S2 Games MOBA (multiplayer online battle arena) Heroes of Newerth has switched over to the free-to-play business model. New accounts are considered "Basic" accounts and are then upgraded to "Verified' accounts after a certain amount of playtime, or, if the user purchases any amount of Goblin Coins (the game's item shop currency).
Both Basic and Verified accounts will have access to a rotating roster of 15 heroes, with the ability to purchase heroes a la carte as they come out.
Players who purchased the game in the past will have their accounts upgraded to "Legacy" accounts, which grants lifetime free access to all Heroes of Newerth heroes.
Basic accounts will only be able to play in Basic rated matches, while Legacy and Verified accounts can play in "Verified Only" games in order to allow new players to get acclimated to the game.
For additional information on the switch, be sure to check out the official Heroes of Newerth Free-to-Play FAQ.

Glad to see how this will compare with League of Legends
HoN's tutorial is slightly more useful, however I've been having a lot of fun in LoL.
so...
If HoN was F2P since the start i feel it would have attracted the majority of the LoL players, but as it is it wasn't and i don't see many LoL players making to move to HoN.
Personally i love LoL, but currently waiting for Dota 2
LoL is much more fun to me. Looks like HoN is going to the same path as LoL. You know how they say WoW copy but i have to say LoL copy :P
F.B.I
HoN has been out far longer than LoL, so that makes your argue completely illogical. They both have their good points. All depends on your playstyle.
Unfortunately, with HoN there are some elitests crying on their forums about this.
Ozmodan, think about it carefully. You're wrong there. (I'll give you a hint: steveo5566 never mentioned which ones first, he only said HoN's going the same way as LoL; f2p. LoL has always been f2p, unlike HoN which costs $30 to play before).
On topic, DOTA 2 is coming, so I can see why S2 decided to switch their payment model.

Gee sorry to burst your bubble, but i have played it free for ages.
I don't know if they changed their business model because of the success of LoL or just because of the upcoming Dota 2, but anyways I think that was a good move from them.
This was definitely needed. LoL is owning HoN right now with their free-to-play model and HoN was still recovering from those attacks. Either way, DotA 2 is coming in for the cake.
Just a note:
Anyone who says that LoL is better than HoN, should really play HoN.
Why i say this?
I tested beta for half a year and the differences i find since then and now is impressive. They have even included embedded guides in the game, which is something so useful for new players to hold on to. Thats just ONE of the things HoN has that far exceeds LoL's dreams, and let me add: I play both games, and i've been playing LoL ever since HoN went retail, and all i have to say, or should i put, ask, is how in the world can a game with so much support, like LoL, not even have guilds incorporated in the game? More so, i believe people have been asking for avatar portraits in the forums, still nothing? I mean, seriously?
Not complaining, i just get a bit of nerd rage when someone comes to tell me LoL is better than HoN, in anything than popularity.
And to add, just a small curiosity: The other day i found my self looking upon the finals of HoN at Dreamhack 2011, given the community is so goddamn small compared to LoL, i saw more exciting from the crowd there, than in LoL's finals. But this is just add-up rubbish.
Just looking around... Hoping GW2's community won't suck
Heroes of Newerth and League of Legends is two different games.
You cant compare such. Its like comparing COD and BF.
