Haven't played since launch. Me and a friend bought the game then at $70 for the special edition and felt very dissapointed with our purchase. There were a few things that really drew me into the flow of the game but overall I felt I didn't get my money's worth. I felt a little less dissapointed since they atleast kept it free to play but it wasn't enough for me to stay and continue playing the game past level 15ish. I was hoping more drastic changes would would be rolling out sooner but it's almost been a year now and it seems with this new patch that Square is finally doing something to the game that will draw back some players. This includes myself so after the patch is done downloading, I will make a new character. I don't think I can get my friend back into the game so I would like to join some others. If there's any decent linkshells out there that are ready to recruit some of the returning players then please leave some comments below including server and website details. Would like to join a group right away. I am looking for one that really actively engages and enforces lots of group play. I am not interested in the ones that just seem to be spread apart solo'ing and just spending time in the linkshell chat.

When do you play?
If you are an FFXI veteran I'd recommend Selbina's community it is quite good and group friendly.

I only played FFXI till about lvl 20 if I remember correctly. I would play a bit throughout the day, mostly morning - afternoon and a little bit during some odd hours.
Lindblum or Besaid might be good too. Did you look at this thread?

Barely anyone reads this site from the community, I would direct your linkshell search to the Besaid server forums on the official site, or Eorzeapedia.com for better results.

I'm planning to go back to Besaid after 1.18 ships on my Roegadyn (sadly, rerolling another server/race is a problem because I'm not ready to give up on the FFXI shoes

The limit is that you can only apply it to one character per server I believe.
