I bought the game the night of the quake... only played it for 20 minutes then went to bed because it was pretty late. I can tell you one thing I don't miss... setting up the account for this game...
I was ready to quit before I even got a chance to play.

You never used PlayOnline, did you?
Haha, oh God...such fail that was. But it did have some nice music :P
But sadly, FFXIV just wasn't up to it's predecessor's standards.
which is why Squenix is working like crazy to rectify the problems.. while i hated FFXIV at launch.. i'll wait and see what improvements are made and whether its enough to make the game better than XI or not.. at the moment.. im a bit doubtful but who knows. maybe Squenix can work some magic on it and pull the hat out of the rabbit...

I share the sentiment. I'm possibly even more jaded than you are as my skepticism runs deep but there is a little spark of optimism left for the game. If they can truly manage to recapture the GOOD aspects of FFXI, that at the very least would make it semi-worthwhile.
I'm not sure why they focused so much on making nearly identical races with slightly different names from FFXI but scrapped every thing that made the game so enjoyable.
Once I worked out that I should avoid every quest and instead wander round the world collecting items to craft, I quite enjoyed an hour or two of peaceful farming and fishing now and again.

I miss the idea of playing a Final Fantasy MMO.
