    Interesting concept. Signed up.

Looking at the description, this seems to be quite a breath of fresh air in the MMO world.

Better to be crazy, provided you know what sane is...

Sounds like a game which requires a HUGE playerbase... And makes politics interesting.

I'm not in but by the screenshots at empireandstate.com does anyone else think it looks a lot like that Mafia game on myspace?

That is precisely what it is. At current there is really nothing that differenciates this game from countless Facebook titles. Click on a mission, spend energy, get XP. Do all the ones in a series to fight a boss, get an item. However, there are only like 4 items in the game at the moment so that was over fast. The only real difference is that you move around a map instead of clicking the link on your screen that says "Tokyo" to go to the next batch of missions. You can put down factories and harvesters to make things but that too was in Mafia Wars. The only difference was the property you bought in MW gave you cash which you then used to buy guns and armor. The armor in E&S is comprised of vehicles you 'wear' into battle that give you health and stats.

The only real difference is that this game gives you a graphical representation of what we used to do on Facebook. The hexmap does contain tiles you fight other players for but... you don't even fight the other players, you fight their NPCs so even the Facebook version let you fight the actual person. They have talked about the political aspects they are going to add to the game later but unfortunately they have been clear that they are 'leaving that up to the playerbase' meaning they are not actually putting anything in, they are simply counting on us to be the 'intruige'. As for the economy, well that is still left to be seen as it also, is not in the game. It is a very odd "open beta" considering almost nothing they used to sell this game is even in and they must be pretty close to launch if they are talking about not even wiping the playerbase before doing so. Very strange indeed.
