THANK YOU! That fact alone gave them 3M subs from NA and Europe. Then add that to the 6+ million chinese players that got the whole game for free from a chinese marketing group called "the 9" and the fact they pay 6 cents an hour to play, and you get 10M subs.

Think the OPs  got his facts totally wrong thinking WoW is the only game to offer a free trial but I do take his point and I do think its VERY important for an mmo to offer some sort of free trial within quite a short period of time after release .My major concern with RIFT at the moment is that after the beta performance I experianced on a dual processor is that the game wont be worth me playing even on low settings . (lots of my friends had the same problem although on this site quite a few people say it worked fine for them on similar processors) . As it stands I wont be playing RIFT based on the beta performance but I'm also well aware it is a beta and a release maybe different . So even a 48 hour free trial would be a must for me before I spend 35 pounds on it .  The thing is with RIFT I dont think they have anything to hide . Even though I could'nt run it well I could see it was a pretty good game .But the impression given if they don't offer one to many potential subscribers will be that they do .

I urge anyone thats got a quad core to get it though . I've seen it played on one and it looks amazing .

Except that it took them a year or so (think it was a couple actually) to get to 3 million players, and that fact that they're last report stated there were about 5 million players in NA and Eu with 12.5 million worldwide.

And that many other games are played on the world market too.  Hmm

I would venture to say most people in the last couple years have that have played WoW have done so because of Advertisign and Word of Mouth and many have stayed because they actually like it.

    This thread makes no sense.

Yes wow had the the community before the game.

Would wow still be at the top if they released a shitty game and kept it that way?  Never.

I hate to break it to you, its not the battle.net community, its not the trial or pay modle, its the game itself that gets you 10mil subscribers.

You really think all those battle.net players would ahve stuck with wow if it was so terrible?  They already belonged to battle.net and had a wide array of solid games to choose from mind you.  If wow was such a terrible game, as most on this site agree on, that community would have left wow and gone back to starcraft ect in a heartbeat.  And if graphics and "game maturity" really matterd so much, wow would be empty.

Once again, its the game, wow is the reason it has 10mil subscribers or whatever.  Sure as hell doesnt mean everyone in the world likes it, but a lot of people do.

    That is all..

Companies either give me a free trial, or wait to get my money until I read a lot of positive comments about their game (comments made by real people and not just by game reviewers!) to convince me.  I don't think I'm the only one who hates to waste money on a crap game, either.

Considering the supposedly small number of people who take the time to say something positive about a product or service vs the much larger number of people who take the time to say something negative about it, unless a game is such a pile of steaming dog poo that no one could possibly try it and like it, not offering a free trial is a bad move.

A Tale in the Desert: 24 hour demo.

Asheron's Call: 14 day free trial

City of Heroes: 14 day trial.

Dark age of Camelot: 14 day trial.

    Darkfall: 14 day trial.

    Eve Online: 14 day trial.

    Everquest: Escape to Norrath demo.

Fallen Earth: 30 day free trial.

    I could keep going...

Actually, you can read the whole list here: http://mmofallout.com/where-to-buy-beta/

AoC and War did not have free trials prior to being F2P.  They had buddy keys.

DAOC, AC, EQ, and COX (COX barely) are all from the prior generation when millions of subs was a figment of our imagination.  Eve... how many worldwide subs?  I hear it's a lot.  Fallen Earth and Darkfall:  Tried to get free trials of both, and could not see them anywhere.  Please link.  Tale in the Desert is obviously not a full featured MMO, and I can't really give it full credit on the list.

Basically, every example named puts us back at square 1. Can we get some more pls?

How has the OP been on this website since at least 2006 and this is a argument? I call shenanigans... or epic fail.

I guess it is always possible the op hasn't played any game but WoW but I find that unlikely.

Warhammer Online had a 10-day trial prior to moving to the unlimited demo, in fact the Google check still shows "Warhammer online 10 day trial" on the new trial page. Age of Conan had a 7 day free trial before making Tortage free to play.

Also, the trials you're looking for are on the page I linked you to, which also includes information as to most other paid MMOs with trials, if you'd bother to read what was written rather than repeat points that have already been refuted.

WoW didn't have a free trial until almost 2 years after release.

Although, there were 2 free buddy keys with every box purchased, starting on release day.

OP and a few others whining about why mmo do not have a free trial right off it is pretty self explanatory. For one thing all the freebies would BOMB there servers and ruin the experience for ppl who have paid already most mmo releases are a mess and strain on servers to begin with they sure do not wanna  make it worse by adding  tons more of free ppl not to mention the cost of hosting those servers while they get pounded by ppl just wanting to try the game out when it releases. That is why they wait a few months it is to have a good gauge on server population and have the game stable.

    Yep.

Most MMOs don't have a trial outside of buddy keys until the initial hype goes down. It's a big driver of box sales and digital distribution sales from early adopters.

I remember those buddy keys WoW had... I do think it was at first only one key, then they expanded it to two keys when the popularity shot thru the roof. I bought, or prebooked the game first, got one buddy key, then a mate got that account because I didn't think the game was for me. Then I bought it again and got two buddykeys. I am not sure, but I think that is how it went down.

But basicly all p2p mmorpgs/fps got an trial. I have only come across one that doesn't have a free trial as of yet, and that is Aion. Invite only for now, and one of the strangest yet imho, 4 days trial, and the trial ends when you hit level 7 or 8 on a char, which had made sence when it took forever to gain a level, now you can do level 7 within 1-2 hours of gameplay, maybe less. And then we have perpetuum where you have to buy a 4 day trial for like 5 dollars or something.

Does the OP not know how to use the internetz? There's actually very few games that DOESN'T have free trials, Tabula Rasa was one of them (didn't even have buddy invite).
