Why do most rpg's use the same characters?

Am I the only one that thinks that the rpg community is far too creative for me to play warrior or (assault) or soldier in any rpg i play? It's kind of rediculous that you see a "rogue" in every game that does the exact same thing as they do in every other game... I want something new, it could just be a mix of classes with a cool name or a completly new system and character that will drag you into the game more. If you can name one game that has all new characters or mostly new idea's for characters i will be dumbfounded.

Try any of the Elder Scrolls games.

Play any premade class you want, mix them up, create your own...or don't play a class at all.

    It's up to you.

I suppose it's a matter of creativity and game balance. If you use familiar archetypes for classes, you don't have to win anyone over with a new concept. Also, if you use the same old archetypes, you can use the same rock-paper-scissors balancing between different classes.

I for one don't remember a game outside the same archetype setting that doesn't have balancing issues.

There are 3 main roles in any RPG tank, dps, and support.

It is much easier to make a few similar characters with same skills than to be creative as many players already have a set type of characters they plan to play and regardless of how they make the game these 3 roles will always stay. Also for a few mmo to attract more players they need to show the players that their characters they pick will fit into the game. For instance there is a love of Rogues that have low hp and do tons of damage. Conversely in most games there is a lack of healing and support since most players play melee or ranged dps characters. They usually build a game that assumes most players will play as a dps first, then a tank, and finally support.

Which is why dpsers in games are the most common and least valuable in groups. Even if they change the names of the characters and classes they will still fit the same roles so it is easier to keep things as they are.
