TERA: The first Korean MMO to not fail

LienhartLienhart Member UncommonPosts: 662

http://steparu.com/reviews/mmo-rpg-reviews/594-tera-online-review?start=1

I really do not know whether or not this was paid advertisement but from what I have seen so far these are reasons why I love what I hear.

#1. It has Korean art. North American art is bad, period. With the exception of Blood Elves from World of Warcraft, every other American MMO is ugly. Maybe Witch Elves from Warhammer are okay, but why do

            a. Humans all look like they are on roids?

            b. Female characters look flat?

            c. Bikini plate non existant?

TERA brings all of that, just like every other Korean MMO.

#2. Western quest mechanics. Alright, as you all know, Aion was an utter failure (well, at least in most of our eyes). Gold was constantly needed and the grind became stupid. What this guy has stated is that you never run out of quests. Grinding and questing are no different, but most of us prefer questing. He also mentioned that gold was not a problem for purchasing skills based on your level! THAT IS AMAZING! We have that in Western games, but it was never in Eastern games and the reason why they failed so hard here.

#3. Skill > Button mashing. I am completely sick of World of Warcraft and it's clones involving tab 2348612398123 tab 23876123129 tab 123786123912. What I'd love to see more is SRK+HP FADC -> Ultra. Executing that basic cancel using Ryu requires that you time and/or counter your opponents attack: watch the videos. This game WILL require skill.

#4. It is casual. I cannot believe that it was possible to make a MMORPG skill based and casual. Why? For years we have seen a flock of idiots scream skill == hardcore == no life, and it was almost true up until now.

I am fucking psyched for this game. Thank god it comes out after I am done this semester, hopefully it does not clash into my fall semester because I actually need to finish my thesis -_-

    By the way, read this:

A hardcore player will probably be maxed level within a week or two

WHAT?! KOREAN AND NO GRIND?! WTF?!

    AHHHHHHH!!!!!!

I love how people can see the future into how games will do..  I bet in the year 2035, "this game" will out do WoW finally!  Games in 2026 will be sooo awesome!!  Remember that failed TERA game from 10 years ago?  I hope these games don't end up like it!

BLAH BLAH BLAH.. That's why when a game comes out, and it fails, I laugh at all you future knowing people!

AGREED!!!!  Archeage is the game I want to play.  I could give a flying rat's arse about Tera to be honest.  It looks like Aion but with manual combat.  Woopdie doo.  Anyway, on a serious note.  I have no issues with eastern/western art styles.  I appreciate them for what they are.  So, OP, your #1 is subjective to your tastes not ours.

Archeage though, that game looks like it has the maturity and depth that I want in my mmorpgs.  Can't wait for that one.

    1. Technically Aion is not considered a failure, though its numbers in the west dont come close to their millions of subs in the east.

    2. Western art is bad? I disagree utterly. Generally, the problem I have with asian art design is that its childish, often silly and contains certain elements that keep it alienating the wesetern player. Small furry animal people for the cute factor mixed with hardened mature looking people, honestly just dont mix. Females that look like they go to a hair salon 24/4 and have these over done hair styles also is too much. Asian styles go into the extremes and often combine the polar opposites. From the western point of view, this destroys the consistent visual imagery and immersion. Remember, Western players approach rpgs differently than their asian counterparts. The west puts a big focus on immersion and role play. Remember, the west's foundations in game play and expectations do stem from the Dungeons and Dragons Pen and Paper experience, followed by Ultima Online and Everquest.  These are the roots from which western play style originates.

In terms of quality of meshes and scope... Recent Korean games have actually been licensing better game engines and actual next gen graphisc while the wesetern developers are trying to cut costs and use older tech, aka Rift. This IS a problem and much cudos to the east for staying next gen while the west is still past gen, so far.

    3. Questing is about quality not necessarily quantity, because with quantity and no quality, you just have grind. This goes for both western and eastern games. The west has a much better track record for scripted events and quests, as they are part of the game play. From the eastern perspective, quests are merely tools for character progression via money and grind.

