Somebody has the rights to it, but it was originally put on the back burner because they were going to push forward with the Buffy The Vampire Slayer MMO first. Last I heard they were both on indefinite hold.

Heck, even if they released a game that had horrible reviews, but had a cantina in a mudder town with a folk singer rockin out to "the hero of Cantan" I'd still buy it.

Ahh, Scifi (I bloody refuse to call it SyFy) channel original movies. CGI so bad it looks like a cutscene from an early 90's video game, and that's mildly insulting to most games from the era.
Aaaw, the SyFy Channel miniseries ain't half that bad.
The Lost Room, Triangle, Dune, Tin Man, Alice, pretty fun actually. They also made The Peacekeeper Wars and Battlestar Galactica as a pilot, which weren't bad at all.
The ease with which predictions are made on these forums: Fratman: "I'm saying Spring 2012 at the earliest [for TOR release]. Anyone still clinging to 2011 is deluding themself at this point."
Don't forget that the game portion is being developed by Trion, the company that made Rift. Love it or hate it, Rift has a lot of buzz right now and many people are quite impressed with the transparency and connectivity that Trion has with it's player base.
If this Defiance TV show is any good, I can see the game being great as well. It's a very ambitious concept, which could be great if pulled off right. As far as I know, no MMO has yet managed to progress itself along with an actively progressing IP such as a TV show. This was what the Stargate MMO was supposed to have done before the developers started making bad decisions.

It has been known for about a year that Trion Worlds has been developing an MMO based on a Syfy series set to debut this year. The science fiction network has finally named the game. Called "Defiance", elements from the series will be incorporated into the game and vice versa. Defiance is slated to be released later in 2011.
Syfy Ventures is launching a new publishing business of completely sponsorable genre games under the Syfy Games banner. Available initially on Facebook in the United States, the suite of high quality games will embrace the sci-fi, fantasy, paranormal, action/adventure, and superhero genres, ranging from original content to games based upon Syfy programming. These first round of games are scheduled for launch later this year. As well, Syfy is partnering with game developer Trion Worldwide for a new entertainment franchise, Defiance, that will seamlessly pair a primetime series with an online video game, scheduled for 2011.

I'm a science fiction fan but... I have to recognize science fiction fans in general have sucky taste and keep crappy shows alive... this is why most of the stuff on the "Syfy" channel stinks... like Eureka, Warhouse13 or almost all their TV movies...
This show is gonna be just as bad if not worst because now it will be further limited by the demands of the MMO-side of the project.
Plus Facebook? Really? Yuck! The last thing I want is my aunt, ex-girlfriend or grade school friend I have not talked to in 25 years checking up on my gaming habits... and we all know how well FB does in the privacy department....
Also... I can't stand how much the Trion guys are overstating what is in reality just cross promotion as "revolutionary". It's like marketing about marketing....

SciFi (sounds like "Wi-Fi") is what the channel used to be. SyFy (sounds and acts like "sissy) is what the channel has become. Wrestling, "reality" paranormal investigations, ruining decent SciFi shows by putting them at stupid times, and creating shows from dumb jokes (a vampire, a ghost, and a werewolf walk into a bar...ouch!) are just efforts to become mainstream in a similiar vein to how MTV so very rarely actually shows music videos.

Being Human was a BBC show first. You can see it on BBCA. Both versions are actually pretty good.

That announcement was very poorly done. Do they even proofread what they have written? Anyway, this could be very awesome. I'm not holding my breath, as MMOs in recent years have been downright terrible (not all, but a lot of them), but if they manage to pull this off, they'll be sitting pretty.

From what I UNDERSTAND, changing the name from SciFi to Syfy, allows them to air more shows and movies under their name. I guess the problem was 'SciFi' is a type of genre, thus couldn't be copyrighted. SyFy however is their own spelling of it, and CAN be copyrighted.
Anyways, I'm interested to see what Trion does with this. Rift wasn't quite what I was looking for, but it was a solid, polished product none the less.
I think it was so they could air non-scifi shows and get less grief from the consumers. Wrestling is not sci-fi. They also need to fire the guy either coming up with the original movies or the guy green lighting them. They used to be decent years ago, production quality not so much, but stories were much better. Now it's just crazy natural disaster or dinosaur/overgrown animal movies, yawn.
So, is this gonna be a retry of the ideas they had for SGW? They planned to have that game and the show cross over into each other. Maybe trion can pull it off.
Similar to Disney Channel, the original movies they use to have every month use to be good. But once Highschool Musical came out, the Original Movies have been clones of these Crappy Dance movies
If I had cable I would care. If I wasn't going to be playing GW2, I would care. If it wasn't going to be sub based (not that I have heard any info on the payment model) I would care. If I liked FPS games or gun games (I use to before games like CoD and MW)...essentially simulated war...I would care a little. If SyFy didn't suck, I REALLY would care. If Trion had a game I liked I would care.
I really think that the weakest link here is SyFy, and I really think the idea is good. I actually think Trion could suceed at their end of the bargain and still completely flop because of external factors.

i'll look into it when they come with soemthing that sounds cool. So far i didn't see anything. I played trions's rift and i didn't like it. it's not my thing... it's a high wow factor and i don't have anything with it. meh. most of the games are based on playing together in teams or raids or other time-specific crap. As i said... not my kind of thing.
