Nah. The license can be rented out to anyone at anytime. Just look at all the different toys. That's at least 3 or more different companies who have bought the license rights for a few years. Legos, action figures, other video games etc.
My best guess is Bioware is waiting for Blizzcon to pass before announcing anything. Since they seem concerned with the competition and have stated that is the reason for holding off on giving us the release date too early, that's my best guess.
Makes sense in a way, better to find out Blizzard's end of year plans for WoW, SC2 and Diablo 3 and then plan from that.
I would have to look the quote back up, but I would think it was due to the financial arrangement with EA where LA gets a percentage of the profit from SWTOR, rather than a set amount. This would prompt them to reduce competition, even from another product they receive funding from. Of course SOE could have pulled the plug as well. Im sure someone can find a quote that details the reasoning more.
Cheers!

I think a November release more likely due to the peripherals set for release that month since those were supposed to be released at the same time as the TOR launch. If the game is ready before December I don't think EA or Bioware will want to wait for December just for SOE's license to be up.

I don't think it will be a November release because of all the games being released that month, even if they aren't MMOs. I expect EA will want to concentrate on the BF3 v MW3 advertising war that wil be happening and that's what most of the game sites and publications will focus on.
Given the budget of SWTOR and how long it's been in development it's only good business sense to release in a period where it doesn't go up against as many AAA blockbusters so it can receive maximum exposure and not be fighting against Skyrim and co for people's money that month.
Along this line of thought, is it possible for a September release to happen? What is the shortest time between a release date going to retailers and an actual launch of the product occurring? November seems practical if they release a date in August/September but would be cutting it close wouldn't it? Promo-wise and all.
I have a feeling from what I've been hearing that it could release as early as August. Just a hunch too, don't quote me on it. Just think though, release doesn't have to be told that much in advance. In fact, I would say the announcement date should be made less than 2 weeks before release.

most mmos seem to take 2 maybe 3 months but WoW announced on november 4, 2004 and released on november 23, 2004 so its possible in in as little as 3 weeks
It's pretty damn obvious SWG didn't have very many loyal followers even if they had 10,000 subs. After their announcment even the heavy servers turned into ghost towns over night. The game was kept around in it's shitty state, just as a filler, until something bigger and better came along, just accept it as that and move on.
There are many of us loyal followers of SWG about, hence all the hostile feelings, and posts of the 'vets' however, most of us won't play the version SOE has given us today. Instead we play on the version we can't talk about on these forums.
SOE and LA trying to revamp and change SWG is similar to the whole 'New Coke' phase that was tried to drasticly change the product and compete with it's rival WoW.. uh.. Pepsi -> Clicky <-
It also had the same results.
As to the cancelation of SWG, yes I believe LA is trying to put the failure of their decisions behind them, and ride the new cash cow to market. LA has proven if you change it it won't exsist. Or do you have a copy of Return of the Jedi with the original Anikin character, and not that actor from the prequel? Han shot first! etc.
SWTOR. Face it, in the Scooby Doo Mystery Solving Van of coolness, this game is Velma. In this current MMO climate it has about as much chance for survival as a group of inquisitive teenagers in a 1980s slasher flick. -Tardcore May, 2011

I would still like to see the proof that LA had anything to do with the "lousy" NGE or CU changes. To date I have seen a LOT of people blaming LA, yet nobody has shown me a bit of proof that the DEVELOPER didn't mess that game up worse than it was at launch. Can any diehard SWG fan, or anyone else for that matter, offer up a link that will finally prove that LA is behind this CONSPIRACY? On top of that, I read the article saying SOE was not going to renew it's franchise liscence for SWG. It seemed pretty clearly a decision of SOE, not LA, so a more in-depth article link would be appreciated there as well. Thanks.

