chatter.
Kids/teens don't have an difficulty a variety of relationship concepts, the it's wrong prejudice they learn that from their parents.
I am gay and I was not offended by the non-inclusion at all. I was merely disappointed, mostly because they brought my hopes up with that poll of theirs. It's no reason to lose our sanity over (to both sides of the fence, from what I've been seeing).
I didn't play Mass Effect 1 or 2, mostly because there was romance but no same sex romance options. I am somewhat ineterested in ME3 because of the rumor that you can have a same-sex option. I didn't play Dragon Age 1 because the only homosexual romance . . . was kind of stereotypical to me. I played Dragon Age 2 because it did have the relationships.
I think some of you missed the point completely. I can't speak for everyone, but I know that for myself, I just want to be able to play a game that is supposed to be fun and be able to safely be myself. Heaven knows, reality is short on things like that. It's a game, after all.
I am of the opinion to put it all in, or don't have it all.
I just want to be treated the same. Think about it like this. What if the only option in the game were same-sex relationships. And everyone told you to suck it up, and stop whining about something that isn't even there.
None of the other MMOs out there have any love interest arcs and no one even bats an eye.
Just sayin'.
However, I am offended by some of the comments here. Someone posted above about how uncomfortable it has become in a place where once was unity. Yea, that.
But as they say, if you have haters, you must be doin' something right.
I must admit, I rarely have ever regrettet so much to be part of a "community" as this time. I mean, I knew that MMO gamers are not really very open minded and liberal. But reading the replies about this particular topic, it really made my heart cold and uncaring about people here.
I am really a guy who usually shares how he feels and think. I tend always enjoy communicating and talking with people. Even those who disagree. But these days reading all the many acidic and mean comments, I feel like I don't want to connect to most people especially on this website anymore. It is not that people disagree, it is HOW they do it, how they word their disagreement. In a place with so much scorn, anger and disrespect, I guess I must question my connections. I don't mean anyone here unwell, but you guys did not credit yourself here in any positive manner, EVEN for a gaming community.
Maybe you meditate over the fact that respect and empathy are a two way ticket. Just an idea.

Amidst all the vitriol in the gaming community, it's easy to forget that most of these members here are usually ignorant 12-35 year old males who know very little about life, and witht he internet, they have the wonderful mask of annonymity so essentially they forget all their manners. So keep that in mind when other hobbyists (of a hobby that you love) come across as so hate-filled. Chances are, these guys are really ordinary IRL and they are just venting their frustrations in a misguided, ignorant and crass manner. Young white guys seem to have an axe to grind about everything in our society these days. In earlier times, before gaming was so big, these men could take their frustration out in sports and things; they can't do that now. The internet is a safe haven for this sort of thing.

No, that's not it. People are upset because all this is good old fashioned exclusionism at its finest. It's not even like the characters we will play are some predetermined characters (for example if we were playing Luke in a single player RPG). Then I can understand why Luke is -only- straight. It's in his character. But this? The character is ME for goodness' sake.
This is 2011; we've had the Stonewalls, and the protests. Chances are that many homosexuals are employed by BioWarEA. In spite of all that, they exclude us and thereby snub us.
What is baffling is that they have the same sex pairings in their RPGs... Where the main character is partly predetermined. It would make more sense if there were no same sex romances in those games! And yet they leave it out of the MMO version. That is just so inane on so many levels that I don't even know what to really say.
Ive played to a level 8 and ive already turned down 2 or 3 chances at a same sexx romance.
Great, I am not sure what this has to do with anything. Were you hoping to make a point with this statement?
To say bioware is bigot or something though is ridiculous they are usually a very open minded company so no idea why they dont have it.
So we can agree on something.
wouldnt play that way if they did but wouldnt care if they had it.
Fair enough. Again though, I don't see why you state things such as this. If you are not interested in a same sex romance, then it won't affect you in any way. As I said earlier: this is nothing but a very bold act of them excluding a type of player on certain grounds and they have no right to do this. I mean this stuff doesn't even happen in the real world!
It's not as if job descriptions in the real world say, "We all give our perks to straight people". If they did, they'd be in violation of basic human values.
I watched a few pax panels online and no one asked the million dollar question which was shocking. For such outrage on the forums about it why didnt one person ask hey bioware why isnt there any same sex romance in tor.
They had the oppurtunity at pax why not ask it.
Unless I am mistaken, it was a one-on-one interview.
If you're trying to subtly imply that this issue is nothing simply because "no one asked about it", then I'm sorry, but you're mistaken. Had this been before an audience, and were I there, I'd definitely ask about this in a Q&A.

I think that BioWare is idiotic to even put something like NPC romance in an MMO. But if you're going to do it, why leave out gay relationships? They exist, they ahve been here since the dawn of time.
Either have straight AND gay or none at all.
It's not like they have to hire real life actors to play a relationship, or make out or something. All they have to do is change some pronouns, and have the male NPC model be able to respond appropriately to another male PC model.
If they were really afraid of upsetting bigots then they could have simply made all same sex romances to be player initiated.
It's simply dumb and so very BioWarEA. Romances. ROFL.
"Never argue with a fool; onlookers may not be able to tell the difference."
remember the outrage BW had to endure from the news companies, when Mass Effect was first released? Now multiply that with the fact its on online game....yeah.....it would be a nightmare because we, in the Good Ole' USofA still cannot handle gay people.
I remember on the drive home once listening to Sean Hannity (he is a bit loopy so i listen for the giggles) went on about a 20 minute tirade about Mass Effect and morality.
I dont blame them for not allowing gay relationships in game. We arent mature enough to handle it as a society yet.
A person can be very smart and compassionate, but as a whole, people are idiots.
We arent mature enough to handle it as a society yet.
It is not about being mature as a society. Some can stomach it others cannot. There will always be those who agree with your preferences and those who do not as with everything else. In the end there should be no romance in a MMO outside otf the erp or whatever that folks decide to rp. Stupid idea by BW to include it.

Romances. ROFL.

I need to take this advice more.
remember the outrage BW had to endure from the news companies, when Mass Effect was first released? Now multiply that with the fact its on online game....yeah.....it would be a nightmare because we, in the Good Ole' USofA still cannot handle gay people.
I remember on the drive home once listening to Sean Hannity (he is a bit loopy so i listen for the giggles) went on about a 20 minute tirade about Mass Effect and morality.
I dont blame them for not allowing gay relationships in game. We arent mature enough to handle it as a society yet.
A person can be very smart and compassionate, but as a whole, people are idiots.
hence why i said as a whole.
