TSW investigation mission hacking computer made networks in game.

With real hacking knowledge only hardcore hackers know of... what the hell?

"Some investigations are informational - you have to search for the right information which clues you into what to do next. Some of them are logical - figure out a sequence of numbers or a series of events. Some require very specialized knowledge - hack this computer using a series of commands only a hardcore hacker would know or translate a riddle from this language which is only spoken by 300 people on earth."

This is just to deep! Is the language Na'vi from Avatar movie?

It's just some PR hype, nothing special.

Some encounters require Computers/Cryptology/Linguistics Rank 3..

But others will require Computers/Cryptology/Linguistics Rank 5...

Plus, if the game actually required that detailed or minute of skillset, I doubt many people would ever encounter it.

I'm fairly certain a lot of the people who would genuinely fit the terms wouldn't be the same kind to sit and play MMO's longterm.

Some sure, but those same types of people are probably doing things that tier a bit higher in the intellectual/knowledge spectrum than playing an MMO.

So now you need an openly skilled white-hat hacker, playing as a hacker in an MMO, to fake-hack a simulated system.

And people already complain about needing a dedicated healer for instances...

Those comments were made when the designers talked about Investigation Missions. Those vary in difficulty and type, from puzzles to wiki surfing to solving riddles/mysteries to some thorough metagame sleuthing. The Investigation Missions are optional in the sense that you won't suddenly experience a blunt halt when you're unable to solve one. They're optional and an alternate way of progressing ingame.

And since this type of Mission is a continuation of the ARG's that have been around regarding TSW so far, I don't think it'll be strange that some of those Investigation Missions require specialised skills like moderate hacking skills or linguist knowledge. Some of those Missions are intended to be solved by joint efforts of a guild or even a whole faction on a server working together to break the code or break through to the next mystery.

Just look up ARG and 'The Secret World' (or look here) and you'll see how devilishly hard some of them could be.

The second one should be easy for any competent google monkey with too much time on her hands.

The first one?  Eh.  Not sure I want to be entering search phrases that will probably lead me to sites infested with malware, feds, and fed's malware.  (Suggestion for Funcom, set up a handful of web pages with the correct answers and google bomb them to #1.  You can always sell advertising space on it.)

And regardless of any possible (if unlikely) drawbacks to it, you are correct about that.  More games that require brains, please!  (Or at least strong OCD tendencies and the ability to use search terms well).

I do wonder how long it will be before some helpful soul puts all the answers to all the best puzzles up on a convenient website and ruins the fun of it, though.  Not sure how FC would stop that without putting a ridiculous amount of time into randomizing the tasks.

Things likte this can kill the game fast. In AoC many people didn't like the combat system, it was too hard to handle. Not saying it was the reason for the epic fail with AoC... but it sure made a lot of people leave it.

Now this sound like something people might not like...

Funcom, Funcom, Funcom, when will you learn?

The Investigation Missions are all sorts of puzzles and ARG's, and most importantly, they're optional, they're not mandatory to progress, just alternative (and optional) content. Those that don't like it can do the other content, for those that like it, it's an alternative means of gameplay fun.

As for the combat in AoC, I strongly disagree. There's also hordes of people who liked the combat in AoC, especially the melee combat, more so than they liked the combat in other MMO's.

You're right, it can. But then not all entertainment products need to be aimed at the lowest common denominator.

It's a good thing that they are seeking to provide some form of challenge in their games. As such if Funcom's 'issue' is making games with some complexity, then I hope they never 'learn'.

If people didn't take risks then we'd be getting the same game over and over again, which has kind of happened a lot has it not? I think it's great. Why shouldn't they try and add something different? Especially something like this which is interesting and has a lot of potential.

Plus what you said can be applied to ANYTHING, "They're adding mounts into the game." Damn, sounds like something people might not like. "No need for dedicated healorz." That sounds like something people might not like.

Pretty negative way of viewing things.

Well adding mounts is not something I think people will get angry about...... god.

I'm not going to say anything more about this, future will tell. image

GM's will be enforcing no spoilers within the game's chats. If someone makes a 3rd party website, that's fine as the player would have to seek it out to spoil the content.

I hope the answers aren't a simple google search, how pointless that would be.

Here's where I stand, atm a guild might re-run the same instance over and over for a month or more, each time trial and error'ing their way just a little bit further, where is the fun in that? Look at the amount of time spent on that and at the end what do they have? Bugger all.

Spending time learning about something that may not be just game based sounds like a better use of my time. Having very specialised in game characters forming a solid interdependancy matrix and planning can only help grow a world to live in, rather than a another carrot to bite off.

As to the comment above about the combat system being the death of AoC, nah.
