How long has EVE Online been around?

I was looking at the review and the screenshots...and they look amazing! I just want to know how long EVE Online has been around before I commit myself to this game.

EVE celebrated its second birthday since release last Friday.
It has been in deveopment since 1997 however
It came out around the same time that star wars galaxies came out. (Just an FYI.)
