about trying AOC again

majimaji Member UncommonPosts: 2,091

So, since I'm currently not subbed to any MMORPG, I thought about which ones to try again. First I considered WoW, since I still have a bunch of chars around lvl 81, but not any higher, to have a look at the newer dungeons. Then I thought about AOC, since I never played it past lvl 25.

So, I went to the AOC website, and remembered that the expansion also adds new stuff for lower levels. So I went to that website, clicked on "expansion", and it gave me a list of features of the expansion, but not mentioning what it would cost. I spent some minutes on that website, searching for that information, and thought "hmm, normally companies try to sell their stuff. If they hide the cost that much, then that must be a bad sign". So I went into the account options, to see if maybe I can there add the new content (provided it's not too expensive). Didn't see the expansion there, but a huge list of stuff to buy in the cash shop.

Not beeing a big fan of cash shops, I was wondering if someone could tell me about it's impact on AOC. Is the whole game now aimed at cash shop users. Like, that those who don't use cash shop items will have a much harder time, or not get with others into any dungeons or whatever? Or can you simply ignore the cash shop?

I'd pay a bit of money to give the game another try, but I wouldn't want to buy the expansion and a monthly fee just to find out, that if I don't spend money on the cash shop daily, I won't be able to play the game.

Let's play Fallen Earth (blind, 300 episodes)

Let's play Guild Wars 2 (blind, 45 episodes)

I never use the cash shop. Don't even know what's in it. I get all my gear in game from quests, world drops,  dungeon drops, the auction house (aka Trader) or gifts and trades from peeps in my guild. But that is just me, maybe I am missing out, I dunno. My monthly $15.00 sub fee is all the money I'm putting towards this game. As far as I'm concerened that should cover everything.

You don't need anything from the item shop. Most of the stuff there is just for ease of leveling but you can level in AoC fast enough anyway. So really, don't fret about it.

Just gone to my account page and there's a "rise of the Godslayer" advertisment at top left, clicked it and it tells me that it'll cost £19.99.

Don't know about the cash shop side of things as i haven't been in game for a long time, been thinking of coming back for a bit but i'd want to try it for nothing (vet return weekend or something) before i spend any more money on it.

Hope this helps with the expansion pricing you were looking for.

Heh, I just searched my mail account for the mail about the expansion with the buy-now link. Worked too, but thanks. :) Now just got to decide whether to buy the Godslayer expansion and sub a month to AOC, or sub a month to WoW. Or do something else. But sooner or later I'll decide for something. :)

I resubbed two days ago to AoC, Best idea ever. It's a breath of fresh air from the EQ clones.

If you don't have the x-pack, on the upper left corner of the account page there is a huge " UPGRADE NOW" ad. If you click on it, two even bigger ads pop up center screen. One is the expansion, with a clearly labeled price of $24.99. Right below that is an option to upgrading that regular expansion to the Digital Collectors Edition for an additional $9.99. Pretty hard to miss,

That being said, I suggest buying the xpack elsewhere.

I also recently decided to give AoC a re-go and buy the xpack. I looked it up at Bestbuy.ca and they are selling Rise of The god slayer for $9.99/ Not only this, but it also included the original game, plus a virtual items starter pack.

So for a new player, they can jump in and play all of AoC for $9.99.

Moreover, you can create a new or update your current account with the CD key and still have the option to upgrade to the Digital Collectors Edition for$9.99.

In doing so you'll get a bunch more virtual loot.

The cash shop does not have things that impact end game asides from one thing. AA potions. These can have a huge impact on how fast you learn your AA which could greatly affect how you experience the game as it's a definite edge.

Most of the cash shop items are all just XP/PvP-XP/AA boosting potions, non-combat pets, teleports etc.

I've also been thinking about resubbing to AoC as I have missed the game but was so frustrated about the Khitai crashing and memory leaks.

How are those problems nowadays? Any of them been resolved?

The expansion areas are a little more demanding, but I think the engine upgrade has addressed any major issues like memory leaks and crashes. I can play Khitai with a 512 mb 4850. But I turn off shadows to keep my frame rates up. If you have 1gb vidcard you should be okay. No crashes to report; for a 4850 the game does pretty good. DX9, Win XP, shadows off I get in the mid 40s. If I turn on shadows the FPS cuts in half. That's with a i7 920 cpu and 6gb ram.

Thanks for the info :) I have a new PC since the last time I played which was a Dual Core 5600+ with a 8800gts 640mb gpu and 4gb RAM but was XP so didn't use all the RAM and I crashed a lot and it was quite frustrating.

Now i've got a AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition with a HD 5770 1gb gpu and 8gb RAM on Windows 7 so I hope I shall be ok. I'm going to try the free trial to see how it runs before I resub my account but i'm just waiting for the servers to come back online as it's patch day I believe.

Really looking forward to playing again. :D
