Just curious, I seen the major ideal, that WoW brought in most of the new age MMORPG community that we have today, but how much truth is there to that you think? Do you believe a large population of post WoW MMORPG players have never played WoW before?
For those that never played WoW before, but started playing mmo after WoW came out (2004), what MMORPG do you play/ have played?

The numbers actually support the perception that most MMO players got their first experience with WoW.
Pre-WoW, UO/EQ dominated but had less than 1M subs total.
Post WoW, well.. rest is history.

I been wondering. What is the actual number of WoW Subs from the USA alone, and from the west in general alone?

I just looked up this for another thread. The data I found is years old, but when WoW hit 10 million subscribers, it was 2 million in Europe, 2.5 million in North America and 5.5 million in Asia.

eve online was my frist mmo (going on 5 years now) and last year i tried a WOW trial..made it to like lvl 2 and uninstalled. Dont like that game.
what is this WoW u speak of??? is it a board game?
Well I started two years ago, but I've been playing single player/online lobby games, got into MMO through Runes of Magic, I was intrigried with the potential of what MMOG can deliever, but none has really succeed to my view yet. The only MMO that I ever actually paid for a sub is Rift only and currently. Looking forward to what GW2, TERA, TSW, B&S, ArcheAge and SWTOR has to offer in the next year or two.
As for WoW, I've heard of it before I actually started playing any MMOG, but was never interested in it, thus why I don't even like too much of the current batch of MMO out there. I've tried the f2p till lvl 20 thingo, got till level 8 and was bored already, so yeah, WoW is definitely not for me.
How much WoW could a WoWhater hate, if a WoWhater could hate WoW?
As much WoW as a WoWhater would, if a WoWhater could hate WoW.
first played UO back in late 1998 to 2000 before PSO for dreamcast. i LUV UO but with its outdated graphics, animation, spells, etc it just don't get the vibe from back then.
i really wish they release UO2 but looks like its going to be just a dream like many others
my first MMO was EvE , started playing from Feb 05 when I got faster connection than the dial-up . Kept playing EvE till LOTRO came out in 07 and was totaly owned by LOTRO so I quit EvE .
During that time I read and watched many WoW news and video's but never felt that WoW is my game type , always had the feeling that it is a bit cartoonish to my liking and I am not willing to pay to play such a game but in 2009 I started to get bored of LOTRO and decided to take WoW free trial just to see what is it about . I played the trial for like 3 days then I uninstalled the game and never looked at it again .
WoW isn't worth the monthly $ to play and should have gone f2p before long time . I heard from some of my friends who still play that the game is dying and servers become less and less populated , rumor's says blizzard is merging servers at some point soon .. who knows !
LOL. Actually...yes. It was Warhammer, they just changed the name and lore around.
I hear ya. I played UO a little, but mainly played EQ. But for me though...there is actually Everquest Next in the works that they say is "supposedly" going to be like the old. Not going to hold my breath...since SoE is at the helm again for it.
Started with Anarchy Online, went backwards to EQ and then UO (didn't like it), tried EQ2, LOTRO...every game i played i kept hearing about WOW..did some research and it looked average. But since it had Blizzard tag i bought it anyways and played it for first time in 2009 and had the most amazing experince in any MMORPG.
My first MMO was Star Wars Galaxies. My second was Everquest 2. My third was WoW. It is worth noting, however, that I didn't understand SWG and I sucked at EQ2. SWG is not a good MMO to start with... for a 14 year old.
I was playing around in runescape and Tibia before picking WoW up and getting hooked on MMOs for real. However after couple of years I got tired of it, and started a nostalgia trip back in time with EQ2, Vanguard, etc. Sadly I missed the golden age of MMOs
I played my first MMOs just before WoW and I've never played it. I think it was in beta when I picked up my first MMO. I started with Lineage 2 among a few. Never liked it. Never liked old-school MMOs. Didn't care for WoW after I had tried Guild Wars 1.

the interesting thing about this is from what I hear Blizzard was creating a gane based on Warhammer until Warhammer owner (mythic I guess?) pulled out which means that World of Warcraft could have very easily been World of Warhammer.
Yeah, the first warcraft was supposed to be set in warhammer world until games workshop (mythic had nothing to do with warhammer back then) got cold feet. Few name changes, and you get warcraft.
