I guess my main point why its a make or break function in mmos for me is not only what I said about people that arnt into gaming that much that dont download 3rd party software but also, personally I dont want to have to organize people and tell them what my channel is on some software that has nothing to do with the game thats being played.  The whole point of VOIP is to emerse the players more into the game and get everyone cozy.  Using 3rd party sofware ruins that. Plahying mmos is all about meeting new people and playing with players youve never seen before.  You cant go about using voice chat with those people without making a whole issue about what and where the channel on teamspeak or vent is, with VOIP everyone is ready to get on with it which is the game itself.

There are so many good VoIP Apps out there, Teamspeak 3, Ventrillo, Skype etc etc.

Will voice communications be good for Combat, generally these help yes, but not mandatory, uless you are a perfectionist, and can't have fun any other way.

I disagree.  There is a privacy issue with VOIP as well as the inconvenience of setting it up.  Your IP is available to those hosting it.  This is true in Vent and in Mumble, too, as I recall.  No one I meet in an MMO needs my IP address, anymore than they need my home address.

While I'm not likely to ever use VOIP in GW2 anyway (oh the irony of looking forward to a game called Guild Wars because I'm hoping it's the one game that won't treat me like dog vomit because I won't join a guild!), I would be far more likely to use it now and then for things like PvP if it were integrated into the game.

Setting it up takes tops 5 minutes no different than installing any other APP and less frustrating than the Daily PDF Reader Update..lol...

I do understand your concern with the IP privacy issue, however, if someone really wants to know your Ip hey could do so even if VoIP is integrated with GW2. The reason is mainly due to the way that VoIP works, the stream of voice data gets setup through a server but once setup it is point to point, to explain it simply, so all one would need is to have a packet sniffer installeld and they can know your IP.

This maybe also, a reason why VoIP (on top of other reasons mentioned in this thread), not many MMO's actually implement it, there is always a potential security issue, which no company would like to be accountable for.

Some games such as EVE and even WoW have implemented VoiP, but I never personally liked using their integrated facilities I prefer using Voice Communications though our trusted Guild Server with the people I know.

In either case, if GW2 supports it, I will not be upset or anything, i just think that the cost time and effort to put that in place for good preformance and Quality of Service on a grand scale such as an MMORPG could be better used to insure Quality of the Product and Experience in another area.

As for being part of a guild, in PvP, yes it can help, but if you are a PvP addept, you do not need it in reality as you can anticipate and understand what the team you are fighting with is doing, with a bit of situational awareness. ;) It is like a sixth sense, and I am sure you may have experienced this if you PvP often in the games you play.

Lone Wolves, also have their role to play in any game.

    Cheers!

Builtin VOIP in mmos is imo unnecessary. With exception WoW (where noone used it) no mmo i played had it and still all guilds i was in had some VOIP  - no reason to reinvent wheel, when you have good free VOIP like Mumble.

Thanks for the info, I didn't realize that, even when integrated into an MMO, VOIP could compromise my privacy.  So that pretty much ensures I will never install it stand alone again or utilize it in a game.  People will just deal with me typing or not deal with me at all, I guess.  The only role I refuse to play as a lone wolf is the role of cannon fodder, hopefully that won't be an issue just because I won't use VOIP.

I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy, accompanied by an educational system which would be oriented toward social goals.
