Star Wars: The Old Republic: Powertech Multiplayer Preview

During a recent visit to EA's Redwood Shores studio for Star Wars: The Old Republic "Immersion Day", MMORPG.com Community Manager Mike Bitton had the opportunity to get a lot of hands on time with the game. In his continuing series of reports on the SWTOR Immersion Day, Mike takes a look at Dromund Kaas and talks about his party's adventures there. Check it out!

Our class stories continued in Kaas City, but in order to get there we had to assist some Imperial personnel with some fairly mundane tasks involving monsters and relays. This was standard fare stuf; go here, kill that, click on this, which was admittedly a bit disappointing, but this was also where we first got our taste of the vastness of the planet. BioWare’s Daniel Erickson wasn’t kidding when he told us that Dromund Kaas was about the size and scope of multiple Huttas and a quick glance at the map certainly confirmed the former; make no mistake about it, Dromund Kaas is huge.

Oh dear, losing your class quest is like losing the game in Swtor. V_V

Nice write up though. Good to hear about the game opening up towards more than just linear content after the starter worlds.

p.s. Do you have any overall feelings regarding Dromund Kaas? The music, atmosphere, lighting, surroundings, did they manage to push your immersion button?

  • Dormund Kaas sounds awesome.  did you put any points into the shield tree or have some kind of shield ability?  I ask because at pax, the trooper had a shield buff that last for like 30mins or so that also increased threat. i think they mentioned in the taral V walkthru video. ill check and see.  also do happen to remember what that elite boss was?  kinda curious what it looked like or what species it was.

oh and i almost wish they would leave that wookiee speaking huttese just to mess with people. ;)

edit: ah in the video they mention the trooper having a reactive shield that increases his threat so im wondering if maybe you had that.  although im guessing the safe bet is that it was your flamethrower abilities.  those seem like they would piss mobs off. ;)

Starter worlds?  You leave entire planets behind like zones as you outlevel them?

    When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.

  • there are indeed starter worlds on which certain classes start.  however bioware has stated there will plenty of reasons to go back to them.

    http://www.swtor.com/news/news-article/20101119-0

Q: Are the origin planets simply starting grounds, or will we come back to them past level 10?

A: You definitely have reasons to come back. Korriban, for instance, is where the Dark Council often meets. There are also reasons later for all of the classes to go to some of the other classes' origin worlds. It's important to us that lower level characters get to see some high level players strutting their stuff early on.

the 4 origin worlds and 2 capital planets will be faction specific though

edit:  there may be some places on planets that you out level but they have said they are spreading it out so you don't clear one planet and then never have to come back to it

Fantastic article.  It was definitely a good read.

One question,  when you were picking up the vinecat horns,  when the IA used BioAnalysis, did that give the entire group one extra horn or did he just get an extra in his inventory that he could trade out?

Also, did you try trading at all?  In other words, were there things that you found or that dropped early on that you could trade that other players wanted?

Only the person doing the Bioanalysis received the extras. As for trading, yes, we often shared stuff with each other that we found. The act of trading was simple and painless.

My worries exactly.  Welcome to the Star Wars themepark.  You'll start on a planet, hit max level, and be stuck on 1-3 planets for the rest of the time, never needing to return to the original and further diminishing the universe.

The more I read and see of this game, the more I'm convinced it's not the MMORPG I've been looking for.

Starter worlds is like starter zones in other MMO's. You're not barred from them, in fact there'll be quests and missions that'll need you to go back to the starter worlds on later levels as well.

The ACTUAL size of MMORPG worlds: a comparison list between MMO's

Fratman: "I'm saying Spring 2012 at the earliest [for TOR release]. Anyone still clinging to 2011 is deluding themself at this point."

The answer to that was posted right underneath the post he quoted.  Guess he can still be worried about it if he wants,  but it sounds like the developers took care of this pretty well.

Its been stated many times by bioware that u will have many reasons and oppurtunity to go back to the starter worlds as u level up. That way lowbies will see high level characters on starter worlds and wont feel alone many times.

"I certainly felt a good deal more durable compared to my experience on Hutta, but our Bounty Hunter healer didn’t feel too useful with his piddly Heal-Over-Time ability. We were told that while there are many different healer options in the game, most of them go about it in a different way. The Mercenary healer tree is primarily focused on mitigating groupmembers’ damage outright in order to reduce the amount of healing necessary."

This sounds a bit like GW's protection monk to me, where the emphasis is more on damage prevention and damage protection than damage recovery (healing). If that's the case, then that sounds great. Damage prevention/protection usually led to a more tactical kind of team combat than the whack-a-mole of pure healer classes and design.

Good article, your SWTOR preview series has actually re-ignited hope in me that this MMO will actually be good.
