This is an OT tangent, but I think it is funny that people assume everyone knows what WAR and WoW are like in order to make those comparisons over and over. Ok, I might give you WoW, even though what I know about WoW would fit into a thimble, but WAR?
Whether or not Rift has potential depends on what you're looking for. If you're just looking for another MMO that's solid and set in a place you haven't been before, a place to start over fresh or a place to jump in at the start of the game, then this might be it.
If you're looking for something that's completely different from anything you've ever seen or played before, then maybe not.
Rift is what it is. A linear themepark that promotes group play in it's game world through rifts. If you want a open ended type game you could look toward sandbox mmorpgs. I'm a big fan of games like Ryzom, EvE and soon EarthRise releases so you might get that open world that you want.

He's kinda out of luck. I know I'll be getting my open-world sandbox style fix when Elder Scrolls V hits in November. I think the genre just needs more time and a few more failures before it churns out a couple open world games.
As others have said, the major thing Rift has going for it is that it appears to be "ready" to ship, a month and a half before launch date. It's solid, it plays as described, everything "works" out of the box. What is there is in a high state of polish. It's strongest point is it tries very hard to take many of the great ideas that have been brought to MMO's since the advent of WoW and work them into a unified whole and it diverges from a traditional class system without becoming a %100 skill based system either.
The diverging opinions on this thread are a result of the fact that it is "nothing new" in terms of MMO gameplay, just a bunch of ideas we've seen before in different products, put in one. The class system is somewhat unique and for PvE there will be tons of different and varied class options. In PvP, as with every "skill/talent" based game, there will be builds players prefer over others and there will be "Flavor of the Month" builds that adapt to the ever swinging nerf bat. No different than any other MMO PvP. Good thing the PvP is not really "core" to the game, but an option to enjoy if that sort of thing is your cup of tea.
It's biggest offereing to PvE fans is the pseudo-dynamic world. It's not as great as Mr. Hartsman from Trion likes to hype it up to be, however it is pretty novel. No place is truly safe, not even quest hubs and the danger harkens back to the days of EQ1 where roaming high level mobs would just anhilate you out of nowhere. On the upside, the death penalty is nowhere near as bad as EQ1's, arguably even more lenient than WoW's. So dying to these roaming packs of dangerous mobs should not induce as much rage as I see here on the forums. Those that whine about the invasion mobs, the difficulty in killing some of the rifts etc, have been spoiled by spoon-fed PvE worlds that always ensure the player can win without any challenge. Rift is not quite so kind and does assume the community will have to fight together at times to overcome certain odds which means this may not be the %100 solo friendly game. You can still solo, but at times you will need to work with other solo'ers to clear a quest hub etc.
Beyond that, this is not some radical new MMO with a never-before-seen play experience. It is, however, one of the first MMO's in the past 5 years aside from say, Lotro, to launch with any kind of polish and readiness. That alone is worth my interest as I already enjoy MMO gameplay immensly and quality modern release doesn't hurt.

Personally, I wont pay for a 20-year old game for nostalgia. Considering Rift just as a Linear Themepark is false; it's dishonest.
On a very basic level, It's (Rift) open-world reminds me of vanilla WoW from 6-years ago, with hordes of players teaming across open-world map sectors collaberatively; but with Rift, there is considerably more content, and dynamic content at that with Invasions and opposing faction, particularly on a PvP server.
I'm not a fan of thousands of quests; that usually relates to grind, and that’s typically your game-play in conventional mmorpgs. But I don’t think of Rfit as a conventional mmorpg, but an amalgamation with greater public dynamic community content to depart to.
Therefore, I really don’t get the sense at all that “Linear” questing is what Rift is delivering a focus on.
I did get the sense that Trion is introducing a departure from ‘linear’ 'solo-centric' generic and static quests, which are the mainstay of conventional mmo’s, that are not massively-multiplayer synergistic, which are community fracturing and which we've been beaten down to accept as mind-numbing game-play.
Yes Rift offers classic fantasy mmo game-play, but a nice amalgamation of games that came before it, with more polish, completeness, dynamic content, and depth.
For example, for character development and experience gain, the devs are balancing the XP so you “don’t” have to rely on their quests for character development and experience, but can gain as much by “Rift-hunting”, battling “Invasions” and doing “Warfronts”.
Although there are story-archs and status-quo game-play conventional questing elements, its' interrupted and interlaced with server-focused, on-going dynamic and public events that take a community or team of players to participate in, during real-time, to prevent; kind of ushering in a broader-scope of massively-multiplayer public content and open-world dynamic game-play.
So I guess from my vantage-point, it’s pretty apparent that Trion is developing a mmo that is a departure from the “Linear” that most are accustom to, while adding massively public content, open-world dynamic and community-centric collaborative game-play and content to break-up and lessen that tedium of the conventional questing grind; to even forgo "conventional questing" much of the time.
Nice to be able to play the game your way without having to trudge through all the quests as a means for experience gain. Though there will be certain quests you’ll want to do to gain additional souls, etc.

The only connection to WAR would be the slight artistic similarities, the Rifts and the chaos that permeates some areas due to them being under attack.
The story line is very intresting, the graphics are far superior than WAR, and the quests, albeit your standard types, tie into the story very well.
This worries me; any mention of quests tied to "storyline" worries me. Does the game feel as free as vanilla WOW, where you could go to different quest hubs in a zone in any order, or does it feel railroaded like Cataclysm?
Asking a question you already know the answer to? We all know rifts level progression is extremely linear. How else are they going to keep everyone together to take advantage of the rift/invasion system?
I've not been in Beta, so I cannot really know what Rift is like. Yes, I have heard the word "linear" tied to Rift, but still not sure how linear it is.
But, if you say it is, I'll take your word for it. Too bad they cannot present it as a free open world with random rifts. Not sure why today's devs feel they have to force players to follow a "story". This "story" stuff in MMO's is getting very, very old.

I definitely was disappointed that they forced you to do all quests to continue to get some (at least up to level 20).
Now that they revamped the way you acquire souls, you can skip quest hubs. I think some (Story) quests still chain, but a large percent of the kill x, collect x, etc. don't require prereqs.
I think Hartsman said in a recent interview that the quests are there for those that choose to play that way, or people have the option of doing Rifts/Crafting/PvP. In my estimation quests are still probably the easiest and most efficient way to acquire gear.

Since it's beta and we haven't seen too much of the Warfronts, I'm really not sure about PvP. If people play The Black Garden in a straight forward manner it's really fun. If they hide on the defiant rock or behind the guardian tree, it's quite tedious. The little open world that I experienced was very zergy.
Drop the next-gen marketing and people will argue if the game itself has merit.

Welcome to mmorpg.com forums luong and congrats on your first post. I have to disagree in that Rift is no warhammer clone. It's clearly it's own game and is about as optimized and bug free as you will ever see a game prior to release.

I am not a fan of doing thousands of quests to advance. But I enjoyed sticking to the "Story" quests in Rift.
I didn't notice missing anything other than knowing that I enjoyed the story quests, and the quests I'll do for additional Soles, but it appeared that more quests "were" made available at further hubs, even if I didnt do some at previous hubs. lol

so ive recently been looking at this game and am wondering to myself does it have potential compared to all other releases so far and i would like to get some input on the game if anyone has any pleases feal free to post your oppinions.
one of my main questions is how does its PvP look????
Well it depends what do you mean by potential
If you mean longevity, in my opinion it has none.
If you mean a game you can highly enjoy for a couple of months then it has it.
PvP doesn't look too exciting IMO, PvE it's his stronger point.