Both SOE and LA are accountable for this. You really think SOE would do something like that without showing it to LA first and get a thumbs up?
It was however not LAs idea. One of the devs got the idea for a new auto target system, so they had a meeting (probably used drugs at it considering what they decided) and decided to revamp the entire game to get more players.
LA is not innocent, they could have stopped this easily, but hopefully did at least them learn something from the misstake, Smedley still seems to think it was the right thing to do.
Still, I really hope LA keep their greasy paws away from TOR and let Bioware do their stuff, I knew which company I liked most games from of those 2 and it sure insn't LA.
Its clear Lucas revoked licence to SWG in order to make SWTOR the only MMO choice for SW fans.
Because Bioware was afraid of the competition from SWG?
Because Lucas Arts wanted to "force" the last 5k SWG players to move to SWTOR?
What does Lucas Arts possibly gain from forcing SWG to close down? Why would Lucas Arts force a situation that will only result in negative press to hit right around the same time they are trying to make a successful launch?
I really do not see where Bioware or Lucas Arts really benefit from closing SWG down.

I agree that LA isn't innocent. They if they really wanted to could have stopped it. However unless we have some kind of transcript to know for certain theres no way of knowing if the way Smedly and co. presented it might have sounded good to LA at the time. After all spin doesn't just occur in marketing. it occurs in almost all areas, and when SoE was trying to pass this upgrade off i'm sure they made it sound better and more appealing then it really was.
However noting that LA after seeing what happen to the game probably should have stepped in for the sake of the IP but I think by this point it was already too late. Who knows, however, and this is just speculating, if Smed had ask LA if they could have rolled back i don't think LA would have had an issue with it. I just think they didn't care either way, both essentially had the star wars feel to it and didn't really break lore that i know of, except for the jedis and i still don't understand why LA didn't step in there and say no seeing as it was a pretty big thing to just basically throw the lore in the meat grinder and destroy it by essentially making luke who was suppose to be one of the last, basically one of thousands, that one of the last jedi was suppose to be a major plot point if i still remember the series correctly, thats what made luke so important in those movies, save for one other the jedis were all but dead, SoE who had it set in that timeline just basically nullified that point when they allowed people to becomes jedis.
With that in mind i'm more of the ideal that LA is a passive when it comes to these games and only agressive when it messes with the lore....on most cases. Who knows but i agree with you that between LA and BW having say in the game i'd prefer BW, and thats more so because of what LA and more importantly what GL has allowed to happen in that universe, frankly BW's version feels more like SW (to me) then GL's version does which is funny in and of itself.
As for the topic itself because i feel like i'm going off on a tangit here (which i could do a lot of for SWG), I really doubt if the release date would be around the same time as SWG closing that would from a marketing and consumer stand point seem too much like one dies and the other rises and may or may not work out well, it's risky at best. I think (and no i'm not in marketing) it would be far better to start a month or two before SWG ending so the game can establish itself in the MMO world for when SWG closes and people can seemlessly transfer over if they wish.
Help me Bioware, you're my only hope.
Is ToR going to be good? Dude it's Bioware making a freaking star wars game, all signs point to awesome. -G4tv MMo report.

LOL, nah I think LA has been unhappy about the income from SWG a long time and don't think it is worth the small income to renew the contract, or they demanded a too large sum for SOE.
Let's face it, SWG have been on life support for a long time, just like Vanguard. But unlike SWG do SOE own VGs IP. Lucas art probably had a percentage in their old contract and wanted a predetermined sum instead now.
Lucas art doesn't gain anything from closing SWG down but they hardly gain much to keep it running either.

If you want to go with that theory... you'd put the release date of TOR a month earlier.
That said... LA doesn't care about a Star Wars game competing against a Star Wars game.. they are getting a license fee either way.

Stephen Reid said that Swtor will be shown at game events pré and post launch.
There are no game events around December.
I think Bioware would wait the Blizzcon or release the game just closely before.

I believe the Licence fee is too much to justify renewal , as simple as that.
Different games broader player base not even something LA have to consider in this case.

Pesonally I think September
ROFL!
Competition? Did that game even have 10k subs? In order to be a competitive MMORPG you have to have a subscriber base bigger than a small town.
