Right click on your blank desktop, choose the appearance tab, and in the color scheme drop down towards the bottom of the window, choose any of the three colors listed.
On a side note, some of you have TOO many damned icons on your desktop. I can't stand icons on the desktop, so I take all mine off. I literally have no icons showing. I'd show you, but I don't even have paint installed. I can't stand bloat on my computer.

You can use StyleXP to change a bunch of features on you desktop, but i dont personally use it so I wouldnt know all of its features.