    4. Economies are important. Any game that foregoes any kind of economy really ends up hurting itself. Tera is no exception.

    5. I played Tera at E3 and while it looks like a fun hack and slash styled action rpg, with great graphics due to unreal technology, inconsistency of world characters and pvp setup seem like they just are missing the mark for the western market. Though thats not to say its exactly a bad thing, but rather its combination of east and a bit of west, which chances are high it can alienate both markets and lose out big.

Tera looks like a fun distraction, but not a mmorpg worth investing too much time in.

Graphically TERA is beautifal, that I can't deny, but wether or not the artistic direction a game takes is good or not is entirely subjective (and it was rather stupid to compare TERA to WoW since WoW's art design was purposeful and its graphics are several years old).

"Crystals play an important role in Tera Online; equipping the right crystals can you help you overcome a lot of things such as leveling faster and winning a fight against other players easily."

Looks like gear for the win to me, not skill.  Gear = grind.  The OP reads completely wrong to me, but have fun with the chesty females in bikinis.  Am I getting trolled?  Lol.

Tera is the L3 project. They better get it right this time. L2 failed at release because it took over a month to get to level 20, when the max was 75. At 20 you could barely afford the first D grade (20-40) item after selling everything you had that was no-grade. These things have been fixed in L2 now, with shadow/common items, Vitality (1.5-3x xp), and reduced xp needed for levels. They are even reducing exp needed again in 1 week. L2 is great now, and if TERA is anything like L2 is now it will have an AMAZING launch. L2 has some of the best PvP I've ever seen, it just takes like 2 years of grinding to experience any of it.

So where's the proof that these guys are white and not asian?

and btw, WoW could be transformed into an asian art like thing ie. Runes of Magic.

most of them definitely don't look asian. The two artists I linked are from Hawai'i and Romania. I don't think most people consider Hawai'i part of Asia and Romania is in Europe.

    Exactly.

So far most white artists do this:

    "FLAT WOMEN"

    "STERIOD MEN"

    "GG"

I prefer asian artists for a reason.

And i have a feeling GW and GW2's art was mostly done by asians, why?

The first mmorpg where Skill actually matters, the PVP will be amazing.

Sorry no lifers, you wont be able to hide the lack of skill with gear in this game.

You could have the best gear in game, but if you can't aim, block or dodge...

Or Lineage II, it was only the most heavily populated MMO on the planet before WoW dethroned it. It held the second spot for at least the next three years after WoW launched. There actually been more successful Korean MMOs than Western MMOs if you include all of the F2P games they create.

This is actually why I never PvP in MMOs unless I have at least a 5 man in house, because MMO PvP currently is time >>>>>> skill.

    Street Fighter IV

    SC2

etc. etc. all have skill <<<<< time

You could sit around practicing FADC all day or BOs in SC2 and still get your ass kicked because yuo never bothered to learn how to counter or what counters what or the frames.

No way in hell Lineage 2 was more populated than FFXI.

Lineage 2 was a mess less than 1 month in the game with botters, gold sellers, etc. etc.

NCSoft never bothered to do shit about them either.

I prove to you that the art for gw2 isn't done by asians and you go off and say that it was? I don't understand your logic. Whether or not you think the art direction that ArenaNet has taken with gw2 is nice or not is subjective, but there are plenty of people who prefer it over TERA's design.

Glyphs are like talents, everyone gets the same amount of them. Also the same goes with crystals you can buy them from the general store. The buffs you get from the crystals are minor and i don't think they play such a major factor in pvp, since most of them are chance on hit or extra crit chance when you attack from behind and so on.

I guess you should go play wow or rift where you just stand still and smash your buttons.More skillbased huh?

I don't really gauge 2.5 million subcribers at launch a failure by any means. It was the most heavily populated MMO around at the time... I know I was there through Beta and continued to play for the next 3 years. Sure it was a very hardcore game and definitely wasn't for everyone but it was far from a failure.

Don't take my word for it, go to any mmo population charting website and check it out for yourself. L2 had twice the subscribers FFXI had at the time.
