Nvidia Geforce GTX 5xx ???

rojoArcueidrojoArcueid Member EpicPosts: 10,722

hi. im about to get rid of my nvidia Geforce GT220 just now... and i want some ppl to give me a good advice here before making a new purchase....

what could be a better deal A or B?

A) this video card and for this price i can also afford a 2GB of Ram extra for my PC (currently 4GB ram).

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130625

B) or choose B only... without adding extra 2GB Ram (keeping my current 4GB) (due to price of video card)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130610

any suggestion on what could be better deal?... thanks

I would go for a 570 or higher but between the 2 I would chose B.

Sapphire has taken it upon themselves not to be environmental enemies, and rather than discard old Cypress cores, they are re-releaseing the Radeon HD5830 and HD5850 with the "Xtreme" suffix, with a new cooler and a heavy price cut. Reviews are already in

The HD5850 'Xtreme' has been reduced from an original price of 250GBP to 99GBP inc vat and the HD5830 'Xtreme' from GBP200 to GBP80 inc vat.

    http://www.kitguru.net/components/graphic-cards/zardon/sapphire-hd5830-hd5850-xtreme-edition-review-crossfirex/20/

5830 performance goes from between 5770 and 6790 to just above 6790 in some games. 5850 can be faster than the 460

    - Low Price

    - Low Noise

    - Good Cooler

So if you can live with a prev-gen card (it still has all the bells and whistles, DX11, Eyefinity, HD3D etc.) you can snatch up a great deal hear. You can get 2 of these cards for a merely 200 pounds! 2 of these baby's will perform near a 580GTX card =)

4GB ram is generally enough for gaming, so spend your budget on the best video card it will allow. I don't know how the rest of your system looks, but 2GB extra ram is unlikely to give you any extra performance in games.

Go with B, it has a 256 bit interface. memory runs a whole lot faster. B would be my choice for sure.

They're both way overpriced for what you get.  The GeForce GTX 550 Ti will give you basically the same performance as a Radeon HD 5770.  So why pay the extra $30?

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102873

The GeForce GTX 550 Ti doesn't have EVGA's lifetime warranty, either.

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150523

Compared to a GeForce GTX 560 Ti, a Radeon HD 6950 typically performs better, uses less power, has a better feature set, and costs less.  So why get the GTX 560 Ti again?

Actually, if you want a GeForce GTX 560 Ti, you can get one for $5 cheaper than the Radeon HD 6950 I linked above:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814162074

Galaxy isn't a bad board partner, but they're not as good as XFX or EVGA.

If you happen to prefer Nvidia to AMD and want a good deal on a gaming card, then try this:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121390

That's quite a bit faster than the GeForce GTX 550 Ti that you picked, and it's cheaper, too.  For that matter, if you're gaming at relatively low monitor resolutions (so that 768 MB of video memory will be plenty), it's probably a better deal than the Radeon HD 5770 that I linked above, too.

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130591

If you really do need 1 GB of video memory, then I'll link this GeForce GTX 460 Slow Edition, which isn't a bad deal, either.  I'd sooner get the 768 MB version, though.

    -----

Unless you've got an X58 platform, you shouldn't add another 2 GB of system memory.  Any other recent desktop processors have a two channel memory controller, so your amount of system memory should be a power of 2.  4 is a power of 2.  6 is not a power of 2.

Also, what power supply do you have, and what case?  If you got a GeForce GT 220, then you likely don't have the headroom to just go add whatever video card you want without frying anything.

  • rojoArcueidrojoArcueid Member EpicPosts: 10,722

my rig is ok i only need a new video card and a new PSU whenever i get the extra cash for it.... most important now is the video card....

my system is intel quad core i5 @ 2.67GHz, 64 bit windows 7, gt220 nvidia gefore with about 1gb, 4gb ram, 600 watt power supply

and a cooler master case taht has some kind of radiator cooling system and a fan for the video card  hehe

    edit: i play on a samsung HDtv on 1280 x 720

yeah i double checked and i got a 600W ATX PSU and the case has enough space for a bigger video card, i would say 8-10 inches fit well

plus theres enough space even for 2 video cards, i got a gygabyte GA p55m-ud2 mobo, dunno how good it is tho

  • QuizzicalQuizzical Member LegendaryPosts: 25,350

What 600 W power supply is it?  If it's a cheap junk power supply, then you should replace it at the same time as the video card, or sooner.  If a bad power supply kills your new video card, then you have to replace the video card a second time, in addition to the power supply.

This would work if you get a Radeon HD 5770:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371033

It probably isn't a good idea for some of the higher power cards, though.

