Gear.

For some of us it's more than just numbers that make our spells pew pew harder. Some people like to flaunt their gear around in towns showing how awesome it looks, and they love to explain how hard it was to achieve. And no!, we arn't talking about gear that's been dyed in a creative way. We are talking about the gear that makes your character intimidating and or powerful look'in.

Personally I like my character to stand out from others who are on different content. Forgive me for using a memory from WoW, but does anyone remember the staff Bigben? Yeah, I'm talking about m******* f****** Big ben, the benediction staff. Now it wasn't the most creative staff by any means, but that staff definitely was saying in its own way, "Bi*** I've done that MC shit and healed those dieseased poor human ghost people, and I got what it takes to wipe on bwl content now!" Nothing else looked liked it, and it's something I've always kept in my characters bag over the pass 6 years.

What I don't get is why so many current mmos are getting so lazy with the gear. I don't want different shades of red for the same teir of gear! I want new orginal gear! My priest in cata went from having blue toilet bowls on his shoulders to red ones! My mage in Rift got 3 peices of gear from 3 different sources that are different difficulties AND THEY ALL LOOK THE SAME!! Sure I can dye them, but I have half the stats of some vet players and I look like them. Sure there are small differences, but it's not enough. I feel like my character should write his name on his crafted crappy dark shadow helm, so the r6 mages in the same warfront don't accidentally mix them up (Or should they =p).

So what do you guys think of the graphics of gear? Are they important? Should gear be as unique as much as it can? Are dyes just a lazy attempt to make gear vary more?

/End rant

For me it's more about appearance. Oh, i want gear that will make me competitive but I'm never willing to do nutty things for the best gear. I would never find myself raiding every chance I cold for some helmet.

    Life's too short for that.

Gear should be appearance only. There should be no stats.

If i do a dungeon i want to do it to get awesome looking gear, i don't realy care about "stats". The class i play should define what stats i have.

I would say I'm somewhat closer to your opinon than others. I do think gear should add "something". If I'm wearing leather armor I should have less protection than plate but I should also be able to move moree quickly.

Other than that, and the idea that "good armor/weapons" should be a little better than "bad armor/weapons" I don't think that there should be huge discrepancies in gear.

The character should bring the rest to the table.

Gear APPEARANCES?  Yes.  As a matter of fact, I'm a huge fan of appearance gear, but....that's not exactly what you said.  Stats gear and appearance gear are different, obviously.  I couldn't tell if you were asking about the appearance of stats gear....or just appearance gear. I think all games should have slots for appearance gear (or otherwise make the gear customizable) and it doesn't matter to me, in THAT case, what my functional "work gear" with stats LOOKS like.

Yes, I want to look different from everyone else.

Appearance=Heavily important. I spent hours over hours in the Chamions Online character creator.

Gear=Important if it changes the playstyle (like in EvE, where gear is actually gear, like equipment that does something particular, like webbing/scrambling/firing/salvaging)

Gear=Sucks if its just stacking stats everybody else is stacking and has no influence on how you play (e.g. sandbox-itemization. +12 int, +24 int, +50 int, stays int, you do more damage, that's it.)

Appearance is definitely very important.  As long as there is a wide variety I can find something that suites me but I really hate when every character class of the same level looks the same.  This really isn't a giant issue in Rift although a little more variety wouldn't hurt.

This is a good quesiton and one of personal preference. I am not into the fashion thing but found myself seeking a new look in APB. When I think about it, personal gear would be nice in any game where you can stand out and earn to show off. You bring up a good point.