This one would be plenty for any of the cards linked above:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817207012

Or, if you want the headroom to never have to worry about whether your power supply is adequate for any single GPU setup in the useful life of your machine, then you could try this if you do rebates:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817207007

    Or this if you don't:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371021

    -----

The real question for the case is how much airflow it has.  If you've got a couple of fans blowing air in, and a couple others blowing air out, all 120 mm or larger, then you're fine for basically any reasonable video card setup under $400.  If you've only got one case fan at all, then that greatly restricts what video card you could get without risking overheating.

    -----

1280x720 is a tiny resolution, and that will be awkward for a lot of things, from web browsing to gaming to Windows itself.  You might want to try getting a real computer monitor.

But if you're not willing to do that, then that's a small enough resolution that you don't need a ton of video memory, and the 768 MB card I linked above would be fine.

That doesn't answer the question.  What power supply do you have?  The nominal wattage tells you basically nothing.  For example, if you have this, then you should turn the computer off and not turn it back on until it has been replaced:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817822013

Or at the other extreme, if you had this, then you'd be set, and not only should not replace the power supply now, but should keep it for use in the next computer you get, too:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817194054

They're both nominally 600 W, but they're not at all similar.

i will get a good computer monitor when i have the money for it... right now my money is tight and i can afford as much as a video card under $350 and a PSU.. my PSU is kinda crappy its the same brand as my keyboard which is extreme gear with AC imput of 115/230V and frequency of 50-60hz.... and a current AC imput of 12.5A (RMS) for 115V and 8.5A for 230V

my case has a fan blowing air out  right from the video card location and it has a cooling system on the back that looks like a car radiator with tubes conected to the processor so i believe thats water cooling? not 100% sure

your PSU is just fine for what you want to do. its rated for crossfire, it will work for a single card.

what could be a good one for dual card? just curious because if i can get one of those now than its even better so i would later only upgrade the monitor

that 600 watt he linked earlier would do you. its a very nice PSU.

$26 for a "600 W" power supply, without rebates?  $26 for a decent 600 W power supply is the sort of thing that just doesn't happen.  Ever.  If you tried to actually pull 600 W from it under real world circumstances, you'd be lucky if the power supply was the only part that fried.

Even $25 after rebate for the 380 W power supply that I linked above is an unusually good deal.  So is $59 after rebate for the 650 W power supply that I linked above.

So basically, you need to replace the power supply when you replace the video card.  But power supplies are easy enough to replace.

The question about a case is about airflow.  It sounds like you've got a cheap liquid cooling system, which should work just fine to keep the processor cool.  The question is how to get the heat from other components, especially the video card, out of your case.  If you don't, then the air inside your case gets really hot, and then parts fry.

So look at your case and see how many fans are built into the case and blowing air either into or out of the case.  Internal fans such as the one on the video card don't count.  The fan on the power supply doesn't count, either.  Count up the fans, and their sizes (120 mm and 80 mm are the common sizes), and report them here.  Also, does the radiator fan blow air into or out of the case?

Also find out how many air vents there are where you count mount additional fans if so inclined.  From the other thread, it sounds like you have an iBuyPower computer, and they usually don't come with low airflow cases, so it's likely that, if you don't have many fans, there are at least vents where you could mount a couple more fans if so inclined.

just a rule of thumb, a high end video card will need an extra 175w-200w from the PSU through a 6pin or 8pin connector. some cards run 2 6pin or 1 8pin and 6pin to get the power it needs. in the diagram on your psu, it shows a total of 400 some watts for both your 12v rails. it technically should be able to handle newer cards in SLI/Xfire but depending on when you baught the PSU it might be getting a long in age.

Back in the day a PSU lost about 20-25 watts of power per year it aged, i do not know what it is now with all the new solid state caps being used.

No, it's not.  Where's the 80 PLUS certification?  How tight is the voltage regulation?  How much ripple?  It's exactly the sort of cheap junk power supply that is the reason for asking, and it needs to be replaced.

What good does a British site do for an American buyer?

Your motherboard doesn't have the PCI Express bandwidth for an SLI/CrossFire setup.  If you want the second card to run extra monitors that aren't doing anything graphically intensive, then it would work.

I'm talking about the 600w you linked earlier, think it was the corsair?

The Enermax one?  That was just the best 600 W power supply I could find.  I'm not recommending buying it, as it's expensive.  Most of the really good power supply lines don't have a 600 W model, for some reason.  Instead, they'll hit 550 W and 650 W, or maybe 500 W or 520 W or some such, but skip 600 W.  I'm not sure why.

  • DeathTouchDeathTouch Member UncommonPosts: 508

Any decent PSU over 600W will work for dual video card rig. beyond the "norm" is for those that are OC hungry.
